Oh, Bioware. You just can't help yourselves, can you? Still being needlessly passive aggressive ("our most passionate fans"; "we stand behind our artistic vision"), still insinuating that those of us unhappy with your ending are just too stupid to understand it ("to provide further clarity and closure"), and still completely missing the point while blaming us for your failure to deliver.

I've said this endlessly since the game dropped, and I'll continue to say it:

No amount of clarity alone will fix this.

None.

No amount of clarity alone will fix the fact that your ending, as it stands, is thematically and tonally divorced from the rest of the series.
No amount of clarity alone will fix that nothing Shepard does in the preceding three games matters at all.
No amount of clarity alone willl fix that Shepard just gladly goes along with ideas that s/he has demonstratively proven false.

Further, you do not get to claim "artistic integrity" and insinuate that it exempts your work from criticism. That's not how this works. If you had made this game solely for yourselves, sure. Stick by your guns. But you didn't. You made it for mass consumption and with the claim that it was made in "collaboration with the fans". That changes the rules. Extensively. (More on that in this lovely article: doycetesterman.com/index.php/2012/03/mass-effect-tolkein-and-your-bullshit-artistic-process/)

So, with all due respect, Bioware? Shove it.

+1

Sums up my thoughts exactly another +1.

Cinematics do nothing. To fix the game you need to resolve the Normandy crash debacle and what happens to Shepard if he picks the Destroy ending. I don't need more clarity about why the Normandy crashed, I need closure, a resolution to the god damn plot.

I want my damn team and LI with me at the end.

Ok, I get it. You LOVE your ending and you aren't going to change it just because your customers and longtime fans don't like it. You don't care how many plotholes, inconsistencies, and elementary narrative mistakes it contains, you aren't going to fix or rewrite anything.

Instead, you are going to add some explanation and closure. You are going to add more exposition to the conclusion of the game.

Hey, it's your art. You don't have to change it. Nobody can make you.

But don't you EVER ask me to buy anything from you again. I'm not downloading your cop-out, ego-boosting, marketing ploy "extended cut". I'm uninstalling all three Mass Effect games right now. I'm canceling my TOR subscription right now. Please check and verify this. I'll have some more feedback for you in the TOR cancellation form.

The next time you release a game, I'm not pre-ordering it. If it turns out to be good, I'll buy it used so you won't get a dime, and I won't buy your DLC.

And I'm encouraging everyone I know to do the same. Enjoy your artistic integrity. I hope you can find a way to spend it.

Is what it will basically come down to. There is no way to logically explain what the hell is going on at the end. Why even both Bioware?

I think its the final straw for me. No more love to give to Bioware and no more money either.

The ending DLC is probably just a 15 minute mpeg of Hudson and Walters snorting cocaine off the meeting room table.

I'm out.

Hey, at least that would provide some clarity.

For all that we've picked apart the PR double speak on this forum, it surprises me that nobody's actually tried dissecting the words 'clarity and closure.'  Nobody can come out and say "our ending was bad" or even "out fans think the ending was bad."  Anyone who says that will end up crucified.  They're trying to fix the problem without actually admitting that there was a problem.

So, yeah, I think this olive branch of theirs might (might) be genuine.  Going to try and keep an open mind.

This is my biggest hope at the moment. Still not that big, but I'll take what I can get.

I wish this were true but as of right now this is not what they have said. In the FAQ about the new DLC they say they are NOT going to change the endings just add clarity. So basically they have lied and misled us this whole time with this whole:

"we value your feedback" and "we are listening" CLEARLY they were NOT.

artistic integrity or vision doesnt mean jack **** here. Im sorry but forbes explained time and time again why that argument is invalid. Bioware just cant face the truth of it so they give us a middle finger with some new cut scenes? Fail bioware fail, watch your sales drop, wave goodbye to your fans./ This is your biggest insult to us. Later

I agree with what Paul Tassi of Forbes, who said this is a win for us, lets see what happen with this DLC and see what happens to it in the end. If it is still crappy as usual, then its over and Bioware is dead to me. If somehow (that's a BIG somehow) they can turn it into a decent ending, then all props to them...but for now, we as the Retake movement NEED to see what Bioware brings out. Rememeber, now Patience is a virtue, we forced EA/Bioware to make a move that they do not want in teh first place (free DLC), now lets see what they give us in the end.

