What can be done?
I'm at a loss for words here as I don't believe that anything Bioware does at this point will salvage their reputation from this fiasco. Far, far too many people have been hurt? The best case scenario is that Bioware openly admits an unintentional mistake and as a result I'm fairly certain a great number of us would rally behind them in an attempt to fix this. As crass as that is to say I believe at this point it's the only way we can prevent all hell from breaking loose.
Great read, thanks Taboo. I have two questions, though:
Did Ray apologize in a way to the fans who were hurt and who are expressing their displeasure? I think he said something along the lines of "we honestly didn't think people would react like this" or "we made a mistake in calculating how you would react to the endings" (I'm totally paraphrasing). It's not quite an apology...but sort of?
Also I think a big thing that we, as consumers/gamers/community members are having trouble wrapping ourselves around is what, specifically, will satisfy our expectations and what specifically will enable us to get behind BioWare and support their efforts. That could be why they're remaining quiet.
For example: if their plan is to simply provide greater in-game closure in the form of, perhaps, extended dialog with starchild, longer post-gameplay movies, and further evidence of Shepard dying or getting incenerated or turning into a reaper, is that enough to "fix" it? Personally I think this is what BioWare is doing and while it may please a portion of the 60,000 voices...not all of them. **
I personally would like the above PLUS additional, alternate endings. This is also a possibility though I doubt this is what we'll get. Even then some will still be upset because they want the current endings completely retconned--gone, made a joke, a dream, a parody, finito, over (whether it be indoc theory or otherwise).
** So if at PAX they say they're going to do what I labeled above. Is that it? Is that acceptable? I personally don't know. So in regards to contingency I wonder: how are we going to respond to that and will they continue to listen and modify?
If I'm totally misreading your post I apologize.
