Last post before I walk away and calm down.

Dear Bioware developers,

If you want complete freedom to let your artistic freedom reign supreme, you are in the wrong business. There is a healthy and thriving scene of indie "arthouse" games which would doubtless be enriched immensely from your contributions.

The Mass Effect series is and always has been a AAA game, on the tier of videogames which roughly corresponds to Hollywood blockbusters. And you know what the makers of Hollywood blockbusters do when the test screenings show people don't like the ending? They change it.

Unless the Extended Cut surprises everyone with how well it wins over the ending-haters, I would worry about the next RPG you make. You don't get to make AAA games unless you turn a profit, and you won't turn a profit on the next RPG extravaganza you produce if you drive away such a large chunk of your core audience like this.

PS: Your "artistic integrity" seems to amount to presenting a series of choices which almost precisely mirror those in the first Deus Ex game. I suppose it is possible to show integrity without being original, but it doesn't sound very artistic to me.

Reserving final judgment until we get more details, I will say the artistic integrity line is still nonsense. You're trying to make money from this ergo its a product.

As its a product, you should be open to fixing broken aspects, not explaining how they were broken in the first place. If I buy a laptop, I don't expect to receive it with no keys and a cracked screen, accompanied by a note explaining how it got into that state, I want it fixed.

You've clearly listened to the fans and decided we're wrong but to placate us, you've thrown us a bone of extra scenes that are likely only to be things cut from the original game anyway. I'll wait and see but don't hold any hope that it'll rekindle my desire to play the ME franchise.

So, BioWare responds by clarifying their ending for free, and people are still saying its not enough because they disagree with the ending as a whole and want something to change it?

*sigh*

I never thought id say this, but that is true entitlement right there.

When you pay for a product, yes, you're entitled to get the product advertised.

They literally told us the ending woudln't be "Pick A, B or C" and that's exactly what it was.

This isn't complicated.

Oh, its more complicated than you think. Considering this is a liscenced product under the EULA, tehcnicaly you own no product advertised in a legal sense.

So technically, you are not entitled to anything. That said, they are giving you changes when they didn't have to. If your only problem with the damn ending is the choice of what to do like that, then don't play the ****ing game and stop ****ing, because that was never going to change.

And everyone knew that.

Well if you're going to be picky and literal, they are not giving us changes.  They said, specifically, that they are NOT changing the endings.  What they are doing is providing additional cinematics in an attempt to shut down their most vocal critics.

Oh. Okay. I get it now. So instead of one fairly short ending with three different colors depending on a choice made in the last 5 minutes of the game, we'll now get one fairly long ending with three different colors depending on a choice made in the last 5 minutes of the game.

Yeah, that'll convince me to play through the game again and buy the retake Omega DLC.

I've found an excellent translation of Bioware's statement from corporate double-talk to English. Enjoy!

Through ignorance, either willful or unintentional, we here at Bioware have completely failed to grasp why a vast, vocal part of our fan-base didn't enjoy the ending to Mass Effect 3. As a solution to this, we're going to further develop and explain the ending that almost nobody liked, completely ignoring the varied, incisive, and entirely justified criticisms we've received. Instead, we're offering a compromise that will literally pacify no one, and will, in all likelihood, do more harm than good. We understand that you have complaints, but art. Thank you for giving us all that money, and please give us some more in the future contrary to logic or good sense.

So basically your listening......to an Ipod while pretending to listen to us?

Artistic blah blah, Bullsh*t. The ending makes no sense and you guys know it. I don't want "closure", I want the ending your boss was bragging about. You know the "not an A,B or C ending." . The ending that could diverge wildly because it didn't need to take a sequel in account, the freaking promissed ending that made me forget about the crappiness that was the repeating rooms/caves called Dragon Age 2 and made me give you guys my money.

So how about you take your cute little DLC back to your boss and tell him it's not good enough.

PLAY the DLC first. Wait and see.

Geez, we get a free DLC and all people do is complaining? Check out the DLC's content. If it's not sufficient, you can still complain then. Give Bioware a (tentative) break for now and wait for PAX/answers/the DLC itself.

Generally when someone has lost trust, and lost respect, you don't keep giving them chances to screw up further.

Sorry.  Guilty until proven innocent, in this case.

What a lovely bastardization of the law.

I wish Bioware had not announced anything at this point. Because not even a FREE DLC as a compromise is good enough.

Sometimes a compromise is the best you can hope for.

So what the hell have you been listening to? - You even had a thread for that remember?

We are witnessing the end of BioWare. What a tragedy.

As much as I want to applaud this DLC, I can't help but agree to this. It looks like the feedback thread was just a big ploy to get people preoccupied with something else.

