My first run of ME 3 was Hardcore, and my squad didn't die -too- often except towards the end, but playing ME 2 on Hardcore I notice they go down faster than a Volus with Athesma during a triathalon.
Can I expect the same with an ME 3 Insanity Run?
Insanity question: Squad mates on their backs more often than The Consort?

My squad didn't die much till the end of the game really, it was just the reaper forces that gave them problems on insanity for me. But it might depend on the class, I was a soldier and I generally kept my squad back behind me

Squadmates are tougher and more capable in ME3. Unless you let them fight most of the fight for you, they dont die easy.
My squad in ME3 died less the entire playthrough then my squad in ME2 could in just a few missions

Yeah, the only character that died most often was Liara - for obvious reasons. She has the lowest health by far. Otherwise, they're a lot more beefy. Plus, some of them have defensive powers that help.

I imported a character and started an insanity run on my first go. I used Liara and Garrus most of the time, and found myself using very little medigel. In other words, go for it, the teammates are very capable as long as you don't drop them in front of an Atlas or something.

My first ME3 run was on Insanity with a Vanguard. Just do it. It's awesome. Not frustrating like ME2.

Lol, thread title made me snort.
And I think the consort enjoys being on top.

First playthrough was also an Insanity Vanguard, James doesn't actually like dying, and Kaidan is no slouch either.

Insanity runs are easy if you got highly upgraded weapons.
Liara is the only squadmate you have to babysit around. The rest are pretty beefy

Liara needs the most attention, not only is she easy to kill but for whatever reason she seems to be the dumbest. Many fights I would see Garrus hunkered down behind cover popping out to take shots while Liara was charging the enemy. Really was ridiculous!

It's funny because for me, liara and garrus dropped like flies and I almost always took them with me. I carefully built them and everything, but they just kept dying.

So far I've made it to the Tuchanka missions without a death on the team.
Much better than ME2, where I couldn't get through Freedom's Progress (largely due to the two points where you suddenly get pushed into the fight with no cover and no opportunity to set up).

I've found the teammate AI to be good, except when it's not. Against ravagers or Cerberus turrets, they don't know that the enemy does too much damage too quickly for you to stand in the open until your shields fail and only then try to take cover. Against husks and brutes, they don't know that you need to keep moving away from the enemy. Most other situations aren't too bad, though.
Of course, this is nothing new. In ME2, 90+% of teammate deaths were caused by rocket launchers/heavy attacks. The AI just didn't understand that tanking shots then taking cover doesn't work if the shots knock you out of said cover.

With Liara give her rank 4 bonus health and shields over the cooldowns, brings her health and shields almost the same as the next lowest of abouts 1000, up from low 800s.

It might also be due to the weapons you're arming them with. In ME2, I always gave squadmates weapons with short bursts so they'd forced to go behind cover between shots. I'm fairly certain that if you give Liara something like a Tempest, she'd just fire until the clip ran out.

Funny alot of people say Liara which by looking at her health is true but the only teammate that gave me trouble was Javik and it wasn't his fault. He just kept getting grabbed by banshees at the end game in London.
Maybe because I was active in constantly Crowd controling but she rarely went down.
My experience on insanity.

Thats a mistake. Her best defense is it if enemies are constantly flying in the air. No amount of health would prevent any squadmate to not dy against brutes or banshees anyway. So a 2 second cooldown for singularity is the way to go.
And actually i had to watch vega and others went down far more often then liara.

Squadmatet don't die more often than they did in ME2. Take the initiative and they will be fine. If they die all the time it's you who's doing it wrong.

Ravagers...
It's like the only enemy that kills my squad, they never get into cover in time and that cannon takes them out easy. Other then that, the london mission, which is fine though since at that point they are just cannon fodder until you get that missile working.

I think there is a range associated with the weapon. Or maybe it is biotic casting range. I've noticed if I select a target Garrus will take cover near me but Liara will move forward. I was going to try switching her to heavy pistol to see if that helps.

I am not 100% sure but I do believe the weapon equiped affects squad mate AI. Yesterday, I started using Tali and she kept going out in the open to engage with her shotgun. I even saw her trying to shotgun a turret.
I ran with Garrus (always), EDI and Liara for my first playthrough as a soldier. EDI and Liara (especially Liara) died a lot. Medigel is plentiful so I never bothered to babysit or specificially place the squad. If I was relying on Liara for detonation priming, I would equip the heavy pistol and position her more.
In my first run, Garrus was usually only killed when forced out of cover (e.g. by Brutes) or by Ravagers. Ravagers are priority targets.

Yeah, Liara is pretty much the one who's most likely to die. Only needed her for singularity, until I recruited Javik that is.