Ya, to recap what he said,

The protesters need to be careful now. If they start saying things like
“I wanted the ending CHANGED not EXPANDED,” they’re going to get slappedwith the “entitled” and “whiny” labels they hate so much. And at this point, I would finally agree with that classification. This is a win forfans and a concession from Bioware, plain and simple.
Because it’s a compromise, and the Retake movement has to understand they were not going to get a page one rewrite. It just simply would not happen. Even if I was Bioware, and I knew I screwed up, I would not completely abandon the ending I did produce. I would try and alter it and expand on it in an effort to give more resolution and closure to the story, which I thought were the main points of what fans wanted. The fact that a protest movement made a company produce FREE DLC is unprecedented, and the fact that fans can’t seem to celebrate this moment as a win is confusing. If they keep protesting at this point, it looks like they can never be satisfied. Even I, covering this for a long time now, am unclear about what would truly satisfy everyone at this point. I don’t think anything can.

That's a really great quote.

It's just a few more cutscenes. It's not a content pack, they would be crazy to not release it for free.

if it's fake fine, big huge tease, but if it's real it better be explained to us.
Also this free DLC ok it's free great, but not what we wanted...just stop tyring to maintain your artistic integrity and stopt he excuses and really jsut flat out sya why you won't change the ending.

That's hilarious. I don't believe that nonsense for a second. It sounds really stupid.
  • For example, storyboards indicate that AsadGrim, Mass Shift's primary (but not final--he joins your team) antagonist does notwear a typical Volus suit. You will be able to see most of his body.
Riiiight. Hysterical. At least it gave me a laugh.

It's apparently free, so I might as well get it. Still, my self promise not to buy any future Bioware products is still in effect unless the Extended Cut actually makes the ending satisfying, which I don't see how it will accomplish if it's apparently not fixing the glaring issues and plot holes.

I can't see how additional cutscenes and an epilogue could properly address the broken and nonsensical ending. Are you listening but not hearing us? Are you more interested in preserving your "artistic vision" than doing the right thing for your fans and customers?

I'm honestly stunned. Stunned and dismayed.

Just got home from work and went to Kotaku and saw the DLC announcement. A real shame for those who wanted a new ending. The destruction of the Mass Relays was what I really found disheartening (not sure using that word in the right context) but that obviously will not be changed now, oh well...

I'll download and check out this new DLC when it is released, and I'll continue to find enjoyment out of the ME series even if the ending was not what I hoped for.

Bioware, I will stand by you even when the whole forum hate you for your work.
When the night has come and the land is dark and the moon is the only light we'll see. No I won't be afraid, no I won't be afraid. Just as long as you stand, stand by me. And darlin', darlin', stand by me, oh now now stand by me. Stand by me. Stand by me.

If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall and the mountains should crumble to the sea, I won't cry, I won't cry, no I won't shed a tear. Just as long as you stand, stand by me.

This was one of the worst endings to one of the best RPG series I've ever played, and unfortunately no ending DLC will fix this.

They can fix this, but they refuse to. What I'm seeing from this so far, they're trying to throw us a bone, but we're humans, we don't want a bone, we want proper options for the ending of an amazing trilogy. We want to feel like all the decisions that we made actually mean something beyond Shepard being able to take a breath at the end of a cinematic. We want the ending of the game to mean something besides anger and disapointment at the creators of the game.

There's still time BioWare, Fix it!

In all honesty, this is all we can ask of BioWare at this point. Granted, not everyone is necessarily okay with an extended ending, but the devs can only do so much. The way I see it they could have completely ignored fans and stuck to the original ending, but they're showing that they still care about our input enough to acknowledge it.

Have a little faith that BioWare won't drop the ball on us again. They're taking a huge step towards making nice with the fans with this DLC, I think they've earned a reservation of judgement.

Bioware: We are releasing an Extended Cut DLC so that we can clarify the endings as well as keep our artistic integrity.

Fans: So you destroy your artistic integrity so you can maintain your artistic integrity? Sounds like this game I just finished playing.

Artistic Integrity

A word I have come to hate over the past month

You google'd a stock image and photo-shopped it in 5 minutes and then pasted it into ME3

You threw all your artistic integrity out the window when you did this.

The game is still anticlimactic, no matter what is clarified.

That's the real shame and failure of it.

Damn I like it finished like this. But I really feel sory for IDT fans. It was a good theory. But just the theory, truth will always win and the real ending IS making sense accept it or not. It won't make sense only to blinded people or ones who did't pay enough attention during ME1, 2 and mainly ME3. No one believed us (minority) and now you see it is not awlays the best idea to stick with mass hysteria.

If 90% of the people who read your story fail to understand your point then it's a failure on your part. I want to believe it's not a story issue and the endings were simply rushed but I would never imply Bioware fans were simply to dumb to understand it. Also, lots of speculations. What I got from ME3 were many interpretations that were radically different but I'm not even sure any of them are correct.
