Not sure if serious, or just that stupid.

We aren't talking about a "testable" science here, or are you really that daft to compare souls to mountains?

Could you say "no" to Legion? :o

Easily.

In ME2 Mordin said that the Collectors' souls were replaced by tech. So, having a soul seems to mean being fully sentient in Mass Effect.

Not that this would make any sense across all species.

It's on par with the random gibberish about "the essence of a species".

It may be gibberish to you, sorry, but this is what's established in the game.

And if it means what you think it means, then it's flat out insulting. And if it means what I think it means, it's an allegory to culture, to being. To being alive. You can use that word without drawing on the "essence of life" connotation.

As for the actual gibberish regarding "essence of life" and anything related to synthesis or its explanation (or the ending in general), that is just bad writing. No getting past it. It's really, really bad.

I'm not sure what insulted you.

Legion doesn't have a soul. Nor does anyone else. Durrhurr.

But Geth are people, too. Flesh doesn't have some mystical, inherent quality that makes it a worthier building material for living beings than metal.

No I don't. I don't believe in it. It's nonsense. Consciousness comes from the brain. Consciousness is identity, but it doesn't survive past death.

The closest I'm willing to go is the Quantum afterlife theory by Dr. Stuart Hameroff.

I believe that life is more than just the physical aspect of it...life is a very abstract reality and to think that what we see physically is all life has to offer is simply short-sightedness. Said in my legion voice :innocent:

No, the Geth don't have souls. Then again neither do the Quarians.

Just... No. I can't even come up with a witty repartee for this.

A 'soul' is an abstract concept, so there's nothing stopping this unit from having one if he believes he should.

Or the humans, Turians and Asari. No one has a soul, but Geth aren't living beings, they're just machines.

Humans, Turians and Asari are also just machines.  The only difference is that those  Human, Turian and Asari  machines are based on the chemestry of carbon, while the Geth machines (and EDI) are based on the physics of silicon.

Humans, Quarians, Turians etc are natural. Synthetics aren't natural, they're artificial like cars, computers and toasters and I wouldn't call those things living beings.

If by "natural", you mean wholly accidental, then sure. Only flaw with that is that arbitrarily distinguishing "natural" from "artificial" with no meaningful parameters is inherently racist. The only difference between something that's "natural" and "artificial" is that something that is artificial is created with a purpose in mind. Every other distinction is man-made and holds no objective value.

In what way is a synthetic, who is fully capable of independent thought, forming opinions, and forming personal relationships "not a person"? Because their brains consist of silicon-based circuitry instead of highly fragile neurons? I'm fully awaiting a non-biased, grounded answer.

Miranda is artifical, too. After all, she's a product of genetic engineering. Does that mean she doesn't count as a living being?

I say, Mother Nature sure does shoddy design. Updates are horribly slow and you never get them in your lifetime.

And I mean no offense, but I think that that is just wishful thinking.  There's nothing supernatural or divine about life. It's a cosmic accident. There is no intrinsic meaning or purpose.

But we're here now. We kind of like being alive. We are the Universe made aware. We don't have a purpose, or a path, or a destination, so it's up to each of us to build our own.

You know, I don't get why Legion even asked this question. The Geth who asked it was part of the older, less developed consciousness. They must have advanced far enough to understand more about the concept of the soul and to know that there's no proof that anything, organic or otherwise, has them. As beings of pure logic they should know that it's just an idea formed by people pondering the nature of themselves.

I mean, I guess it was poetic and nice enough and whatever...

If you say so...but throughout history and even today unexplained super natural phenomenon happens all the time and whatever scientists can't explain physically gets thrown under a rug and ignored :alien: but it does happen
