AFK leeching at an all-new high.

Something as simple as bringing up the menu and being able to highlight a player on the scoreboard and then press spacebar/A button (lol spacebar/A button for more functions) to bring up a list of options, such as votekick, mute player, and anything else that's useful.

One badge is easy. One gold badge is harder.
I have never- NEVER- seen a person play a game of Gold without getting at least one badge. I came in at Wave 10 once, because my XBox Live kicked me off and I had to get invited back- and I was still able to get my 5 Melee Kills and 10 Headshots before game's end.
If you can't get a single badge when you play from the beginning of the game, there is something ridiculously wrong with you.
Mind you, I'm not supporting the idea, but I am saying, getting a single gold badge is not hard. At least not unless you SHOULD be playing on Bronze and you keep getting killed before you can earn a badge- in which case, get off Gold.
Hate to stop your inane tirade there, but I don't think you know what a "gold badge" is.
1 grab - bronze badge
3 grabs - silver badge
5 grab - gold badge
If you don't get that, there is something ridiculously wrong with you.

"gold badge"
Maybe next time you should specify- are you suggesting that, instead of only granting credits when they have at least one badge, that they should only grant credits when they have at least one gold badge?

worst score at the end of the mission gets nothing. That's my solution.
Your "solution" sucks.
The worst suggestion I have ever read EVER.

Howabout you don't get a share in the loot if you don't earn at least one badge?
I would put it at one badge. That should be a very low and resonable bar, and still pressure the sleeper bots to do something intelligent. Timers can be defeated by scripts. Actually earning a few assists will need a human.

How can I be more specific? It's a badge, and the color of the badge is gold.
It could be that you just made a stupid assumption and then followed it up with a stupid rant.

Finally all three of us are down and he's the only one left, so all three of us are watching his feed. And he's not there - just his unmanned Salarian hiding as the minutes ticked by. A Phantom found him but she got herself stuck behind a wall partition so couldn't kill him. Finally an Altas made it's way up there and we got to see it waste him.
Whee.
Ah well, I mostly blame myself for backing into the Phantom. We could have carried leecher dude otherwise.

Encountered my first AFK player today, in Bronze of all places. We didn't mind except on a Hack wave my Krogan backed into a Phantom (one-shotted) and the weaker of the other two went down, leaving only one guy in the hack fighting off everything. Other dude was up in the control tower area crouched and AFK.

Carrying a leecher only encourages their behavior. If you leave, they're stuck in a game alone, getting nothing. I never make the attempt to carry a leecher, because that's exactly what they need you to do.

Because you weren't actually saying anything. He made a suggestion, and he said "badge"- all you did was say "hurr durr, a badge is easy, a gold badge isn't". AND..? What are you trying to suggest?

The game was actually quite funny too, since this dude kept saying; "You're nothing without me!" and then in the next second got himself killed by some weaker enemy. It was hilarious and seriously cracked me up. He actually died quite a lot and we never even tried to revive him. In the end - after a lot of garbage from him - it was very satisfying to see him hanging in a banshee's grasp (still up there in central junction) , while the rest of us were being picked up by the shuttle. I feel no remorse over that one.

Most of the (sane) solutions put forward so far would just encourage someone to put forth a bit of effort before going afk or only come back for certain events like the money rounds.

I would love to have a mid match kick, and a corresponding join game in progress so we can get that slot filled.

I hate afk ppl in my games as much as many others, but typically you should notice someone afk rather quickly, if you leave you're out what, 10 minutes of time? It really isn't that big of a deal, if it is then...
Also frankly with an in match kick system, I would kick people who can't pull their own weight.

And you suggested that I meant a badge in gold difficulty, and went into a big stupid rant about it, and made an ass of yourself. What are you suggesting? I made this thread, what do you think I'm suggesting? Is it somehow a vague conversation that doesn't have the clear direction of finding a way to eliminate leechers?
You can try to foolishly draw your own conclusions about what I said, but I only said that any badge would be too easy, and that higher badge tiers were not. If that simple sentence confused you, I'll pretend to hide my lack of surprise for your sake.

As much as an in match kick system would be nice, the ability to abuse/troll people with it makes it more problematic.

First of all, you'd have to be matched with three people who are willing to try and kick you. Which, considering the odds of that versus getting one person who's simply trying to get free XP and credits, is considerably less prevalent.
And what is wrong with kicking people who don't pull their weight? I would love to eliminate people who don't help on objectives, people who are just half-assing their way through, people spamming shockwave in front of the sniper. A kick feature would be a solution to such much of the useless trolling that internet anonymity gives these social rejects the capacity to do without being slapped in the mouth.

People, myself included, don't want to leave games because they lose their consumables.
An in-game votekick is practically no different to the votekick in the lobby. The possibility of it being abused is barely any higher, to be honest. Very rarely would all 3 players actually votekick an innocent player, unless they are afk-leeching, are annoying/trolling, or are not good enough, which are all perfectly fine reasons for placing a votekick.
Many other games have votekick system and while none are 100% perfect, they're better than what is currently available in ME3.

There are some creative solutions proposed here (like requiring intermittent input or risk a kick). Anything involving score-based gatekeeping would be terribly unwise, though. Never mind the unfairness of that toward less skilled players (though I think that it would be terribly unfair and jackassy); it simply wouldn't work as intended. You simply do not get nearly as many points for assists and revivals as you get for damage, so sooner or later you're going to accidentally auto-kick the adept/sentinel who's focusing on setting up detonations, or the engineer who's focusing on drawing enemy fire, or the infiltrator who is focusing on revivals and objectives. The scoreboard only shows who hit the hardest, not who did the most. You'll only be screwing yourself over by losing these people.
