Game is still too difficult on easy mode with 1.01a patch.

In real life you don't fight on the enemies choice of terrain unless you have no choice. Make them come to you, choose where you fight and the fight is on your terms not theirs. Things only go south when you charge in like you are doing, because the designers have made the encounters generally in such a way as to punish that.
Easy is just that easy...but it is not brain dead simple. And if you aren't going to pause you have to invest time and effort in choosing tactics and behaviors to suit. Lord only knows what the defaults are but frankly they are close to useless as they rarely include anything as simple as health < 25% use least potent heal potion.
Hear is a hint that will make the game easier: STOP (Stop, Think, Observe, Plan) while the game is paused.
Also if you aren't going to pause and issue specific orders to the NPCs you have to figure out what they will do and adapt what you do to what they do as they work on a script but you don't. Half of peoples complaints about AI behaviors stems from the fact they don't want to adapt to the NPCs script...and the NPC can't adapt to you nor can the computer (thankfully) read your mind.
But you have to invest something in the game to get through it even on easy. If you are not willing to do that then kiss the money you spent on the game goodbye and play something else that you find enjoyable.

1. Play the game strategically, taking control of your party and possibly using the pause button, as it was intended to be played.
2. Cheat
3. Give up.
Personally, I would go for 1. If that failed, I'd go for 2. But since you refuse to do 1 or 2, I think that really only leaves 3.

I think there should be a "retard" difficulty, where you have unlimited mana, hitpoints and mobs have 1 hitpoint, so we can get rid of the forum crying about difficulty.

I still propose a brain-dead mod
or patch so that those with sub-average cognitive ability can enjoy the
game as well, such as Jensonagain.

Obvious troll is obvious. I mean seriously... Apparently you just go out, buy a game, and pay no attention to anything about it? Please give the game to someone who deservers it as you sure as hell dont. Go play pong or is that too hard for you too? "Oh gee..i gotta press a button...i want easy mode!..why do i have to even breathe?"
TC is an idiot.
He didn't buy the game. It's not registered to his account and I'm pretty sure that we caught him pirating in another, spoiler-filled topic in which he continuously cried because another encounter was too hard and he refused to use healers or potions.

As far as I know, armour doesn't protect you from spell damage at all, only physical.
Use whatever disabling or interrupting abilities you have to stop the hostile mage from casting spells, then close in rapidly and focus fire on him. If you have any means of disabling him or other enemies in the encounter completely, make liberal use of them (Cone of Cold, Paralyze, Sleep, Horror, Force Field, Crushing Prison, etc.). Try to remove as many enemy combatants as possible from the fight, single out the remaining ones and kill them one by one.
well i was playing on easy mode. I was hoping to avoid all that work.
easy mode says "if you want to play in real time this is the mode for you"....
But i guess not.
everybody is so nice and that is great. But still Jensonagain just give up. go read a book or watch a movie. Games are not for you if you don't want to play them. Sorry u need to set up tactics for your party members just a bit and you should be fine. But u don't want to do that again go read a book it will provide a much better story than DA:O.
Sorry for being an ass but this is how i see things.
fine the game is not for me. whatever.
i like the story though.
Yeah, he definitely was not trying to be mean to you. I don't know what to say to make this any better for you...but you are going to have to put in some sort of effort in playing the game in order to advance the story. Having it on easy mode and then just letting the party members run themselves while not spending the time to at least have a basic strategy planned out just isn't going to help you advance the story. At some point you are going to have to intervene and do a basic amount of micro-managing.

Dont be such an as$hole.
OP if you're just wanting to play through for the story that's fair enough but keep playing and you'll start to understand the combat system and even though you may want to play in real time judicious use of pausing here and there will really help out. Exploit the tactics system and make your guy a mage and spec him into an arcane warrior/blood mage as this is a very powerful build.
Good luck, stick with it and have fun!
