I like how it took around 2 years between Ostagar and the attack on Denerim. Such a gigantic threat. They took out Lothering and Arl Wulfe's lands in that time. Woe to us all.

It was two years?!

He's referring to an offhand comment made by one of the devs in the "Making of" featurette that the events of the game might take "one year, maybe two" depending on what you do. They don't specify that it's between Ostagar and Denerim, IIRC.

yeah all the baddies really needed a lot of development.

There was a line that Brankas lover said about the Darkspawn (paraphrasing) "They hate us because they come from us" in referring to how they are born.

Should have focused a lot more on that. If Loghain was completely nuts and Howe was manipulating him...etc.etc.

I hated Branka more than I did Loghain or the archdemon. By the time I finished with the broodmother, I wanted to break open the anvil with Branka's face. Then she made me run through traps while she ranted about something or another.

In fact, Branka was the best baddie in the game.

indeed that whole level felt like a cesspit that i wanted to get out of immediately

Branka is easily that, especially since her sick logic is actually logical. Thats partly whats disturbing about it.

And the whole idea of the Darkspawn being the ugly children who can't escape their sin.. felt much more poignant than "we must stop the evillies" deal.  And I definitely felt that more in the BroodMother area.

It didn't feel like "go team! kill those darkspawn!". It felt more like a sick game and the darkspawn were just pawns (especially with Branka leering overhead).  Which I liked thematically

Besides being being completely awesome the game lacks a real charismatic bad guy.
Loghain doesn't help either because he only has like 5 scenes in the whole game.

The Architech will answer your call :)

Jon Irenicus,Malik,Saren all had small roles in the actual game when you think about it.

Should have gotten to return to Lothering. Alas first time it went away I looked at my map and was like 'geez, that's it?'

I honestly didn't feel any real emotion towards the darkspawn, mainly because they're just a mindless horde of orc/zombie things. It would of had been different if there would of at least been some darkspawn that were intelligent, spoke, and knew the difference between right and wrong, but to me they had the same impact as like a natural disaster or a pack of wild animals. They're dangerous and need to be stopped, but they're not really evil since all they can do is what their instinct tells them. Even while the brood mother sequence was pretty disturbing, I still didn't find my self getting riled up, because again the darkspawn didn't make the conscious decision to create brood mother, it was their instincts telling them too.

Maybe temporarily, but if you look at the big picture there is no way the dwarves would ever defeat the darkspawn without an advantage like the golems.  If Bhelen pushes them back without the anvil (haven't gotten that ending myself yet) it's only because they were weakened by the defeat on the surface.
In the end it's a war of attrition and the darkspawn are growing while the dwarves are shrinking.  Even if every dwarf warrior took out a hundred darkspawn before he died, or probably even a thousand, they'd still lose in the longrun out of pure attrition unless some other factor came into play.

No, you really need to get the Bhelen ending to understand how wrong you are. He allows everyone, even the casteless/surface dwarves, to enlist as soldiers in the army, giving the dwarves are far larger pool of manpower. Think about it: before, you only had two small castes, the noble and warrior castes, fighting darkspawn. They did pretty well, no? Now increase that by several fold.

It is also stated that the dwarven kingdom enters into an age of prosperity. Prosperity sounds pretty, you know, prosperous.

Either you side with Caridin and destroy the most powerful weapon against the darkspawn that has ever been invented, or you side with Branka and hand it to her.  There's no reasonable in-between option to keep the anvil but not give it to Branka either, cause she's way over the edge.

The anvil can never be used for good: either Harrowmont uses it for war against the surface, or Branka uses it against the dwarves. She's a looney, plain and simple. I doubt she ever wanted to use it for anything but her own goals, which really don't seem to be the presevation of the dwarves.

Eh, I liked it well enough. It's the first in a series. Fighting with all my friends in that final battle was pretty neat. Loghain I probably didn't hate enough but the plight of my party members within the story (Alistair/Morrigan) gave me enough of an emotional impact. Epic conversations/confrontations can be saved for later games when stuff gets real crazy. This really was just a small skirmish in the grand scheme of things.

I don't think you need to hate an enemy or an army in order to fight against them. A Grey Warden is in a sense duty-bound to fight the Darkspawn and the Archdemon. The enemy with an emotional connection was Loghain for sure, but the Darkspawn were just a threat that needed to be pushed back and dealt with. Sort of like a natural disaster.
