 It's funny, when I first played ME3 and talked to Cortez and he mentioned his husband (before the crying scene) my initial reaction was "oh, he's gay. That's cool."

After the crying scene I thought "ah, poor dude. Lost his husband, life sucks sometimes."

As you keep talking to him and have the scene on the viewing platform on the citadel I started thinking "ah crap, he's going to come onto me, and get mad if I don't want to romance him, but I don't want to be a dick to the guy..."

Then you get to the bar scene, and he mentions the eye-candy and you see that other dude looking at him/us. I told him "I'm fine with the eye-candy on the stage" or something, and his reaction was a light laugh and to say "good, I wouldn't want you as competition anyway," then we had our toast to each other (as friends) and I thought "RIGHT ON STEVE!" I wanted to give him a bro-hug.

Steve became one of my favorite characters in the game after that. It seems silly, but good writing can make a difference. I thought I was going to get "Andersed" (you know what I mean) and it would be awkward and I'd feel like a dick for being mean, or turning him down, but Bioware did a good job of avoiding that this time.
