The only thing I disagree with about your post is that opinions being what they are, there is no need for validity :) You can have an irrational opinion if you like, nothing stopping you. Getting other people to agree with that opinion on the other hand...

It has less to do with valid opinions and more to do with them either: a) being mindless sheep who's only coherent thought is what the media tells them to think, B) trying to get a reaction out of others (a.k.a trolls), c) being ignorant, d) really believing that they have the right to tell other people what they can or can not do, e) being jerks.

Love how the ignorant make fun of something or say it should be abolished.

What really ticks me off is the argument "children should not be able to see this" or "this desensitizes children to violence". There is a bloody M rating on the game! Parents should take their heads out of their asses and not mindlessly buy the game for their 13 year old kid and then **** and moan about it later. grr.

I think they just look at the level of discourse on game forums, the language and spelling choices, and go from there.

That would mean politics are meant for children, then?

Besides, you don't HAVE to see teh sex scenes. They CAN be skipped, or you can just not pursue the issue.

Yeah, it's like man/man relationship is forbidden while F/F is not..

Hello..? they both are same sex relationships! [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/uncertain.png[/smilie]

The problem is society remains male oriented and men are full of themselves. (For example, I know I am awesome. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/whistling.png[/smilie])
So when a guy sees F/F, they really feel like they can join in. Note
that it's only hot women that are acceptable for F/F, otherwise "******"
wouldn't be used in a derogatory way.

See, from a female perspective, that's just stupid.
I have no doubt that you are awesome, although I have not spoken to you enough to form my own opinion. People may tell me you're awesome, but I prefer to think for myself.
I HATE THAT *GRR*
I have nothing against homosexuals, as I had said before in a previous post, I have gay friends. Guy and girl alike. HELL, I even have a friend that has boobs and a penis. My gay girlfriend however, isn't what most would consider 'hot'. In fact, I broke someone's arm and nose once in college for throwing razorblades at her and calling her a '******'. Now, don't get me wrong, she's short and stocky (very Dwarven Male, if you would), but she doesn't need to be called such things. I hate words like that. I hate words like '****' too. However, I do know some African-American folk who call each other '****', but then get bent out of shape when a '******' calls them a '****'. Such an ass-backwards word we live in.

Ah, the 'it's a trap!' option. Course, the character doesn't seem disturbed by it, and shouldn't exposure, even if it is humourous, be good? Sure, the player/developer may find it funny, but the game world treats it tastefully.

Humor in and of itself isn't bad at all, of course.
When the joke is the characters very existence, however...

Well, that's just the thing though.

Since the game treats the choice as perfectly normal, the only reason it has any humourous value is because of the perspective of the player. Now, my memory may be shaky from the event, but as I recall there's no option for the character to be horrified from their selection in the pearl. They also aren't going to emerge from the encounter and be laughed at by their companions. It's treated as a very natural occurence inside the game.

If Oghren sniggered afterwards, or your PC made some comment on how disturbing/frightening/horrifying the experience was then I could see there being a problem.

To take another example, Sandal is a humourous character but I don't feel he negatively impacts the disabled community in real life.

I agree. The game treats it as an everyday occurance.

WHAT IF in say...10 years, being Heterosexual was the weird thing to be and Homosexuality was the norm?
Atleast it would solve out overpopulation problem, not to mention most gay couples adopt kids so that would help out that problem as well. ^_^
I don't think it'll happen in 10 years, but then again, maybe it could.
Back in the day, people never thought African-Americans would ever have rights or be more than slaves to the white folk. I suppose it's no different than the gay issue now, only it involves people of all nationalities/race/ethnicity. Which unfotunately, is going to make it that much harder because it's EVERYWHERE, ot just one country/location. However, I suppose if one country as a whole, like North America, were to legalize gay marriage, then we would have alot of people saving up and moving over here. But, even if it all becomes legalized and excepted, you're still going to have those people that absolutely ate the idea.

I think it works out something like this:

Man/Woman - straight man can imagine themselves as the man
Woman/Woman - straight man can happily imagine themselves taking part in some way, even just as an observer
Man/Man - straight man cannot imagine themselves taking part at all, in any fashion. Neither as a participant, nor an observer.

Even women and so-called "progressives" only deal with male homosexuality in the abstract "Oh those poor victims of discrimination, I must save them!" sense, or the "Look how cosmopolitan I am, some of my best friends are gay" variety.

But if you discuss the actual defining male/male acts, they are normally just as repulsed by the thought of it as mainstream society. Its often an involuntary physiological  response - like in The Crying Game where that guy pukes after seeing an unexpected snasauge appear.

When did North America become a country? Canada finally got fed up and invaded eh? Good on ye!

