Update PhysX drivers.
Check temps.
Turn off sound to see if it fixes it.
I think you need some dual core fix thing from AMD too, not sure. Their early dual core cpus were craptastic IIRC.

This is a quote from my other post. You can see bunch of other people having the same issues.

I've formatted my HDD and re-installed windows. Only installed what was necessary, windows updates, drivers and Steam, I'm still getting random freezing.
Its a completely clean install of both Windows and Dragon Age, I've even defragmented my HDD before running DAO.
This is the only game I'm getting this issue. I can play Warhammer 40k Dawn of War 2, Team Fortress and Empire Total War for hours without any issues whatsoever.
Here's a list of things I've tried and didn't worked so far:
# Rolled back to old drivers
# Installed latest drivers
# Tried every single graphic option combination
# Underclocked both GPU and CPU
# Tried changing Affinity
# Closed every single program on the background
# Disabled Anti-Virus and Firewall
# Uninstalled all unnecessary applications
# Defragged the Hard Disk Drive
# Unplugged all USB hardware including Keyboard and Mouse (switched back to PS/2)
# Decreased the Sound Acceleration
# Disabled Sound
# Uninstalled Sound Card and tried onboard sound
# Checked overheating and both CPU and GPU is solid
# Reinstalled all necessary runtimes, from scratch
# Closed my eyes and prayed to gaming gods
# Formatted my HDD and reinstalled VistaSystem Specs:
# Vista x64 SP2
# MSI P35 Platinum MB
# Intel E4500 @3.0ghz
# 6GB DDR 800 RAM
# ATI Radeon 4830 GPU
# Creative X-Fi GamerMy latest suspicion is the Intel Chipset Drivers, haven't seen any AMD processors getting the same issue (yet).
There were loads of other people that were having the same issues on the old forums, but I guess they gave up.
Last thing that was left was either Intel Chipset drivers, or Realtek general drivers. Since you don't have an intel system, and I've met others who doesn't have any realtek (sound or network) whatsoever, I'm truly lost.
I've formatted and installed the game on bare minimum XP 32-Bit, Vista 32 and 64-Bit, and now doing my 4th clean re-download from Steam. I've done lots of other things, I can't even bother listing them all as I've lost the track.
I've been waiting for a response from EA support since release. Despite all the odds though, I've finished the game with quick-saving at every corner. It says 50 hours in my character profile but its more like 85 hours. I hope next patch resolves this issue as I'm dying to play the game with a different class/origin.

First things I always used to check when I worked as a tech were system temps and bad ram.
Those AMD cpu's seemed to have some issuess as well I think, but I've not touch an AMD cpu since the Socket-A Athlons.

I use Avira and it doesn't matter if I uninstall or deactivate it.

I'm wondering if the issue may be related to the background services that AVG runs. how many people are running AVG 9.0?
If I were feeling malicious I would perhaps rather say "maybe the anti virus background services that AVG run react to the behavior of certain elements of DA:O", but in order to maintain the pleasant atmosphere I will not do so.
Am using avast! and have no problems with the game, but won't play online again, probably.

Anyway AVG 9.0 is well known to minimize games randomly, maybe it was crashing your game instead of minimizing it.

Well, when I uninstalled my codecs, I was able to play 5 hours straight without any issues. I even made a post about it on old forums, but a day later it came back, started freezing again. I hope thats not the case with your system.

same here, because I've tried all other suggestions to no avail. It is the only consistent thing I've seen so far though for me. I uninstalled AVG for my girlfriend yesterday and she was able to play Dragon Age for her 2 hour play session wihtout any issues .
her PC specs:
AMD Athlon X2 @ 2.7 GHZ
2 gig DDR2 RAM
Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT 512mb
Windows XP Home SP3
I feel like I'm reaching for straws at this point with no tech support from EA and very little word from Bioware. I have the xb360 version also but I really like the PC version better.

I'm not understanding how antivirus affects a game in this way? I own other bioware products ( Mass Effect, Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2, all the expansions as well) and they have never had this issue but then again I also didn't have version 9.0 at the time either.

I tried running with gfx all the way up and all the way down, but I seem to get the same amount of freezing. I lowered my screen resolution which seemed to lessen the frequency of actual gameplay crashes, but I still get TONS of black screen lock-ups right as area loading screens start. They are a pain because I also cannot alt-tab out- I have to do a physical shutdown (which makes me cringe!) I have had to bypass Denerim because whenever I would go into a building I couldn't get back out without a lockup.
It would be less frustrating if "offical tech support" were available to help, but I emailed them three weeks ago and still haven't gotten a response.

I also use avast! for antivirus and haven't had any issues playing the game. I distinctly recall having AVG before and uninstalling it because of a conflict with another program while running.

Do you happen to remember what program AVG was having a conflict with?

I am running into the exact same random freezing/crashing issue. I am also running an Nvidia 7800 card, but I do not have AVG (I have Norton). I have installed all the latest drivers.

Are you running Windows XP as well, or Vista/7 ?

Nah, it's been a long time. It probably was another game.

I'm running McAfee antivirus, I played for 2.5 hours today, twice the screen went to solid colors of purples and pinks, all solids, then at the end I was going thru my inventory and it froze up and as always I have no choice but to hard boot...Everyone that has posted here knows more than me, so saying I'm clueless is pointless.
Well, there goes my theory, I guess it's just coincidence that it's working okay for me now.

my graphics card is the only thing different and its a geforce 8600GTS.
i dont have freezes like you, but i have had a couple bsod and alot of CTDs. with amd fusion shutting down all non essential processes. dual core optimizer, latest gpu, sound, mobo, and cpu drivers. da:o doesnt like the 9600 or 9800s much for nvidia =\\ latest drivers fixed some graphical errors for me on mine, yet i still get crashes.
i think the problem is with da:o itself and we might need to just wait for a patch =\\