Yeah... unless this "deeper insight" means the indoctrination theory will be confirmed/retconned in (which, let's face it, it won't be), then I won't be buying Mass Effect 3. Boy am I glad I waited before pre-ordering it now!

An official press release went out today announcing how we are re-prioritizing the Mass Effect 3 post release content schedule to provide a more fleshed out experience for our fans. For many of you the "Extended Cut" will help answer some questions and give closure to this chapter of the Mass Effect story. Oh and it's at no cost to you - the fan.

Here is a mini FAQ to help you understand what the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut is and isn't:

What can fans expect from the Extended Cut DLC?
For fans who want more closure in Mass Effect 3, the DLC will offer extended scenes that provide additional context and deeper insight to the conclusion of Commander Shepard's journey.
Are there going to be more/different endings or ending DLCs in the future?
No. BioWare strongly believes in the team's artistic vision for the end of this arc of the Mass Effect franchise. The extended cut DLC will expand on the existing endings, but no further ending DLC is planned.
What is BioWare adding to the ending with the Extended Cut DLC?
BioWare will expanding on the ending to Mass Effect 3 by creating additional cinematics and epilogue scenes to the existing ending sequences. The goal of these new scenes is to provide additional clarity and closure to Mass Effect 3.
When will the Extended Cut DLC be available?
Currently the Extended Cut DLC is planned for this summer, no specific date has been announced at this point.
Why are you releasing the Extended Cut DLC?
Though we remain committed and are proud of the artistic choices we made in the main game, we are aware that there are some fans who would like more closure to Mass Effect 3. The goal of the DLC is not to provide a new ending to the game, rather to offer fans additional context and answers to the end of Commander Shepard's story.
So there you have it. Are we proud of the game we made and the team that made it? Hell yes. Are we going to change the ending of the game? No. Do we appreciate the passion and listen to the feedback delivered to us by our fans? Very much so and we are responding.

Be good to each other and Summer is coming...

If you can't change the endings, fine. I personally don't get the reason, but fine.

However, friendly advice. Tell the guys who are writing all the public statements to drop the Artistic vision line. It just makes people even angrier. It's a simply ridiculous excuse.

Honestly, I'd rather you just tell it to me straight. "We are not changing the endings because we feel the effort is not worht it." Would I disagree? Yes, but I'd at least respect the fact that you gave it to us straight.

I dont see how "we believe in the ending we made" as being the straight answer.  Just because some people dont like it doesnt mean it lacks artistic integrity.  The brevity of the ending did it no favors, though.

The writers won't do more endings. That's the long and short.

I'm thrilled that they're releasing this. They are doing -something-. It may not have been what some people wanted, but it's a hell of a lot better than them doing absolutely nothing at all. I'm going to wait and see what happens next, both with this DLC and when I've seen it - then I will make further judgement.

Pretty much this.

Seems pretty damn alive and real to me. Why not wait and see what this DLC does exactly before assuming that it's dead? Unless you have it in front of you -now- and can so for sure one way or another, it's best to wait and see.

Yes. A free DLC is a horrid thing to do.

HORRID!

I am talking about the DLC itself.

Not about the FREE part.

Play it FIRST. You haven't played it yet.

I will play it. If it sucks,. I'll complain.

Why? so Bioware can troll me some more?

No thanks.
(Fool me once....)

So you'll just complain for the sake of complaining?

No. It was clear that mostly everyone wanted a better ending. A ending were peoples choices mattered. Insted we get some BS ending. Now they are exending on that BS ending with more BS.

Dear BioWare,

the artistic vision of your team corrupts and breaks the narrative coherence of the triology. That is the central critical failure of the games ending and it's been adressed and explained many times over. Yet, it get's not resolved. A nonsensical and illogical conclusion, represented by the character of Starchild, can not be brought in line with the established lore of the franchise and can not present continuity or closure to the audiance, no matter how much clarification you put into it.

As this character alone is symptomatic for the most essential cause of our dissatisfaction with the games ending, the decision to keep him and his "solutions" (which are also illogical and nonsensical) does not make us believe you "listened" to us. In fact, it shows the very opposite.

As you value your "artistic vision", even if it clearly breaks a central aspect of the franchise and the the artwork as a whole, over the perception of your customers, you encourage us to not purchase future Mass Effect or BioWare productions. I will regard it further as an "informed customer decision" that BioWare products are not meant to entertain me, but to present and enforce a childish and in parts utterly stupid artistic experiment on me.

Thanks no. My money is better invested in other companies.

Well said.  I agree.

I am so sad and sorry that it's come to this.  I've bought everything that Bioware has made for PC since Baldur's Gate and loved every game.  But maybe I'm not part of Bioware's intended audience any more.
