Totally different approach to the endings for mass effect.
It's REALLY dark
Going with the dark energy idea, what if an ancient civilization realized eventually the universe would run out of energy and collapse inwards on itself before expanding again. So they create an ark capable of surviving the big crunch with the ability to build new arcs.
Just one ark is constructed before the universe implodes.
It houses the genetic legacy of it's entire race and the consciousness of all of them living together within it in a sort of matrix. People live, age, die, have children.Seeing life appear again after millions of years, the machine gathers all of the sentient life it can, to create another ark to save these people from the invevitable implosion and so on and so on.
Every 50 thousand years they come back to save what they can in the guise of destroyers, guaranteeing the best and strongest survive.
So the paragon renegade choice would be "destroy billions and trillions of peoples souls and consciousness" or "allow the human race to be reaperized, and the ending would take place inside the pseudo matrix, where you see all of the people in a perfect utopian world"
Either way, the last thing before the credits is the universe imploding, and triggering another big bang