Doesn't the UK and serveral other Europe ones have legalised civil unions / marriages now anyway?

It's too long to read 10 pages of this thread, so I'll just pop in randomly and say that even if the man-on-man thing isn't my cup of tea in a rpg, and so I couldn't care less, it's still nice they added that since I found Mass Effect was a bit unfair on this part, giving the lesbian option but not the male counterpart for it.

I think the answer to that would be "poorly".

For a country with only a little over 33 million people in it, they don't do that great with health care. Sure it's free, but that has its own problems.

The US on the other hand has over 300 million people in it, it's a little bit harder to come up with a "free" health care system.

Personally, if they dropped the price of medical insurance to a reasonable amount and made the prices of medical systems more reasonable, I think the system would work much better in the US.

This is true too I suppose.

And yes, I agree. Medical care is just way to expensive. I mean, take Swine Flu for example. People are FREAKING OUT about it. They think if they have the sniffles, it's the Swine Flu. Most places (insurance companies and the like) won't cover you to get tested for Swine Flu and to get tested for it costs around $250 per person, or so my doctor told me when I went to get some blood drawn for my anemia.

While I would quite enjoy debating with you the merits of a universal health care system over privitized health care, this is neither Kimmel nor Dragon Age related and getting into extremely political territory.

Anyone else getting this feeling Mathewgurney is a troll? >.<  Too much time on other forums I suppose.  Otherwise, it sounds like he is saying that the persuit of violence is a worthy goal, whereas sex outside of reproduction is unworthy. =|

Well, I wouldn't necessarily jump to that conclusion.  I know many people who subscribe to the belief that violence is a safer "sin" than sex, although they don't simplify it as such.  I think it has to do with the current fashions of religion, and the belief that people (especially children) are more prone to being persuaded to make sexual mistakes as opposed to being persuaded to violence.

To be honest...if violence is supposed to be safer than sex...then we are still living backwards..no better than the generations that came before us.

Violence is NOT acceptable..I'm talking real life here.......and what two people do in the privacy of their own bedroom or whereever that might be, is their business not mine..not Joe Blow's down the street.

I was going to leave my opinions out of this, but I should probably clarify that I'm mostly in agreement with you, here.  My point was just that there are people who honestly think this way, no matter how strange it may seem to me or you.  Personally, I believe the concept of "sin" (which is often lurking in the background of arguments such as these, even if people don't realize it) is outdated and dangerous, and should probably just go away.

I wouldn't necesarily conclude that violence is unacceptable under all circumstances.  This is where it becomes important to teach children how to think, not what to think.

But, back OT:  Jimmy Kimmel is most likely being purposely controversial in order to increase fame/ratings.  This would, presumably, increase his payroll.  It's a fairly common tactic employed here, at least, in America.

What has it got to do with You what they do in the sack? Seriously, how self-righteous you are to think 1)you matter that much in general 2) that you matter that much in that persons life and 3) for trying to interfere in that persons life. Get the **** over yourself and move on. This thread just goes to show how little sexual difference are still not accept yet it's no ones business. How sad are we as a people to have this even matter anymore?

I think if it was confined to "what they do in the sack" most people wouldn't have a problem with it, but it's not.  It's not just about the personal relationship between two people in the privacy of their own home, they want to be accepted as an "equal alternative", which is where the problem is.  They are treated as victims because most people find homosexuality to be morally reprehensible and refuse to accept it as an alternative lifestyle.

It's not a "you do it your way, I'll do it my way" sort of thing.
  • They get special protection under hate crime laws, which means if I were to kill a gay person I would go to jail longer than if I killed a straight person, it's as if the life of a homosexual is worth more than the life a heterosexual.
  • At most public universities students are FORCED to pay a fee that goes to fund the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender club due to university policy or state, local, and/or federal laws, even if they are none of those things, while other clubs are required to do fund raising.
  • They are protected under Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity policies, which means that some people are hired or enrolled in universities simply because they are homosexual, while heterosexuals are put as a disadvantage.
It has nothing to do with "the sack".  It has to do with the fact that homosexuals are treated as victims.  If you choose to to enter a relationship with a member of the same sex, that's fine, but don't act as if you are a victim entitled to special treatment when the rest of the world frowns upon that.  Race, sex, ethnic background, and other characteristics that are often used in similar ways are different, people can't choose their race.

I'm not saying that I personally have a problem with homosexual relationships, but it's not as if everybody who isn't completely accepting of that lifestyle choice is a bigot trying to press their moral view on other people.  I think a lot of people are just sick of everybody who isn't a white, heterosexual, male being treated a if they are a victim in need of special assistance to be successful in life.
