After
playing all the games i came to one conclusion: The citadels interior
get better and better, and i always stay longer there, just to see
everything. Also the club's have a very large potential to be more than a
static room, so i came up with a kind of weird idea:
Web has
evolved in the last years, We have HTML5 with native audio and video
support. Also most browsers (not internet explorer) have WebGL which
allow fully 3d environments inside of your website.
Just a proof of possible graphics: http://helloracer.com/webgl/ or http://lights.elliegoulding.com/
So why not put something together as a fan project?
-
First off i will split it up into several steps, so people could reply
if they want to see such a project in the future, and which dimensions
they would like it to have.
Step1:
A virtual Showoff of the
citadel. Imagine the citadel as a large 3d map, where you can fly
through. Fans can keep building on new parts, vote for them in the
forums, and if they get accepted, they get added to the citadel
"model-map".
Its in this stage some kind of museum and also a in my opinion large contribution project for fans all around the world.
Step2:
This
idea can ofcourse be spinned further. You could eventualy create a
virtual avatar and walk around the citadel. Basicaly this would be the
same as having the free-fly camera, however its easy to implement new
features like WebSockets, to allow people to see each other walking
around. If it gets that far we can also move on to step 3:
-- This is were we move from the museum idea to something interactively, and may get heavy critic --
Step3:
You
can actualy implement online radio stations in the clubs, or let radio
stations make their own clubs. There is a bunch you could add to game
dynamic. It would be like an awesome large 3d-chat applicaiton, where
you can hangout, or do something more than simply "chat".
Step4:
People
could make their private rooms, as soon as the citadel has more places,
where people can send mails to eachother, visit eachother (means you
cant read their chat or hear their voice, when you implement voicechat),
or do other crazy stuff. The project can be paid easy, because its
possible to add real advertisements instead of the mass effect dummy
ones on screens etc.
This sounds crazy, yes of course.
Do i realy think the idea would be a success? dont know, thats why i write this post here.
What about EA? Of course they will get asked for permission before anything will be started.
We
have secondLife, Imvu... Why another 3d Chat? Well, we dont need that
feature, it depends on how the feedback gets. But nobody would deny the
idea of a citadel museum. If anyone would put such a thing up, people
would like it or not visit it, so.. why not? I just added the other
ideas for the feedback, and to give some possible examples.
At last the big question, or sentence which i always hear:
Thats
not possible! ... Well.. it is
also wrote some nice WebGL applications. (but im not a 3d modeler) Of
course it wont have the same quality as the original game has (maybe in
the future when WebGL performance is a lot higher) The main problems
would be the polycount, so lod has to be used, and only the room you are
currently in will be loaded fully. (Or inteligent polygon streaming,
where the server sends the cllient only polygons they should see, but
this "could" be some larger traffic, which can then ofcourse be grouped
into polygon groups etc.. but thats technical discussion which has to be
made if this project would start) So all we would actualy need at first
is:
- some map parts modeled, and saved in a readable format
- streaming the map parts to the client(s), and a simple camera movement and collision detector.
- Doors which open when you are near them have to be scripted of course, but thats easy.
You always see people who create paintings or high quality renders of stuff they like, so why not doing something together?
Im quite interested in what people will say about the idea. Feel free to discuss
