Didn't see any thread dedicated to MMA, so I'm making one.

News:
It's almost here, GSP vs. Diaz.
We also got Carlos Condit vs. Johny Hendricks.

First a very brief history about modern MMA.

In the early 90's a family that specialised in their own version of Jiu-Jitsu, arranged a no holds barred fighting event in Denver, Colorado. The first Ultimate Fighting Championship event, also known as UFC.
The entire event was basically an informercial about how effective Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (better known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ for short)) against other forms of martial arts.
Royce Gracie was selected to fight, because he resembled a more average looking guy, instead of his brother Rickson who was far more accomplished, but also looked far more athletic.
The event was a success as Royce defeated a boxer, submission wrestler and a kickboxer, by taking them down and choking them out.

The UFC started to take off. A short time later in Japan another organisation took off, named PRIDE Fighting Championship, also known as PRIDE FC or simply PRIDE. The Japanese could afford to pay a much higher pay grade than the UFC and soon many fighters around the world fought under the PRIDE banner.

Today: The UFC is now the biggest organisation in MMA, with smaller companies such as Bellator, Dream and Shooto competing against them. The UFC's parent company Zuffa also owns Strikeforce, as well as ECW and even PRIDE. PRIDE, Strikeforce and ECW no longer exist today.

About the fighters.

A lot of people falsely think that MMA is just two guys hugging each other, this is not true, but it does happen when one of the fighter is a wrestler.
We're not talking about small amateur fighters here, that compete in barnshows, but actual elite level athletes.

One fighter, like Lyoto Machida, is basically a living version of Ryu of Street Fighter. Having trained Karate at the age of 3 under his father, Shinzo Machida, a Karate master of his own rights.

Then you have fighters like Dan Henderson and Daniel Cormier, who competed in wrestling at the Olympics.

If you watch MMA, these are the fighters you should know and pay somewhat attention to.

B.J. Penn, a fighter correctly named the Prodigy for getting his black belt in BJJ in almost record time (Getting a black belt in BJJ requires serious training and dedication.) as well as fighting in weight classes above (he's quite a small man).

Anderson Silva, the current long reigning UFC middleweight champion. This guy is almost like a black Bruce Lee, his speed and reactions are incredible, and despite looking skinny his striking is lethal. Very rarely does any of his fights go to a decision. Considered to be one of the greatest of all time in MMA.

Georges St-Pierre, the current reingning UFC welterweight champion. A high degree black belt in Karate, as well as a black in BJJ and very effective wrestling. Though his fights lately has gone to decisions, none of them was fights were he looked out of his depths. A master in controlling his opponent and make them fight his fight.

Fedor Emelianenko, like Anderson Silva, he's considered to be one of the greatest of all time, and the greatest of all time heavyweight. If you saw this guy in the street, you'd think he's just your average day mechanic or something. Slightly chubby, but man does he fight.
Went undefeated in almost 10 years. A high degree black belt in Judo and Combat Sambo.

Other fighters, that I'm too lazy to write about now.

I only really check in for Pierre's fights. No one else has really impressed me as an athlete from what I've seen. I do know Overeem though, interesting that he was "medicating." Did they confirm it was anabolic?

Still waiting for the results of his blood test it seems. All the other fighters (Junior Dos Santos, Cain Velasquez, Fabricio Werdum, Roy Nelson, Frank Mir, Antonio Silva) tested negative.

Going to bed, I'll write a more extensive post (edit of the first post) about MMA and the organisations for those that don't know much about MMA and are curious about it.

Yeah, sounds like he was medicating if that's the case. It's a shame since MMA is still somewhat new as a sport, this could be a career ender.

-I pick Dos Santos to win over roid boy Overeem ( damn, I typed that without even knowing Overeem got nailed)

-Rousey, despite her lack of standup will still beat Sara Kaufman with her monster Judo skills.

-I pick Jon Jones over Evans.

I don't really know much about MMA, and it does seem to be a bit of a rough or "dirty" sport to me, but I have enjoyed Emalinenko and Lyoto Machida's fights. The Russian has some real fighting spirit in him, and yet he doesn't seem to be arrogant. The same with Machida - only that him I favor for his Karate-based style more than anything else. A smart and honorable way of fighting, really.

MMA is fail imo, 90% of the time it results in grappling for all intents and purposes which is pretty wrong fundamentally...I prefer boxing since its a stand up slug-fest.

Unless they were to fight to the death a-la gladiator style, I will never see the appeal of MMA.

The majority of these fighters come from Judo, and others pick it up too, therefore most fights wind up on the floor.

Isn't the most popular style (brazilian) jiu-jitsu? And the second most popular some form of muay thai?

But everyone dips into judo for grappling. BJJ is popular, but the application of that is mostly for evasion and moving strikes not for contact fighting like Muay Thai.

MMA is meant to be a hybrid sport. The best like Pierre, Jones, and Fedor aren't concerned with specific technique or form as much as they are with switching techniques as the match calls for it. It's the way they blend disciplines that makes them superb athletes. I grew up on boxing and love it. But MMA can be far more dynamic and is more complex.

As for the most useful martial arts for MMA, I would say:

-boxing
-wrestliing, especially Greco Roman
-Jui-Jitsu
-Muay Thai, which in my opinion is the most effective stricking art form ever devised.
-Judo

Ok, I've added a more detailed update. Would still appreciate if someone could tell me how to add spoiler tags.

God damn, Overeem, why start this now? He's the most tested MMA fighter in the history of the sport and has always come back clean and now this.

I was sooooooooooo looking forward for to him and JDS.

=(

Jones. Rashad is good, but Jones can improvise with the best.

Gustafson is showing fast progression and he's real big. A couple more wins might see him in against the champ.

Brian Stann was pretty impressive. Dude has the biggest jaw I've even seen.

Also, a special shout out to Benson H. That guy schooled Edgar, period. He's real slick.

Jones vs Rashad seemed to be a boring fight. No surprise there. Jones is a killing machine with his unorthodox fighting.
The best match I've seen with him is the one with Machida. Twas' sad though - and I really didn't like the end of it. Exciting nontheless.
Brought to you by Battlefield 3. :)

It was unremarkable. My take away is that a tall and active striker will give Jones trouble.

I prefer boxing since its a stand up slug-fest.

Hell yea.  Too bad it's crap compared to how it was in the 70's/80's and even 90's. (to a lesser degree)

UFC seems like it's already going downhill. I see the same people fighting over and over. Does everyone have to fight Rampage Jackson and all the other older fighters? I'm sick of seeing the same people.

I miss boxing at its finest with Erik "El Terrible" Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera. I never was into the heavweights since all the Mexicans box at feather up to welter. I want to see Pacquiao--Marquez IV after that crappy decision for Pacquiao.

What's this? The typical American hug fest? You should watch K1 matches! Then again, I might be biased because I'm Dutch.

Check the gif at the bottom of the first post. Far more exciting than K-1 and I used to watch a lot of K-1.
