I've broken one boycott temporarily. My Microsoft (Linux only on all but my school laptop) boycott has been put on hold due to unfortunate Microcentric practices of my university. I did go from Win 98SE to Win 7 without ever using Microsoft products, and I'm counting the days until my educational license ($30 Win 7 Pro) of Win 7 expires upon graduation so I can wipe my laptop and go back to Debian.

Square/Enix, Ubisoft, Apple, P&G, Pepsi, all have been stuck to except the Microsoft one. Unfortunately there are times when practicality must win out, but I don't see EA/BioWare as coming out with something that will be truly necessary.

I must admit that most people who say they're going to boycott something don't stick to it, but I'm hoping that this stacked on top of DA2 (which looks pretty darn good by comparison) will help people remember why they decided to discontinue their support.

Yeah it's very hard to boycott M$ if you're using a regular PC of any kind.  Possible, but difficult.  Though, M$, to their credit, has been behaving better in recent years.  Not that it's saying MUCH, mind you, but it might make you feel better about it.

Maybe I missed something... but why would you need to boycott MS?

Considering the half-finished and recycled DA2, ME series wrecked by ending and TOR where 95% of servers are pretty much empty, then sticking to my guns would not be that hard.

M$ was significantly more evil back in the day than they are now.  They pretty much ruined word processing and spreadsheet programs through monopolization.  The fact that windows XP pretty much killed our ability to play DOS games without an emulator hasn't helped.

Granted, they're behaving a little better these days, but it's not by much.

I'll forever fail to understand why that is so.

My home network runs faster and is more secure than the university one being comprised entirly of Linux, BSD, and Android systems. I have my own web, FTP, IMAP, BBS, NNTP, IRC, chat, and several other servers. I can print remotely and manage anything on it through SSH. Open Office, and LaTeX, work just as well if not better than MS office.

I think big companies and schools sell their soul to Microsoft for a discount, there's no other reason for the prevelance of Windows in professional and academic environments.

Now PC gaming of all levels, that goes mostly to Windows, but I'd think companies would prefer to cut down on people playing WoW or Peggle instead of working. There's also the benefit of not having the computer illiterate installing countless freeware programs on company computers leading to severe security risks.

Heh, I still have a DOS laptop for playing my old games.

Elder Scrolls, Might & Magic, Wizardry, Ultima, AD&D Gold Box, Anvil of Dawn, Bard's Tale, Civilization, Death Gate, System Shock, Quake, Doom, Duke 3D, Heretic, Hexen, Rise of the Triad, Wolfenstein, Commander Keen, Krondor, MDK, Tyrian, Raptor: Call of the Shadows, Catan, SimCity 2000, X-Com, Ys..

Then there are things like Carmen Sandieago, Oregon Trail, and Number Munchers for the kids.

Not to mention Word Perfect with quick and easy keyboard shortcuts and support for dot matrix printers that can be re-inked easily rather than spending more for cartridges than to buy a new printer.

Now I'm missing DOS :,(

Not many of my favorites are remembered anymore. Being a gamer from the 80s is lonely sometimes :P

I understand you may not be happy with ME series or DA2 Brawne. But I may disagree with 95% of TOR servers being empty. That may be open to interpretation. I do not believe they have come out with statistics or numbers to show that. I could be wrong though.

I dont need statistics. I have characters in several servers, both in US and EU, dead servers with maybe few hundred people playing, dead AH, dead PvP queues, dead chat and nobody doing flashpoints.
There are 2 servers in EU and maybe 5 in US where people have pressed themselves, abandoning their mains into empty servers, those are full to bursting. Everything else is pretty much dead.

On another note, just finished downloading 10 Gb patch of Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition, completely free. This is how you keep your clients happy, not shoving day 1 DLC down their throats.

You dont actually need to buy brake fluid for your car either but it kinda helps.

How is that opposite to the point?
When your car dealer drains your car's break fluid and tells you that you need to buy it separately with your new car would you be terribly happy about it?

Difference being that not buying that brake fluid could potentially kill someone, I think there is a massive difference between potentially killing someone and not buying the DLC for a game.

So it's ok to screw your customers if it doesnt kill them?

It's closer to Pagliacci Pizza, they charge you $40 for a pizza, then when you ask for some sauce they charge you a quarter, and if you bought the over-priced pizza with your card and have no cash you're SOL.

Not only that, but they pour bleach on their pizza so the homeless people can't eat it while every other pizza place takes their leftovers to the shelter or hands them out on the street.

That last bit could've killed someone, but then it wouldn't have been a customer so does that make it okay?

I can't believe you just said that, it's some DLC for a game, it's nothing to get worked up over. It's something that is optional, you dinna have to buy it if you don't want to.

I would not get worked up if it was just DLC. I bought all the DLC for ME2. Difference is that they cut the Ashes out from the main game so they could sell it to you for extra cash on first day.
And they did same with DA2.
And dont start about how it was completed later, there is plenty of evidence floating around that this was exactly what they were doing.

It's probably more attempt to circumvent freeloaders than kill homeless, but even still, that is downright wrong.  EA would no doubt pull some crap like that if they though it'd help advance their business.

Good gosh, I'm 29 and already I feel old.  I remember every single one of those games to some degree.  I've played most of them, and seen all of them.

Holy **** man, my grey hairs are coming soon :(

We will fight. Never retreat. Never surrender. For the absence of our money from Bioware/EA is the greatest glory that can be achieved in this life.
A little dramatic but you get my point.
