Not only did mass effect 3 ruin my opinion of bioware, but my opinion of
gaming. as someone in his thirties i have been playing games since
before nes. the trend is what bothered me. a simple bad ending is
nothing. ea has monetized a game to the point it makes me want to walk
away from gaming.
it started with xbox allowing people to
exchange content or sell it via the new xbox 360. only to see that upon
release all content was only to be sold thru xbox so they could get
their cut first.
then games went from releasing polished retail
games to games that were full of bugs. sure games were more complex
but testing departments shrunk and the customer became the bug testers
since they could later be patched.
dlc went from hey lets add a
little more for re-playability and make a couple more bucks to help
with the next title. to a later point where it became lets remove
content from the game and sell it later the customer will never know.
now mass effect doesnt conclude the game hoping to that this ending
would spur gamers to pay for the proper ending (speculating that last
one but everything looks like it to me at this point).
then the
biggest offense is one that started with smartphone games and mmo's.
microtransactions. now in mass effect you can pay to have all the stuff
in it. not just that but the Pokemon card system of how things are
unlocked makes it so random that someone could spend hundreds of dollars
and still not unlock everything. this makes multiplayer no better than
real gambling using real money with the hopes of unlocking your
favorite weapon.
gaming after a serious surgery reemerged as a
nice hobby to pass time, but because of the greed of companies like
bioware (under ea control) i can no longer continue to support these
practices. im not buying swtor now nor am i buying dragon age 3. i am
not alone and im sure that if these things continue ea and like minded
companies will usher in the next video game collapse just like atari did
when they failed to keep an eye on quality control just to make more
money.
now with all the drm and lost sales gaming companies make me put in a code to prove i bought my game new and if my wife wants to play the same game i have to pay an extra 10 bucks for the privilege. now xbox and ps3 leak rumors of not allowing used games. i traded games with friends all the time and if i liked it i would buy it. now i wont even be able to rent a game to try it before investing a minimum of 60 bucks.
this is a warning to the gaming industry I feel this way because i
feel that the industry sees me only as a dollar sign, not someone who
enjoys their "art". that takes all the fun out of gaming to me.
also for those who will say im entitled, well i spent my money which adds up among others to support a multi billion dollar industry. you bet im entitled to a functional product.
mass effect 3 was the straw on the camels back.
