With the success of Kickstarter projects bringing back more "old school" RPGs, like Wasteland 2, Shadowrun, The Banner Saga and the upcoming Baldur's Gate Enhanced Editions, would it be possible to do a Dragon Age game in that style? Namely, a lower budget DA game with minimal voice acting, isometric view, party of 6, lots of text and so forth? DA just seems well suited to that, especially as a means to more easily convey meaningful and significant consequences to player choices.

1. What feature from DA2 do you guys MOST want to get rid of?

The re-used environments? Specifically levels that were used several times to represent different in-world locations. I wouldn't really call that a feature, mind you, but it's nice to have it acknowledged that it's not a viable option.

2. What feature from DA2 are you DEFINITELY keeping?

The voiced protaganist.

3. What features, if any, from DA2 do you think is a cool idea but needs better implementation?

Most of them. Iteration is key. I'd say combat is probably the one that Mike is focusing on the hardest.

4. Is the friendship/rivalry system going to get redone or remain pretty much the same?

There's a thread on this particular forum where I've discussed my thoughts on that. I'd say it needs some refinement, but overall I liked what we did with it in DA2.

With all due respect to my contemporaries, allow me to say, "Woot!" I understand it is a serious point of contention with some here (Glitter, Brock, etc) however I honestly think, in just my humble opinion, that the voiced protaganist influenced by Mass Effect's character approach as well as the dialogue wheel was easily the best improvement to Dragon Age over all.

I still love Baldur's, Planescape, Neverwinter and other iconic RPGs of the 90s that used the classic text, but it, honestly, made Origins feel so dated, and not in a good way regardless of the "Sprititual Successor" moniker. Having the protaganist speak provides a fantastic flow to dialogue. Really, as others have said, the only place I agree where it needs to be changed is bringing in a VO who has a racially neautral voice, greater grasp of emotional range and inflection; also finding a way to better indicate *exactly* what's about to be said.

Otherwise, it fills me with joy to know the voice PC is not going anywhere. As long as that's untouched, and we still get all the classic staples of a BioWare game (please refrain from taking any *more* inspiration from ME at this point...) i.e. great story, characters, friendship and romance (please don't do another Aveline, i.e. here's this absolutely *amazing* companion that you *can't* romance regardless of your/thier orientation...) and so forth all of this new info leaves me really excited for the future of Dragon Age. Also, *Please* take your time with the production. I'd rather wait then get tons of "missing" content that will just be "added" later.

Will the Grey Wardens have a prominent role in DA3's story? They were so important in Origins, Awakening, and the second book that I had a sense the Dragon Age story would revolve around them. Now, it seems like we are straying away from them; moving Dragon Age into a different direction and following the mage vs templar war. I'm just curious if we will see more of the Wardens and darkspawn.

Funny you should mention that. The Grey Wardens were up to something in DA2... you will get to find out exactly what.

YESSSSSS! I was wondering what they were doing, especially when you run into them at the climax of Act 2. I figured it must be more involved than simply checking out the primeval thaig. Their involvement in Legacy was pretty exciting, especially how certain dialogue options after the boss fight reveal that the Chantry might actually be pretty right about the origins of the darkspawn. Whoo!

Thank you for answering all these questions!

David,

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer our questions. We appreciate it a great deal. :D

Questions

1. Is it possible that Morrigan's child may be a playable character? Perhaps even the main character?

2. Will we have more options for love interests? For example, at least one for each of the good, neutral, and "evil" player characters?

3. Can we expect to have more interactions with our companions, and more character development?

4. My girlfriend would be upset with me if I didn't ask this one. Can we get more feminine looking outfits for female player characters?

5. Can we expect a more manageable and user-friendly codex this time around? One that won't mark everything else as read while we're searching for that one new entry...

6. Will we see something like the Reputation System from ME3 appearing in the next DA title?

7. Have you considered ocean exploration for the next DA title? Perhaps one that allows the player to have a ship?

Feedback

I'm in agreement with you that player character racial options would be a great thing to have again. I had two fully completed characters in DA:O at 66 hours a piece (not including the standalone DLC), and that was due to the various racial options we had to choose from. I also sank at least 10 hours into several other characters using different racial choices (and one of those was probably more like 30 hours). If it makes a return, I would love to see more personalized content and dialogue for each race. The replayability would be incredible if that were the case. I'm probably just dreaming, but it's a nice thought.

I wonder if you're interested in having book characters appear in the next DA game? I know I felt very happy to see certain characters from the ME books in ME3, really helps the feeling that it's all one big world imho. Most of the Asunder cast was absolutely excellent for instance <3 (and I can admit my "one big world" argument is at least in part just me putting nice words to "please please please let me meet them again!" ;))

1. How its gonna be the map design?Hand crafted dungeons or just corridors with wave of mobs?
2.Plan to switch the art style again?
3.Origins will be back?
4.Will reuse the Darkspawn threat or you guys plan to make the game feel like a new adventurer epic novel?
5.No plans to appeal X crowd right?

