Don’t understand how specializations work.

I have a point available for this but for the life of me can’t figure it out.  I am guessing that I have to talk to an NPC somewhere within the game.  Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

It depends on the specific specialization, many have different means to unlock.

Can tell you what to do for each of them. If you have a specific one you're looking to unlock, I can probably tell you it myself.

Ranger is learned from a tome you can buy at the party camp.

Yeah thanks for the tip on Wiki... accordingly the book at party camp costs 15-gold.  Wow that seems really expensive.

Thanks again for your help

One tip is that "Unlocked specializations stay unlocked" - this means that if you unlock one specialization in one game, it'll stay unlocked across multiple saves or playthroughs.

That, in turn, means that you can save, buy the book, read it, load the save, and have it both unlocked and keep your money. :)

It's kinda "cheating", but I did it, because I really don't like the fact that it is the only way to unlock ranger. I believe no other specialization will give it to you. How hard would it have been to have one of them Dalish elves teach it to you ?
