Without that, I seem to have way more difficulty being able to charge into the fray. Took me a couple different ries with bonus powers before I figured out what worked for me: just leaving it on, shatter it in emergencies and use Reave on AoE.
Good times now. Still, I wish they hadn't removed the auto-break.
Removing the auto-shatter from Sentinels really ruined it for me.

Give Cryo Blast a chance, with the right evolutions (Radius -> Cryo Explosion -> Frozen Vulnerability) you can get chain explosions in CQC situations using a shotgun and heavy melee and the radius is huge to make sure nearby foes will be caught in the blast.
