good shooter with a decent storytelling and horrible plotholes.

Not good enough to compete against classic BW RPGs

Oh wait...Throne of Bhaal has a big plothole...oops

Jade Empire/ Mass effect 1,2 / Dragon Age Origin / KOTOR

far less plotholes.

Jade Empire has some bad bad contrived writing......Dawn Star says...lets go to Dirge!!!!!

The entire side quest structure of ME1 was a PLOT HOLE.....I guess Saren has all day.

Wow i'm at a loss for words i can't tell if you like Mass Effect or hate it? ME3 has plotholes.

So does ME1, which makes the entire side quest structure idiotic.....taking the flaw of many RPGs that give all day when they call something urgent. Its like doing Yuffies quest in FFVII while chasing Sephiroth.

No I like ME1, but I recognize that it has some MAJOR flaws, many to do with the flaws of the old Bioware formula.

See, I was under the impression that EA/BioWare were capable of professional quality.
If I had done the same in TV/Film, my career would have ended.

Don't settle for mediocrity.

I bet you couldn't do better...armchair developer.

I'm a retired television producer/director ...
... and I did do better.

But ME3 has some of these same flaws does it not? I mean forget the ending for a minute isn't the face import glitch kind of important? the sidequests consist of planet scan fetch quests. I like Mass Effect 3 as a game it's a fun shooter. However RPG games don't really have a sense of urgency because they are primarily built on sidequests which ME3 does fail in.

ME3 does have flaws....and I have called for the ending to be tweaked, which Bioware is doing.

Planet scan fetch quests were better than the mineral mining...not ideal...but they take 30 minutes total to do, unlike the Mako stuff from ME1. Blow out of proportion.

ME3 does have urgency in side quests...Grissom Academy for example.

The first Fallout had urgency, just because  its an RPG doesn't mean its excused.

fine....because before curing the genophage or going to the cronus station I wipe the galaxy of assets and items and turn them all in.

Minor inconvience blown out of proportion.

And I have been around where RPGs did NOT have quest logs, be thankful.

Not excused no But urgency is more for shooters then RPG's. Imo RPG's are about character interaction and the world around them now ME3 didn't need that many sidequests however some crew sidequests would have been nice. All games have their flaws so when people point them out you can't become so defensive about it.

you know honestly I hate the word suck. Using the word suck to describe something is bad, just makes the person seem pretty stupid!

I see it especially with young gamers with lack of education. It really describes their mental state, that they failed at being human beings that should be intelligent?

I hate when gamers can not find another word other than word suck to describe a terrible ending or game. Yet the internet and forums of gamers seem to plagiarize the word suck, when it should be used to describe an infant sucking on it mothers breast!

Actually the crew has main quests, even better.

Liara has a couple...Thessia and Eden Prime, recommended for the Leuss Monastary. Tali has two. Garrus has one but he is recommended to bring on Tarquin Victus's quests. EDI has Cerebrus HQ. Ashley/Kaiden have Mars etc.

Nevermind there are 4 sidequests with ME2 crewmates.

I am not defensive...I am calling people out on double standards.

For me it goes Me2 > Me1 > Me3.

Mass Effect 2 was my favorite because it had my favorite squad, and it really fleshed out the ME universe. I thought they did a good job setting up the universe in Me1, but this mostly came from dialogue and codex entries. As much as I love Me1, the majority of the environments felt bland and copy-pasted. Also, the "hub" worlds (mainly citadel and noveria) still felt kind of empty and sterile. In Me2, everything really felt fleshed out. I thought they did a fantastic job in creating different worlds (especially Illium, Tuchanka, and Omega). I also thought it was a great idea to have loyalty quests for each squadmate. This forced players to learn about every person on the ship, and it really made you care for them by the time the suicide mission rolled around. I thought the main collector plot of ME2 was kind of weak, but the quality of the loyalty quests made up for it.

It was awesome how bad dialogue choices could instantly end the game for you. Oops I sold out the location of Vault 13? guess I instantly lose lol

In Ultima V, if you take too long, you lose and Lord British dies. This was before Fallout.

And Final Fantasy VI is another RPG that did urgency well.....by not having sidequests during sequences of plot urgency. They mostly came in the not so urgent second half of the game.

I think the collector plot was pretty weak, but the recruitment/loyalty missions were fantastic.  I also think ME2 has the best and most diverse settings.  ME1 felt too sterile and copy/pasted, while Me3 felt like nothing but shooting galleries (with the exception of the citadel, which was awesome).  Me2 had great locations.  I also think the Me2 was the best in the series at giving you choices and making them matter.  The suicide mission was so gripping for me because I knew anyone could potentially die, even shepard.

Still, the human reaper was idiotic in my opinion.  It really felt like they just needed something big to fight as a final boss.

ME3, in my view, was nothing but a thinly disguised corridor-shooter, dumbed down to appeal to the Gears of War/CoD crowd, evident by the emphasis on combat and the regular auto-dialogue (because picking dialogue options would be too dull for the typical 12 year-old CoD kiddie). The character interactions were good, as they were in ME2, but so many other things had been cut right down. The half-assed side-missions, obtained from eavesdropping on other people's business rather than having a proper conversation just reeked of laziness.

I blame EA and harsh schedulees. That and Bioware's need to appeal to the "shooter crowd".
