Troubleshooting Mass Effect 3 multiplayer connection issues (For PC!)

DO NOT open ports in your router without EXACTLY KNOWING WHAT YOU ARE DOING! Please read through the manuals to double check or ask your ISP For help. I do NOT take any responcibility of any problems of occurance, doing anything mentioned in this guide or comments are on your own risk.

This guide is to help people with connection issues, any improvement suggestions / grammar corrections are welcome.

Please don't bother to post messages like "I have problem" if you haven't checked that you've done the following or done the following. You also don't have to rage at me, BioWare or EA. I simply made this to offer a breif guide to troubleshoot the basics and I'll add more information when I have time to obtain it or make it (such as images).

Log on to you router to check settings is it on NAT, UPNP or Bridge

# If your router is on Bridge -mode portforwarding is useless (Skip to firewall)
("Bridges" traffic and assigns a individual IP for each device)
# If you are using UPNP portforwarding shound't be requried (Skip to firewall)
(Automatic network discovery, usually a last resort.)
# If you are using NAT portforwarding is required to host games. If more than one in your LAN is playing ME3, they will NOT be able to play online. Please switch to UPNP- or Bridge -mode or consult your ISP for additional assistance.
(Network Address Traslation, is a protocol which allows multiple devices share the same IP. Most common as most ISP's only provide one IP)

Router and IP IP configuration for NAT users!
(UPNP & Bridge users will not benefit from this, skip to firewall)

# Router options vary depending on manifacturer, read instructions or google them. Worst case try asking for help from your ISP if you get stuck here.

# Obtain your default gateway & dns servers and write them down from
       (Windows Key + R)  then type "c:>ipconfig /all >ipconfig.txt"
        - This will create a textfile at the root folder of your C drive.

1.    Open the following ports:
        UDP            5659
        UDP            6000

2.    Reserve a IP address for your computer (IPv4)

3.    Portforward the following ports to the reserved IP-address
        UDP            5659
        UDP            6000

4.    Configure your computqers network adapter to use the spefic address you have just reserved for your                    computer.

       # If you will be unable to connect, simply re-roll back setting undoing the 3 image steps below.

5.    Restart your Computer.

6.     Doublechecking...

    a.    (Press Windows Key + R) and enter "cmd"
    b.    type "ipconfig"
    c.    Find "IPv4 Address"
    d.    If this is the address you reserved, you did this correctly!

Firewall instructions Windows 7 / Vista
(others to come...)

1.    Open Control Panel

2.    Change "View by" to Large- or Small -Icons

# LAN issues...

Make sure steps above are done for your firewall(s).

1.    Set your network to "Private/Home" or "Work"...

2.    Make sure your firewall is configured correctly and not blocking the other computer.

3.    Make sure you have no active portforwarding (it re-directs all traffic to X-ip.)

4.    Set your router to Bridge if you have enough IP's to go around.
       - if not try UPNP .

5.    Remember to reboot, can also fix issues. :D

These are the ports used by EA Origin, if problem still persists you can try portforwarding these and making sure Origin has the same settings as Mass Effect™ 3 on your firewall.

# Origin also uses default HTTP & HTTPS ports but forwarding these to your machine could prevent anybody else on your LAN to use their webbrowsers properly without a proxy.

# You can also try disabling "flood detection" from your router which may also be interfering with game hosting.

Like mentioned if your router is on UPNP- or Bridge -mode portforwarding will not benefit you.

Remember that disabling your firewall is NOT a solution and it does open yoru computer to hackers and malware.

9960-9969           TCP
1024-1124           TCP
18000                   TCP
18120                   TCP
18060                   TCP
27900                   TCP
28910                   TCP
29900                   TCP

1024-1124            UDP
18000                    UDP
29900                    UDP

If this doesn't solve your problem if possible, can somebody try to visit a friends place to see if you can host there?

I personally did have hosting issues, what was fixed with portforwarding.

I personally could host at a friends place before portforwarding was done.

If you have honestly done ALL steps mentioned above and the problem still persists.

Post the following maybe it can narrow down causes.

# If you wonder why to do this, imagine asking for help and quoting
"Okay there's 50 guys with this ISP and they all have the problem and they've done everything on their end to fix this."
- Wouldn't that make a more convincing take  to them rather than just go "I can't play."

