An official press release went out today announcing how we are re-prioritizing the Mass Effect 3 post release content schedule to provide a more fleshed out experience for our fans. For many of you the "Extended Cut" will help answer some questions and give closure to this chapter of the Mass Effect story. Oh and it's at no cost to you - the fan.

Here is a mini FAQ to help you understand what the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut is and isn't:

What can fans expect from the Extended Cut DLC?
For fans who want more closure in Mass Effect 3, the DLC will offer extended scenes that provide additional context and deeper insight to the conclusion of Commander Shepard's journey.
Are there going to be more/different endings or ending DLCs in the future?
No. BioWare strongly believes in the team's artistic vision for the end of this arc of the Mass Effect franchise. The extended cut DLC will expand on the existing endings, but no further ending DLC is planned.
What is BioWare adding to the ending with the Extended Cut DLC?
BioWare will expanding on the ending to Mass Effect 3 by creating additional cinematics and epilogue scenes to the existing ending sequences. The goal of these new scenes is to provide additional clarity and closure to Mass Effect 3.
When will the Extended Cut DLC be available?
Currently the Extended Cut DLC is planned for this summer, no specific date has been announced at this point.
Why are you releasing the Extended Cut DLC?
Though we remain committed and are proud of the artistic choices we made in the main game, we are aware that there are some fans who would like more closure to Mass Effect 3. The goal of the DLC is not to provide a new ending to the game, rather to offer fans additional context and answers to the end of Commander Shepard's story.
So there you have it. Are we proud of the game we made and the team that made it? Hell yes. Are we going to change the ending of the game? No. Do we appreciate the passion and listen to the feedback delivered to us by our fans? Very much so and we are responding.

Be good to each other and Summer is coming...

I don't see how this is going to give most of those who were disappointed in the ending what they're actually looking for.  Bioware may be proud of the ending, but the "passionate" fans referenced in the press release are not.  Given that these are the fans to whom, presumably, you're responding, I sincerely doubt that this will do much to improve relations.  Like so many others, I wanted additional endings, for Shepard to be able to object to the last-minute antogonist.  If the Extended Cut does not provide this, it will not satisfy its intended audience.

For the record, I think that Bioware has every right to be proud of the main game.  Most of those protesting at the ending agree.  However, I think that it's possible to make deep mistakes in the art of storytelling, and, when one does that, hiding behind the label of "art" is not a demonstration of integrity.

People may say: why can't you wait and see?  Why not give Bioware a chance?  It's not an entirely unfair response.  It's exactly what I would have said before I experienced the ending of ME3.  I had faith in Bioware then.  But it's very difficult to maintain such faith after having been so deeply disappointed by the ending and having seen no indication that Bioware feel the ending was a mistake.

Bioware, it's not too late to change your minds about this.  You still have months before this DLC is going to be released, months in which to reconsider.  Changing your mind after making a mistake is not a weakness; it's a strength.  If nothing else, ask yourself how likely it is that fans who loved Mass Effect will be interested in any new franchises you create.  If the loving work of years can be squandered in a few minutes, it discourages us from investing in another new world and new characters.  After all, you could just do to them what you've done to Mass Effect with the ending of ME3.  Please, please reconsider.

"We believe in our team's artistic integrity"

There's that word again. I don't think it means what you think it means.

Good to know that it's free.

And I hope it'll settle most of the issues people had with this. You can do this, Bioware!!! :o

That's all well and good, but no amount of "closure" or "clarity" can fill in plot holes. At the core of it, that's what this has always been about. The ending has too much that flat out makes no sense. You can be as proud as you want about something that makes no sense, but it still, at the end of the day, makes no sense.

I don't consider failing to adhere to your own lore to be an "artistic vision".

Standing by something so universally reviled just reeks of hubris, though.  You should have considered humility instead of pride on this one.

Oh well. I'm sure you won't miss my money on every future Bioware release, and all the DLC. One customer means nothing, right?

This does nothing for me and I suspect does nothing for a vast majority. I don't want clarification and closure with extended cutscenes and whatever other garbage they throw together. I want my decisions to frakking matter in the end. They can't explain all of this crap away. All this is, is a means to placate angry fans who say the ending is crap. Which it is.

Bioware... letting EA make this anouncement is horrendous. A PR Fubar to the extreme. I'm sorry... without an ending that actually makes sense and then closure for that ending... a lot of Bioware fans will jump ship and never buy their product again. I include myself in that category.

Without an ending that makes sense and provides closure to so many things left open I predict a mass return or trade in of all Mass Effect games. There will be no point in replaying the games. None at all. I'm sorry... what little faith I had is has now left the building.

As much as i love the previous 99% and bioware itself....

This
response makes me feel like they think we're the slow kid in class, who
needs a better explanation because they think we're stupid.

No. That was not the Hold-the-line community's opinion. We need a DIFFERENT one.

PS:
Oh, and also. Good thing it's free. If you had made it for money I
would have instantly stopped playing and buying anything bioware out of
principle.

It's lovely that this is going to be a free DLC. Best decision IMO. Now let's hope that the content within can please most people.

IT, Bioware, IT! Easiest way out!

Don't brag about the fact that its free when its not even what people wanted.

Although regardless this should this be funny and mind numbingly depressing to see. I would assume you would put some work into it but after the ending and tali's face I highly doubt it.

Well, it sounds like I have a return to make then. This isn't really what most people were looking for and an extended cutscene is unlikely to resolve those issues, issues which deeply affect the feel, playability, and tone of series as a whole.

The ending was entirely inappropriate to the narrative paradigm, character nature, player role, and story buildup. If this is how Bioware wishes to end it, very well, but it will be without many of us to continue with it in the future and with a disappointed feel to a series we cherished up until very recently.

Thank you for the Mass Effect series up until it's conclusion, it was a great ride until then.

I hope you have a damn good explanation as to why Shepard accepts the Starchild's logic and doesn't even attempt to contradict it despite having compelling evidence it's wrong. Because at the moment that just isn't flying.

That sums it up, basically. They're proud of their artistic conclusion, which they clearly regard as an epic, and will not provide additional endings now or in the near future.

Bioware Artistic Team: All your Shepard are belong to us.
Fanbase: Noooo!
Bioware: And now, we shall show you more epic puppeteering that we want to do with Shepard through Free DLC.
Fanbase: Naaaaawh!
