I have attempted to playthrough Baldur's Gate twice now. The first time my computer crashed shortly after I made my way through the Nashkel mines and I lost my save. The second time, I was having a blast but suddenly realized that to my horror I had killed every single NPC who brings you to or shows you the Bandit Camp. Frustrated I didn't have the heart to start over once again. Now I am starting Baldur's Gate 1 up again and hopefully will be able to finish it this time...

I am playing the Vanilla Baldur's Gate, no mods installed. I plan on playing a True Neutral human fighter who will be the tank in my party. In the past my party has not had the greatest success. I usually end up with way to many healers and lack a good high damage dealing spellcaster. I am roleplaying the game and wanted to ask some questions such as:
What is a decent party set up? I don't need names, just classes.
Are there any necessary potions or equipment that I should keep with my party at all times?
What is a decent equipment setup for my character? (Armour, Weapon, Sheild or no Sheild, potions, scrolls, etc.)
I have a big problem dealing with the Ankheg things, is there anything that will help me defeat them? (Besides simply power leveling to a high level.)
Are quests the only way to make a decent amount of money? (I will not be stealing anything so that isn't an option.)

Any other tips or tricks are welcome as well.

Any party make-up can be successful, but you might want to start with the following:
1 thief to find traps and open locks
1 cleric for healing
1 mage for spells
2 fighters for tanks
The fighters could be multi or dual classed if you want. The sixth spot could be used however you want.

I would suggest you keep healing potions and antidotes with you all the time as they will often save lives of low-level characters. You may find it useful to have things that all characters can use to create fireballs, e.g. by potion or necklace of missiles (bought at the Carnival).

If your main character is a tank then he will want the best armour (full plate available in Beregost once you can afford it). You will want to carry a shield for stronger enemies, but may not always equip it (depending on whether you want to specialise in a 2-handed weapon or not). Helpful potions for stronger enemies are speed and heroism.

The easiest way to kill ankhegs is from range. Make sure that your tank is the one they attack and equip them with protection against missiles, e.g. through boots of avoidance, cloak of displacement, belt of piercing or Claw of Kazgoroth. It's simple to get to a level of protection that means the ankhegs require a 20 to hit. If they do try to come into melee then your tank can just move away a few steps meaning the ankheg will burrow down to get to him (the other party members will still be targeting it with missiles while it is underground). Repeat as necessary. If you want you can use scroll of protection against acid to reduce the damage ankhegs do.

Significant amounts of money that come to mind are:
- selling ring of wizardry found at the Friendly Arm.
- returning Basillus' symbol to Beregost temple.
- taking treasure from pirate cave.
- taking treasure from ankheg nest.

A couple of other pointers:
- wands are very useful. You can easily pick up wand of monster summoning from one of the tombs in the area you exit the Nashkel mines in - use sanctuary or green scroll of protection from undead to avoid needing to fight at all.
- Algernon's Cloak is incredibly useful. It can charm the vast majority of enemies for 24 hours at a time (so you can rest and they will still be charmed).
- the bracers of dexterity found on the ogrillons at the gnoll stronghold make a big difference to how good NPCs are as a tank.

I haven't had much time to play BG :(. But this I have managed to get to chapter 2 of the game and I think I am fairly well off. I actually decided to play a Paladin in the end, so that is the only thing different from what I said earlier.

My party consists of Imeon, Khalid, Jahera, Gerrick, and Safara. (Sorry if the names are misspelled.) Me and Khalid both have Plate Armor (not Full Plate) and I have a pretty decent amount of gold. I will probably leave Safara after finishing her treasure quest and then Gerrick so I can pick up Minsc and that Invoker lady who he follows.

Right now I am doing a few side quests to level up, everyone in my party is level two except for Safara who is 1 and Imoen who is 3. I did have a question though. My Constitution is 14 and my starting HP was 11, when I leveled I only increased to 13 HP! Is there a reason for this, because I having such low HP will suck later in the game.

Warrior type classes (fighter, rangers and paladins essentially) hugely benefit from having a CON of 18 - other classes are well-off with 16.

I'm a bit surprised that you started with 11 HPs. In BG constitution bonuses don't start until 15, so your starting HPs should have been 10 (you start with the maximum available die roll at level 1 and paladins use a d10). That suggests your installation may have a bug.

Playing on core rules HP rolls after level 1 are random so you will get anywhere from 1-10 HPs each level. If you want to get the maximum HP roll each time then just reduce the game difficulty just before you're levelling up and then increase it back again afterwards.

Oops, my Constitution is actually 15 which explains the extra HP. I haven't gotten much further, just been trying to level up a bit. I also learned that it is unwise to use items that you don't have identified. I put on this belt thing and my character switched from a male to a female. :(

^ Image IPB Hehe...yes the infamous 'girdle' of masculinity/femininity...

Don't worry - it's quite unique an item - and the curse can be removed via a spell or at most temples, if I recall correctly...

I also find the game more tolerable when exploring over a dozen map areas when I set the AI updates to 60 per second, up from 30.
