In the mage tower there is a small painted box that belongs to the First Enchanter.

Does it do anything?

you bring it to a mysterious doorway in the Denerim market district. small reward for it. thats all.

You don't get the Codex entry for that, i.e. the quest to do the delivery, until Zev does his ambush of you. You'll get a letter off one of the assassins.
