Its actually reallly fun. That being said i'm not sure why we would be forced to play MP to increase assets. If I had Xbox Live gold I would be playing it still. My only guess is if the did do this (and shame on them if they did) that it has something to do with the whole used games debate.

April 9th – PC
April 10th – Xbox and PS3
Fixed issues when in some cases Shepard’s customized facial features from ME1/ME2 may not be properly imported to ME3
Fixed an issue when quickly and repeatedly selecting to Resume a Save could result in Player Level reset and a potential locking of powers.
Fixed an issue when selecting Multiplayer in the Main Menu while under a poor network connection could result in an unresponsive state.
Fixed a potential crash while accessing an in-game terminal from Eden Prime level.
Fixed an issue when attempting to login while Server is down. It would display a Server Down message and accepting the Server Shutdown message would shut down the game.
Fixed a potential memory crash while loading a Quick Save of a custom FemShep.
Fixed an issue when restarting missions and acquiring an above max amount of weapon mods results in displayed debug text on-screen.
Fixed an issue when an unresponsive game state could occur during transition after the Conduit level.
Fixed an issue when DLC game saves can be accessed from an account without DLC if another account on the same computer has access to the related DLC. (PC Only)
Fixed an issue when saves from different accounts on the same computer may become locked if one account has access to DLC which the other account does not. (PC Only)
Fixed an issue when potentially the game could enter unresponsive state when transitioning from the Holding Docks area to the Normandy Docks area of the Citadel. (PS3 Only)
Nothing about War Assets. So no fix for a while or if ever.

I was lucky to have played MP before I beat the game, but that was only because I tried it in the demo and was pleasantly surprised. I originally planned to not touch it until AFTER my first completionist playthrough, BASED ON WHAT WE WERE TOLD.
Ending issues aside, even the 'best' endings, there is a clear disconnect here.
What they are telling us isn't true in our experience and research.
Again, I don't think they would lie on purpose. (let's not bring up those pre-release interviews, ugh)
So something must be really wrong here.
BTW, great find on those War Assets giving credits and not actually War Assets toward EMS!

Still.... all it would have taken was one brave person to stand up and have their voice heard.

Also, something else I just considered.... what happens when the MP servers are eventually shut down?
If you want to re-play the game... or are really late to the party and play it for the first time.... now the 'best' endings are completely locked for you. No way to get them.

I found it to be a pretty positive response, all things considered.
I have asked him if I can re-post his reply here in full, but I won't do that until I have his permission.
Short Version: He's personally looking into it in his own time over the next couple weeks.
If he finds something, then he will post in one of our threads about it.
Also something noteworthy... he seemed to indicate that a certain special TIM related dialogue choice (we all know what this is) actually ADDS 1000 EMS to your final total.
This means that he was counting it on top of his normal war assets when he said 5000 EMS.
So 4000 EMS PLUS suceeding at that particular plot point is the magic threshold to beat.
I just want to personally thank Thomas Abram for responding, especially on his own time and on the holiday weekend. After the lack of communication it is a breath of fresh air and does make me feel a little more hopeful.
I'll post his exact reply if and when I get his permission. I'll also post my response.

An extra 1000 (or 500) would take me over the limit. But is this a reward for the renegade action with TIM or earlier. Aaah. Very intriguing.
I look forward to seeing the reply. This is a positive development. Hopefully this will be all sorted very soon.

Sorry for the tease... just a thing with me about PMs. I don't see why he would mind everyone else seeing his response, as personally I thought it was a good one that also didn't take any sides.... but I'll respect his decision if he doesn't want me to.
The meat is... he replied, it was pretty good, and he's a hell of a guy for doing it all on his time off (during holidays no less!)
Respect +1 for Thomas Abram regarding this.
If what he's saying about that final 1000 EMS is what I think it is, then we aren't missing the HUGE amount of war assets we thought. Perhaps in the range of 500 - 1000, as you mentioned (though that would still makes things pretty tight).
Still..... much better than the 2000-3000 I originally thought.
Essentially the 5000 EMS before the final TIM scene would be impossible no matter what. You need to have 4000 EMS before then, and succeed at that particular exchange (no spoilers).
However, I did ask for some clarification in my response, so we'll see if maybe I'm way off base, lol

any assets with numbers like that ^^^^ arent war assets, those are objects that are part of the fetch quests (rings of selune, obelisk of kazra, etc) dunno why they have high initial strengths......
also, some of the assets have 0 initial strenght, but if u look at them a bit carefully, they modify existing assets with negative or positive values
