Very fitting that this PAX East occurs on Good Friday, the anniversary of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. I imagine that if BioWare doesn't make a definitive statement they will be figuratively crucified by the fans.

A crude metaphor but a fitting one. Let's hope it doesn't happen.

Excellent post, and this is exactly what I am preparing for. I don't expect them to change the ending, and as much as I like the IT, I don't think it's likely. My contingency plan is pretty simple. Close my wallet, and walk away sadly, shaking my head.

Mr Gamble already posted in a previous thread that I created. You don't send producers to do a PR statement. I feel bad for him.

Wow after reading through some of these comments, I'd like to dedicate a fitting song to you, the brokenhearted:

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad that it was over
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Wait 'till Friday before adopting this as your theme song. Bioware hasn't dumped us all yet! Hope and a fighting chance :)

In case you guys don't know, this is a song originally by Gotye, but Walk Off the Earth's version is excellent as well (and fun to watch).

Edit: formatting disaster fixed

I really hope they don't. The ensuing flood will wash away their fanbase forever.

I wouldn't take the word of EA rep even if they were in the US. Seriously, nothing has been said one way or another. Pax is the point where they have to give a straight answer. They don't, I walk. Decide to keep the endings, I walk. Pretty simple. They have one opportunity to win me back and that's Pax.

What can be done?

I'm at a loss for words here as I don't believe that anything Bioware does at this point will salvage their reputation from this fiasco. Far, far too many people have been hurt? The best case scenario is that Bioware openly admits an unintentional mistake and as a result I'm fairly certain a great number of us would rally behind them in an attempt to fix this. As crass as that is to say I believe at this point it's the only way we can prevent all hell from breaking loose.

Great read, thanks Taboo. I have two questions, though:

Did Ray apologize in a way to the fans who were hurt and who are expressing their displeasure? I think he said something along the lines of "we honestly didn't think people would react like this" or "we made a mistake in calculating how you would react to the endings" (I'm totally paraphrasing). It's not quite an apology...but sort of?

Also I think a big thing that we, as consumers/gamers/community members are having trouble wrapping ourselves around is what, specifically, will satisfy our expectations and what specifically will enable us to get behind BioWare and support their efforts. That could be why they're remaining quiet.

For example: if their plan is to simply provide greater in-game closure in the form of, perhaps, extended dialog with starchild, longer post-gameplay movies, and further evidence of Shepard dying or getting incenerated or turning into a reaper, is that enough to "fix" it? Personally I think this is what BioWare is doing and while it may please a portion of the 60,000 voices...not all of them. **

I personally would like the above PLUS additional, alternate endings. This is also a possibility though I doubt this is what we'll get. Even then some will still be upset because they want the current endings completely retconned--gone, made a joke, a dream, a parody, finito, over (whether it be indoc theory or otherwise).

** So if at PAX they say they're going to do what I labeled above. Is that it? Is that acceptable? I personally don't know. So in regards to contingency I wonder: how are we going to respond to that and will they continue to listen and modify?

If I'm totally misreading your post I apologize.

5 pages of people reaffirming that they are going to nerd rage more on the forums if they don't get what they want....... was this thread really necessary?

Dr. Muzyka did not really apologize, he made a rather neutral comment about what was going on. I really didn't interpret it as anything more than PR.

I believe that Bioware could create two endings that would satisfy a grea majority of people . This would placate a majority of the fanbase and resolve much, simply because they are so damn simple.

1. A good "bittersweet' ending. Shepard survives and retires with the LI while reflecting on what he has lost. Plain, simple and satifying for a great majority of people.

2. Shepard fails. I don't need to go into detail here.

These simple alterations would not give sixteen endings but would certainly be enough to placate quite a lot of people, at least enough to make the stress even off to where it's bearable.

Lastly, people aren't going to settle for a text epilouge. You can't end a series in Lynchian excess and expect people to take text or footage afterword at face value. It doesn't work that way in films and it won't work in games.

Your posts on this have been really great, Taboo. The "news" today was disheartening, but surely Bioware understands your most salient point - if they don't address this to the satisfaction of the hardcore fans who feel lied to and betrayed by this nihilistic orgy of an ending, then they'll lose a significant part of their fan base and tarnish their prestige forever.

Even from a purely business perspective - let alone a community/gamer's perspective - that would be incredibly foolish. I've been a big Bioware fan since Baldur's Gate and NWN back in the day, and it's sad to think they could lose me. They still have a chance to make all this right, so let's hope they take it. Sticking to their guns here is nigh on suicidal for them - hopefully they realize that.

I've been a fan since Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights as well! I trust Bioware implicitly for most things, but they will have to work hard to earn back some of it.

New section has also been added. Please reflect upon it should you choose to do so.