Just popping into this thread to say a great big thank you to Mr. Gaider for answering so many fan questions (not to mention, giving so many answers that sound REALLY promising to me ;)). Really pleased in particular to hear about the possible return of Justice/Vengeance, Anora (what can I say, she's the solo queen in my canon run), and a refinement to the excellent friendship/rivalry system. Also throwing my support to the possible inclusion of an Asunder character or two - I honestly can't get over how exciting it would be to meet Cole in-game, since he's so unique among the DA cast.

How likely is it that we'll see a return of characters that are DLC-specific? By that I mean that both Shale and Sebastian seem to have story arcs that aren't finished yet, and I'd love to see where the future takes them - Shale in particular!

1. Is there going to be a blight?

2. Will you be able to summon demons if you're a blood mage?

3. And will being a blood mage affect the story or at least dialogue?

instead of maybe having a multi player option maybe have an extra game mode unlocked after the game is done? It might make more space in the game and cut down some time. Actually what i had in mind was either your in a fort getting hordes of darkspawn come at you and you go until you die. Another could be arena mode like origins where there were some arena fights. With this you dnt have to rush your dlc nor feel like any is needed to make players happy. They can test weapons after the game is done which is the best part.

Will LIs be different in terms of their sexual preferences as in ME series and DA:O, or will most (I guess all if you don't count the DLC Prince) be BI-sexual by default as in DA2?

Not sure. I'm fine with both approaches, myself. So long as everyone had an equal number of options, I'd have no qualms against using the system in ME3-- so long as we had the resources to do so.

Forgot to ask this question at Pax (and if I missed it earlier in the thread, sorry)...but is there a chance that whatever iconic character gets picked for marketing is female (or a female option?) I loved having femshep marketing items and picture on my CE game case. Hope that can happen for Dragon Age.

There's a chance, sure, but it's not really a decision I have any visibility on. So there's nothing I can even speculate regarding what our approach will be, sorry.

When my Warden died killing the Archdemon and was imported into Witch Hunt and walked into the mirror with Morrigan, will the flag be forgotten looking forward to her plot continuation or will it just assume the Orlesian somehow went to hang out? :P

It'll be interesting to watch if the Kickstarter projects actually translate into finished projects. Either way, crowd-sourcing isn't really an option for a corporation/publisher-- that's a little unrealistic. If it's an option for smaller companies to get the funding they need to make smaller games, then that's fantastic. I coughed up a pretty penny to support the Shadowrun Kickstarter, myself. :)

1. Is it possible that Morrigan's child may be a playable character? Perhaps even the main character?

Depends on the timeline-- as of the end of DA2, Morrigan's child would be, what? 8 years old? He also might not exist. That are pretty dicey qualifications for a main character.

2. Will we have more options for love interests? For example, at least one for each of the good, neutral, and "evil" player characters?

We don't split up romance options by neutrality. I'm not even sure that would work. At best we try to cover at least a couple of very different romantic archetypes so there's some basic difference in the kind of story they present.

3. Can we expect to have more interactions with our companions, and more character development?

There was plenty of these things in DA2. Even so, the nature of your interactions with followers is likely to change-- there's another thread where I've discussed a little bit of it, though the plans are not yet set in stone.

4. My girlfriend would be upset with me if I didn't ask this one. Can we get more feminine looking outfits for female player characters?

That's not really my field. It'd be nice, depending on the context of the outfit-- though "more feminine" could mean many things to different people.

5. Can we expect a more manageable and user-friendly codex this time around? One that won't mark everything else as read while we're searching for that one new entry...

I know there's been some discussion on the codex GUI. So maybe?

6. Will we see something like the Reputation System from ME3 appearing in the next DA title?

No, probably not.

7. Have you considered ocean exploration for the next DA title? Perhaps one that allows the player to have a ship?

Ships and water adventures would be great for a story that centered on it.

I apologize if it's already been asked, but is there any interest or discussion internally about a focus on gameplay and quests that are open ended enough so as to cater for different approaches, multiple solutions to problems and self contained choice/consequences as a result ala Fallout 1/2, PS:T, etc?

Just a note to those coming into the thread now: this thread was intended for people to suggest questions at PAX. It's not *really* intended to be an "answer any questions posted" thread. Seeing as we didn't get around to these questions at the panel, I thought I'd answer some... which I've done, as best as I was able, so at this point I'll stop.

I think that's something we'd definitely like to do, yeah. Some quests, by their nature, will only have a single approach - but others should have variations depending on how you're building your character and what choices you're making in skills, followers, etc. As to the second part - we'd like to do more in terms of self-contained consequences - stuff that makes an obvious and noticeable difference in your story versus the story of your friends.
