Considering people have played solo on Nightmare, I'd say it is doable.

solo on nightmare jesus well one more thing to ask who would be better to use WarDog? he is very fast and very powerful but he can't use taunt which i thought it be awesome if he could but yeah or Shale? i never used shale or even met him i just got all the DLC for this game and i was wondering if Shale is any good?

Shales strength is her versatility. She has several different modes that can be varied according to your party composition or tactical needs.

Just off hand I'd say Leliana doesn't do that much damage. Why not take Shale instead of her?
Shale needs good crystals and mostly Stength and Constitution so is pretty easy to play. She can't be grabbed which is good against certain bosses.  Come to think of it Dog can't be Grabbed either.  Two guys that can't be grabbed is very good.

One of the main advantages of having a mage is with crowd control. So a team with no mage needs to find ways to make up for the lack.

When I play without a mage I like to have one or more of the following: a 2H warrior who has two-handed sweep, which can knock down several enemies at once; and/or an archer with scattershot, which can stun multiple enemies at once; and/or a companion who can set traps or throw bombs.

I have played a couple of times without a mage in my team. Definitely it is do-able. Probably there are many ways it can be done.
