"Artistic Integrity."
I've seen this phrase used, and I understand the idea behind the concept. However, the way it has been used would let one assume that it provides an infallible safeguard to anything that precedes it.
My personal opinion is that regardless of how the franchise ended, this label could've been attached to the work achieving the same effect. I fully respect the rights of an artist and the visions they flesh out into existence; but just because it was an original idea doesn't mean it was a good one.
Are the fans overstepping their bounds by demanding retribution for what they believe was a gigantic smear left on such an outstanding gaming franchise? I think that can be articulated both ways.
My personal belief is that one should stay true to their philosophies they have lived by. My final thoughts on the game's endings are that it took such a sharp U-turn from the key ideas exhibited throughout the series it took me a while to assess exactly what happened.
The Commander Shepard I've come to know and love (whom was so Paragon it hurt) would never play God and try to control the Reapers or assimilate everyone into a hybridized evolution. No one person should make that decision for everyone. Neither would he destroy the all synthetic life after forging an alliance between the Quarians and the Geth in conjunction to hooking up Joker and EDI. He would rather die fighting for what he believed in, even in the face of hopeless odds than accept the starchild's options.
The philosophy that our differences make us stronger together was prominent throughout the entire series. Just as the philosophy of hope in face of hopeless odds set the stage for a hero to emerge through trials and tribulations. Never compromise, not even in the face of Armageddon. In those moments when things seem most bleak, it would be easy to call it a day and go home, to surrender; but that's not the path I would choose, and neither would Shepard.
In short, I think "Artistic Integrity" as it is being used in this instance is very easy to hide behind. You can keep your loose interpretation of the concept as opposed to maintaining the integrity of a character who has become very dear to many hearts across the world.
