Like many of you, after finishing Mass Effect 3 I've turned to the internet to discuss the storyline and see what other people think of the game. I really did not like the ending at all.... until I stumbled onto this analysis. The author does a really good job of explaining the themes of the storyline and why the ending fits with those themes. As much as I hated the ending before, since reading that post I did a replay of the game and came away with a much better feeling. Sorry for not posting the full text but it's extremely long and I did not write it so a link will have to do.

So were the massive plot holes put in on purpose?

No. There is a tremendous amount of ****** in there.

Hmm I don't agree. The very fact that I would need to read some analysis to enjoy or understand the ending (which I still think is so full of holes it's not funny) just makes it all the more apparent how poorly done it was.

"I have a degree..." aka "Because I have a piece of paper, I know better than any of you, and my opinion is right. My **** doesn't stink and my ****** smells like perfume and you should all bow before my intelligence and hope you are all one day as great as I am."

Also, here is an excellent video about why exactly the ending fails so badly. www.youtube.com/watch

The problem lays with the presentation, not the theme of the ending.

The lengths people are going to in order to rationalize or make sense of this mess gets more absurd by the day. How come people can't just accept the fact that it was rushed and poorly written.

"I am an artiste! I appreciate this great work of art unlike you philistines!"

Condescension and art snobbery was laced throughout that entire thing.

The ending is a betrayal of the themes presented throughout the trilogy.

Let's count 'em, shall we?

Free will.
Overcoming overwhelming odds in the face of adversity.
Unity through putting aside past differences.
Equality.

That's four off the top of my head. There are more, but I think this serves to get the point across.

EDIT: Oh, and Choice.

If you feel the need to state your credentials before giving an opinion, it means you know the opinion has no merit on its own.

From the start of his analysis he admits that the cutscene was poorly done and does not show the outcome of our decision which is a major gripe. He also tries to say that most people are upset because it is not a "happy" ending which is not accurate.

Because if you can convince yourself you liked it, you can convince yourself that everybody who doesn't like it just doesn't understand it and hence you are smarter.

Not really worth the read. He argues that no one was ready for Shepard to die, as if that is what we meant by tonal shift.

Second, he admits entropy wasn't focused on until the last game, then says synthesis is okay because rape>death. Literally, he says Synthesis is rape if you don't accept entropy, but if you do accept entropy, you know that the only other option would be death. Therefore rape>death.

I stopped reading after that.

@Velocithon I stopped at "you have to understand the whole theme of the series".Oh ya? what theme? In the last 5 minutes we were introduced to a character we never even met and have no idea if our choices did matter, for all we know everyone could be dead, lets not forget I'm not a fan of a goddamn Adam and Even ending, this is a sci fi series not goddamn religion.

"Mass Effect 3: Great Ending or Greatest Ending" Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they just a rehash of Deus Ex's endings? Or so I've heard. If so he should give credit where it's due.

Man, i wish I wasn't a peasant so I could grasp all of that. Here I was thinking that not breaking the narrative flow was a good thing and plot holes were bad.
