The animations for ME3 were a step down from ME2. How the hell that happened I really have no clue.

ME2 wasn't so obviously rushed. I absolutely detest game studios rushing games out the door to make a quick buck, especially when the game is obviously not finished.

ME2's ending wasn't complete and utter BS that invalidated not only that game but the entire trilogy and everything we learned from the universe in 5 minutes.

ME2's plot didn't hinge on some magical deus ex machina superweapon at just the right moment plot

ME2's scanning missions were actually fun compared to ME3's and at least you could visit some planets for some short missions.

I could go on for a while but you get the point I think. The only thing where ME3 was better than ME2 was the character interaction, and that's ONLY because Shepard's companions would really walk around and talk to each other. Personally I also think the romance arcs were better than ever (even though I only romanced Liara and also got that ridiculous opt out scene on citadel that was completely out of place).

So yeah, ME3 really doesn't cut it next to ME2. I think ME2 is superior in almost every way.

I have noticed ME2 is being criticized for being the "filler" episode with no connection to ME1. Let me tell you why I think ME2 was a really great game and a worthy part of the series.

ME1 had a great, original and emotionally fulfilling story, but it messed in the "shooters" category and didnt have the mechanics to bear its weight at all times.

ME2 came out as a middle of a trilogy and I (in opposition to many people here) think it did very well. In the first game we were given the first part of a plot, "great big robots are coming to eat the galaxy". Cool. On the way to save the galaxy you find its populated and really, really, REALLY big. Finally you save the world while uncovering a BIIIG secret, but also with a certainty, that the great big robots will try again.

I saw the ME2 as a tool to describe the ME universe in much greater detail, giving us even more great characters. There is no place for detailed description of the world in the beginning of the saga, where we get to know the basic principles and laws of the universe. And you should already know all of this at the end of the saga (meaning ME3) where you finally uncover all the deep truths and solve all the great problems and should already work with all the said knowledge. So I view the plot about the collectors, while not really advancing us on the path to stop the reapers, as a way to get to know the world we will have to fight for in the last game. Of course I liked the plot and the characters back-stories very much too.

But there is one thing I think the ME2 did much better even then ME1(which was totally awesome and great, dont think I dont know that). And that ladies and gentlemen is the ending. It was done in totally new and original way (at least for me). We gathered a numerous team and when we finally got to the ending we got to use them ALL. Some went with you, others did other things - no matter it was off-stage. In all other games where you gather your team (for example DA, DA2, ME, not talking about ME3) you take only few of all your followers while the rest sleeps in your camp / onboard of your ship. I never grasped why the developers (in this case Bioware) never thought of this before. You go into the last big battle where you would really like all your teammates (even those you felt were totally useless the whole time) to help, but they tell you goodbye fare well and we will grab some R&R while you fight it out with the boss. This was my problem with all the above mentioned games until ME2 came along.
Damn, I hoped ME3 would pull something similar........ how disappointed was I when I found myself at the end of ME3 not with a couple of teammates, but ALONE, while the WHOLE of my team went on holiday to some safer sector of the galaxy.......

....... I rest my case.

ME2 didn't have a **** ending. In fact the suicide mission was probably the highpoint of the series.

Here's mine: ME2 much more strongly reflected the choices you made in ME1. For example, who you picked for counselor in ME1 plays a big role in ME2 (i.e. your Spectre status)

Uh, no. That was one of the only things in ME2 that didn't seem to make a difference at all.

The Suicide Mission is the better reason to say ME2 own ME3. The final mission in ME2 is really fantastic, with an epic soundtrack behind ! :o
Not like the ME3 last mission... :(

ME2 has better characters, story, endind and music.

ME3 has better gameplay, graphics and sound effects.

So ME2 > ME3

ME2 is only better than ME3 because the story didn't **** everything up and made sense even though nothing really happens. Also the sidemissions are much better.

Three hub worlds, polish, even asari didn't all look the same, even petty side quests people would maybe never see. Also, Shepard in ME2 didn't accept all the bull**** that came his way without a single critical question asked.

For some rEAson, somebody gave the game with most plots to close, most important mission for the galaxy and MP on top of that least time to develop.

Mass Effect 2 is better than both its predecessor and successor. For me, it was the perfect blend of cinematics, dialogue, with absolutely superb presentation.

Back then I complained about ME2 overall feeling too narrow, like there is a big galaxy but you are restricted to small corridors. In comparison now to ME3 ME2 actually feels a lot more open and ends up showing many different faccets of the galaxy while ME3 has a servere lack in that regard.

Also, while the main plot was bad in ME2 the individual character stories were great. There are only two good story lines in ME3 which are the genophage and the quarian/geth conflict in my opinion.

Overall ME2 also din't feel rushed to me. Yes, some side missions had a drastic drop in production quality but the bulk of the game had a quite high and even standard while the quality rises and drops like in a rollercoaster in ME3, with the biggest quality drop coming at the worst time, the ending.

I think there's a very big contrast with how they deal with dead characters in the krogan campaign and the quarian campaign. With the krogan campaign you could have Mordin and Wrex in the mission, two characters who could die in previous games. Not-Wrex and Not-Mordin were fleshed out characters. By the time we get to the quarian campaign you see this attention to detail dropped significantly. Not-Legion looks, acts and sounds like Legion, except he's not Legion.

The Implementation of the ending.

Your actions in the game impact on how well you do with the Suicide Mission. Yes its easy to get a perfect victory, but its also easy to sabatoge it.

Unlike ME3 where we spend the entire game trying to build up a number (EMS) that has no impact on the ending, unless you want a half second extra cut scene...which you cant get anyway without multiplayer...

I still dont get why i build up war resources only to have the game inform me that, no matter what, 50% of Hammer didnt make it. First run through i actually thought i messed up somewhere.

That's because Mass Effect 2 had the right amount of auto-dialog. They went two steps too far with ME3.
