What exactly do rings that have +5(insert damage type here) do?

I thought they added an extra attack to melee weapons but I found out they don't.  Runes add the little extra to the weapons.  Then I thought they might  beef up the mages staff attack.  They don't.  So, I guess what they actually do is add +x amount of damage to a spell that is of the same element?

So if you have rings that add + fire damage and gauntlets that add + fire damage you are better off using spells that do fire damage?

Am I right about this.  If not please explain, thanks.Posted Image

You are right when you say wearing a Fire ring will add to the damage of a Fire spell.

I know I had Morrigan wear all +x% to cold damage gear I could find, and her cold attacks were devastating.

That rewards specialized mages that will take all spells from one school of magic. (Not so much for elementary damage, but for nature damage, or spirit damage)

OP needs to read more carefully. It's +%. +100% of zero remains zero.

I'm fairly sure it modified weapon runes though, hm.
