As far as I know, armour doesn't protect you from spell damage at all, only physical.

Use whatever disabling or interrupting abilities you have to stop the hostile mage from casting spells, then close in rapidly and focus fire on him. If you have any means of disabling him or other enemies in the encounter completely, make liberal use of them (Cone of Cold, Paralyze, Sleep, Horror, Force Field, Crushing Prison, etc.). Try to remove as many enemy combatants as possible from the fight, single out the remaining ones and kill them one by one.

well i was playing on easy mode. I was hoping to avoid all that work.

easy mode says "if you want to play in real time this is the mode for you"....

But i guess not.

everybody is so nice and that is great. But still Jensonagain just give up. go read a book or watch a movie. Games are not for you if you don't want to play them. Sorry u need to set up tactics for your party members just a bit and you should be fine. But u don't want to do that again go read a book it will provide a much better story than DA:O.
Sorry for being an ass but this is how i see things.

fine the game is not for me. whatever.

i like the story though.

Unfortunately that's the harsh reality of it. This game requires some thought put into combat tactics here and to be quite frank you are not missing a whole lot from the story.

If you are really just interested in the story - try this -

http://www.gamespot....tag=tabs;cheats

I don't recommend it though, it spoils the game.

what party members are you using? use your mages and give everyone else a bow or crossbow and mow down the caster first. then pause, switch everyone back to melee weapons and start mowing them down. this has been a hard lesson I've had to learn: always mow down the caster first, regardless of who is smashing your face with a sword. fireballs hurt!

or if you have paralyze or horror (not sure if horror has the range though) just throw that at the caster, and work on the other dudes while the caster is incapacitated.

Here is what happens.

1. I kill the mercenry
2. I kill the wolf
3. My life is at 75% and a fireball hits me and i'm screwed.
4. It hits hte rest of my party
5. Then I run into another trap and it blows up knocking me down
6. Then the mage comes down and casts lightning.
7. By now at least 1-2 of my party are dead
8. I double checked and i'm on easy mode
9. by now i'm screwed..

??

They should make a brain-dead mod, where there are no enemies whatsoever and the bosses take 3 hits to kill.

That'd be boring, but fun for some people though :innocent:

c'mon dude, it's just a single pause to switch weapons, and it gets you past a part of the game you're obviously having a hard time with. wanting to play in real time is great and all but isn't pausing once better than not ever getting any further in the game?

Uggh, I have a feeling this is just the beginning. I'd rather play on a mode where I never have to pause and I can just use some abilities on my own char and just watch everyone kill people.  Then enjoy a good cutscene.

Then an advice for you : Don't play these kinds of game while you're exhausted, it'll ruin the mood to strategically think, the point of this game is how to manage your party and their talents/spells to defeat their enemies, CoD or any FPS game should be the game for ya

how about this then: in the tactics window you can set your mages and/or ranged characters to attack mages first. use one of the top tactics slots, select enemy>nearest visible class>mage (I think that's how it goes, anyway) as your condition, and then choose attack for the action. that might take a little of the gameplay out of taking the mage out first.

As you go along you pick up different items, warmth balm, elixer of grounding etc. These protect extra from lightning and fire damage. If you can do ranged attacks on the mage either with an archer or another mage that is helpful. Use the Fire or Ice arrows if you have them they do more damage. If you have built Alistair as a templar he can also drain the area of magic which might help. I'm relatively new to the RPG on console and computer my self, but managed to beat the game once on easy and once on normal on the xbox and now I have it for PC so my husband does not wine the whole time I'm playing. There are only a few spots that strategy is needed on easy. Baiting enimies 1 by 1 with your archer is good to . Hold the rest of the partys motion get just close enough to pull one enemy or a small group and take them on in smaller numbers. That works well in other spots not sure if it will help in this particular encounter.

Im the same. I'm an older gamer and don't have lots of time to mess around learning all the intricates of the game let alone remember all the names of people, places, and things thrown at you in microscopic text dialog boxes.

I'm going through on easy but am enjoying the game:

Here are my suggestions:

Concentrate your level up points in particular areas for each character; don't spread the points out as you will have a jack of all trades and master of none.

All the different option for spreading out points are meant to make the game re-playable so you can play a diff way in another game.

Don't be afraif to run a console script if you find a battle you can't win after 6 or so tries.

Don't be afraid to run a console command to give you some money if you want to have fun with a power item.

Read my other posts if you can find the, as they are very important questions for beginners IMO.

Master that task bar and arrange it in a good order super important for one who does not want to remember key assignments. Use the pause to access it during and before battle.

Save batlle save battle save battle.

i tried that, they still died.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.  I know this is supposed to be easy on easy mode but it's not.

I'm close to giving up soon.

yeah don't know what to tell you then. if you nuke that caster right away the battle is over in like a minute and you shouldn't lose anyone in the party (or at least that's how it's been for me on normal). you just need to find a way to get rid of the caster first and your problems are over.

I can kill the first 3 people real real fast.

Then all of a sudden my health drops to like 10%.

Then a dog and a two handed guy come finish me off.

Then alistair dies.

then leilana & morrigan go down.
