I've been trying to figure these out since I started DAO to no avail. I'm sure it's been discussed before, and I did find this post from a year ago, but it's for DA2 and a bit... inconclusive. I also found this good dragonagewiki article, but, despite how complete the chart is, it doesn't explain the categories. This is their chart:

OK- "Friendly Fire" I get- whether you can hurt companions/ self with your spells, grenades, etc.

I'm assuming "flat" offense, defense, damage means whether you're granted an arbitrary bonus (or penalty, though there seems none) to such things.

"Healing effects multiplier" means that whatever HP you get from receiving a healing spell or drinking a poultice, that amount is multipled by the value? OK, probably got that.

"Damage Threshold..." No idea.

"Enemy/ Player resist bonus" must just mean across-the-board resistance bonus/ penalties given to enemies on anything involving a resistance- so maybe affecting all damage reduction, saving throws?

"Potion cap..." No idea. Can't use potions on Nightmare and only 8 on Hard? Can't be.

"Trap damage multiplier..." Easy enough, though I have to wonder if it's applying to both player and enemy traps.

And to what do the AI settings refer- tactical settings? I can sort of imagine that one, but I wasn't aware that the AI of Hard would be the same as Nightmare.  Somehow I suspected Nightmare AI would auto-target my mage and archer like I do...

But that chart isn't complete, is it? This is what is stated on the second page of the DA2 thread mentioned earlier:

Teclo wrote...
You bleed health when under 10%
Friendly fire
Assassins can steal certain items from you
Physical force and elemental force in enemy attacks is increased
Commanders can direct concentrated assaults
Enemies do more damage and have more health
Most enemies are immune to at least one element

Is some of that just bunk or is it all true? Or maybe it's only true for DA2 That doesn't sound like the dragonagewiki chart exactly- not with the bleeding under 10% of HP or assassins stealing from you. If they steal, can you get it back from their inventory once they're dead? The chart also doesn't mention extra enemy HP or arbitrary elemental immunity. And what does "commanders directing concentrated assaults" mean? I met a darkspawn strategist at Ostagar on Hard, but somehow that doesn't sound like a difficulty setting add-in.

Then there's this thread which introduces a further possibility of loot drops being affected by difficulty level... Sheesh.

Maybe there's a more definitive guide to what the difficulty setting involve elsewhere than I've found, but for sure the game manual says less than anything else...

The chart is obviously for DAO why do you say DA2?

The chart is for DAO- pretty obvious by just checking the link I included. The reason I mention the thread for DA2 is lack of other information. Perhaps they're such different games that there is no parity, but I've not located a thread that outlines DAO... Thanks for the help!

IIRC, there is only friendly fire on Nightmare in DA2, right? So right there is a major change in the difficulty scaling attributes.

I wouldn't assume that what's true for DA2 is true for DAO at all. Different combat systems emphasizing different aspects of play probably call for different ways to scale them.

Oh, sod it! (as Oghren would say) Forget I mentioned DA2. I was just trying to figure out DAO's difficulty settings, a la the chart in the first post, particularly the difference between Hard and Nightmare. The DAWiki is usually fairly thorough, and it's a great chart, but they didn't explain the categories, and I'm having difficulty just deciphering them.
