This is the error message I get when I'm trying to install DA:O. I bought the game in the US when it was realased, but I live in Finland. So when I got back to my home and I try to install the game this happens :(

I was able to install the game on to a windows XP laptop ,though, while i was in the US, so I really dont understand why this happens.

My home computer here in Finland is

Windows Vista 64x Bit
Intel Core Duo CPU @ 2.66GHz
5,00 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 4800 series

Also, while trying to solve the problem, running the installation as admininster didnt help, but when i tried to run it with different compability options, during the installation it tells me I cant install Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 to a 64x bit vista, after which it tries to extract the game files and stops at 0.0% and gives the error. Without compability options it doesnt give the .NET Framework error though. I havent tried downloading and installing the .NET Framework, as i recall my computer totaly went dead with some update (akin to that name) a year or two ago. Any help is appreciated.

Did you try changing the region for your DVD rom? You under properties in device manager.

I dont think that should have an effect, as I'v had more than just this game brought to me from the states. And I think i have it as region free also.

ah nevermind, its not region free but I dont think it has any effect on the fact, but if someone from bioware knew whetever or not the dvds are region encoded, insight would be helpful :P

The installation tools that EA chose to use are very unstable and persnickety.  The slightest smudge on the disk, the slightest bit of lint on the drive mirror, any minor deviation in the drive's firmware from the official ATAPI standard, and it chokes.  Try different DVD drives.  Clean your disk and drive carefully.  Try copying to a folder on the hard disk and installing from there.  Borow a friend's external DVD drive.

Many of the digital downloads suffer similar difficulties, with much less simple fixes, HOWEVER, if you have a retail hard copy with problems, you can use your CD-Key to download a digital copy from EA's store.  .  Please don't ask me to describe the process, however.  I do not use digital copies of games, or much at all like any DLC, because the easily affordable Family Combo of Landline, 'Net, and TV from my cable company isn't "broad enough" of a broadband for that.

P. S.  While I clearly recall the Pernese dragon named Mnementh -- I don't recall one with the OP's handle.

Several things could be causing this issue all the way from language requirements and region to the MSXML engine not working right. I would suggest that you make sure that enUS is installed on your system as a language choice and that you also have the latest MSXML / .net libraries installed to make sure that you have everything at a standard. If you are worried about the system becoming corrupt do a backup before installing so you can roll back any changes. Best of luck to you.

some dev help would be nice... and how do i upload a screenshot i took so i could just show the error.

I updated the computer to Service pack 2 but I cant get .Net Framework 2.0 or .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 to this computer as it still keeps saying it doesnt support vista and I cant find any version of it which supportd vista. I also learned that .Net Framework 2.0 should be built inside Vista, but apparently it doesnt help. I dont have any external dvd stuff, only 1 built in device.  Some Help Please :<

oh and I tried installing the game on my other computer, which is windows XP using service pack 3, and the installation started rolling without any problems, i didnt wait it to finish though. So the problem lies in with my vista, so anyone with some experience about vista 64bit and workin dragon age on that system, please sahre your info!

thanks.

If you can network those 2 machines together, install it to the XP machine, then copy the folder over to the Vista machine. Might need to export and import the registry settings, but it may just work with a file copy. Long shot, but you might get lucky.

Vista is a very poor OS overall (64 bit support was iffy as hell), and I'd recommend a swtich to Win7 as soon as you can.

I'm personally running it on Win7 X64 and it's flawless.

Yes i've noticed that vista has many problems. But also I dont know how to mess with the registries. I think the problem lies within the .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 thing... just dont know how to solve it. I also read about changing the InstallShield folder name in C:\\Program Files\\Common Files, but the thing is, I dont see InstallShield folder there...

This just sucks so bad...

Ok, gonna take a Hail Mary pass at this before I head for bed.

Go under your Control Panels and open up Add/Remove Programs and see if it lists any of the .NET packages there.

Supposedly V2.0 is installed by default with Vista, so I'm not sure if it would let you uninstall it, or what the consequences may be, but I did find the following link on the MS site to install it.

http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en

That is the full Software Developer Kit for V2.0 of the .Net Framework, which should install everything you need for it.  It's probably overkill, but you sure won't be missing anything by using that one.

You may be able to just install that package over the existing installation and it may fix whatever might be wrong.  Sadly this may not even solve the whole issue, but it's one area that might help if you want to try it.

Vista can be a nightmare, and I wish I could sit there at your PC and go over things, I hate trying to diagnose remotely, but maybe that link will help.  I'll keep my eyes open if I see anything else.

Good luck!

And yeah, I installed it onto an XP machine and it worked fine.. But I've used Vista and Seven and it's not working on my comp. I have a nice machine to, so it has nothing to do with that.

Haha, EA's customer service is weak. The reply I finally received didn't help me at all, it more like a generic reply which they just copy paste to every problem -_-' ... But I figured out myself how to get it work. Way earlier when I tried installing DA:O to my windows xp computer, it started rolling with the installation just fine, but I never finished it. So today when I Upgraded my vista to win7 and DA:O still didn't work I was starting to wonder if it was the DVD which was damaged.

So today I installed the game on my XP computer, it worked. So it wasnt the DVD but something on this computer which causes the installation and file copy to fail. Anything I tried which had something to do with the DVD always failed. Didn't matter was it either installation or file copy from dvd to hard-drive. So I copied the files from the dvd to my external hard-drive on my XP computer, and now I'm installing the game from my external HD and so far its almost done. yay! And EA didn't help at all!

after 2 weeks, this is the first mention i've been able to find referencing my specific problem. i have a digital download of ME2 from D2D that i've never been able to install. i get the same error message as the title of this forum, but every time i look for help the discussions are always about the hardcopy fixes. can anyone point me to any discussion of how to get the digital download version of ME2 to install? i've deleted and redownloaded the entire thing about 6 times now and it always fails with the same message.

Personally, I own the hard copy, however, I've also seen a similar number of owners of digital download editions that don't install correctly post queries. What I've not done is to try comitting any of the responses to memory. Without easy access to a search function (AFAIK, it still exists, in its nascent, inefficient form), just tucked away without public links, I'm no better at turning any of those up than you are, sorry.

Nm finaly got it on my system, seemd to have to go with "recomended settings" and not custom. I prefer custom as now i have it installed on my boot partition on the HDD.. where all my other games are on a seperate game and program partition... kinda pissed me off that it had to go there to install ok, but there u go.. now to see if it all runs ok.

Hello there, just wondering if people are still having this problem or have come up with a solution to it.

I recently installed Windows 7 on my machine (works wonderfully). I was running Dragon Age on this same PC but using Windows XP, I hoped (in vain) that the upgrade to Windows 7 would rid me of the horrible, game breaking graphical artifacts that plagued my screen whenever I wanted to play - yeah its a graphics card issue, but I still wanted to upgrade!

So I installed Windows 7 and proceeded to install Dragon Age Origins - and I got the 'installation failed: unable to find a data file or the disk has been removed' error.

I'm currently trying to install it to my second hard drive and will let you know if it worked.

I'm using the DVD retail version.

Sorry for double posting but in this instance it is warranted:

The install to the second hard drive.....also failed!

I'm not entirely happy.