Great guide! I just checked over my settings and they're all set as they should be. Only thing I noticed is that in this official post social.bioware.com/forums/forum/1/topic/343/index/9271235 they state port 3659 and not 5659 as you've listed. I've forwarded both both for certainty, still no go though.

Troubleshooting taken: Direct connection to modem, firewall disabled, windows clean boot. Did not fix the problem. Those three steps make it a VERY VERY high probability that the problem with with EA servers not client hardware.

Can also be your ISP, we have a simmilar problem with "Elisa" when it comes to gaming. Since if you think about it, if it was EAs hardware wouldn't everybody have a identical issue?

I've added the ports Origin uses aside of standard HTTP & HTTPS ports which would interfere with other people trying to view webpages in your LAN.

Got my ports from here,

https://help.ea.com/...t-3-multiplayer

and also matches some googled port numbers for ME3.

I could play multiplayer fine last wekend. Since then, it gets stuck at the laoding screen and then stays there untill I restart my computer. Sometimes I can get to task manager to close the program, but it will stay running. I have to restart the computer.

Could you mention your OS & Bitrate?
- If you've got a MAC / OS X / Linux and running ME3 in pararell desktops I'm not sure if I can assist you.

You can try making a new adminstrative profile/account for your os, and running Origin as a adminstrator. (This fixed a problem you described to me which was almost identical to a friends problem on Windows 7)

Also while terminating ME3 with process management, if it doesn't work start chewing down EACoreServer & Origin processes, they might the cause aswe of your "Ghost ME3" which can't be terminated because it's just a minor bug... Not sure though, just a guess I had simmilar problems while I was curious how programs run in a sandbox with a ghost ME3 on.

Windows 7 32 bit. I use Norton 360, my windows firewall is disabled. I have ME3, launcher, origin and EA server set to open access on norton.

I do not have seperate accounts on my computer. The only account I have is admin.

Pull your client log file,
Your Client_Log.html file from Origin just after the problem occurs. Usually found at C:\\ProgramData\\Origin\\Logs

See what errors your getting, I am getting the Error below, after 4 clean installs of ME3 and Origin, and even getting a new product key code and new copy of ME3, EA says the issue is server side.

@nasheltron

Have you tried using the Windows 7 firewall instead of the Norton360?

I had a problem few weeks ago which resulted me to re-installing java & firewall with reconfigurations & reboots in between... Also ended up doing a clean install on my whole OS to fix it. In the end the same problem persisted so ended up giving up and sticking to Windows Firewall.

So don't think trying the Windows Firewall instead of the Norton 360 can be a good idea to test out.

I'm sure to ask the obvious, have you checked up with a ticket with EA's side since "Error 500" with severs is following:

The server (this case some MP authentication server) encountered an unexpected condition that prevented it from fulfilling the request by the client (ME3) for access to the requested URL.

"This error can only be resolved by fixes to the web server software. It is not a client-side problem. It is up to the operators of the Web server site to locate and analyse the logs which should give further information about the error."

ok, I got it fixed. I had to uninstall Origin + ME3 and reinstall it. Not sure what the issue was though. I had EA call me and gave them tons on info about troubleshooting the issue + system data + the log info. They are suposed to get back within 10 days. Once they do I will post what the offical problem was. Maybe you wont have to waste hours like I did.

Hi Guys , I have started facing this strange issue 2 days back and i realized it when I was trying to invite my friend to a private game but he was unable to join and I was unable to join his game. Let me explain the whole process and the problem in detail.

I log into my Origin and then I launch my Mass Effect 3 which takes me to the main screen. It takes a few seconds and connects to the server and then following this I click on the Multiplayer button which takes me to the Mutiplayer menu.
After this when i try to search for a 'Quick Game' it shows me a screen where it continuously searches for the games with no result .
Then I try to create a public game and decided to wait for someone to come to the lobby which was also not possible as people might be having the same issue trying to connect to MY game.

I spoke to EA help and they asked me to do a few trouble shoots which consist of Checking the Firewall , Removing the unwanted programs , Deleting the Temp files , Re installing the Origin software and repairing the Game and lastly to check on my UDP and my TCP ports which I did i.e. opening the Ports manually .

Sadly the problem still persist and I wonder what could be wrong. If you would please help me with the problem I would be greatly appreciate it

Regards,

Arjun
