I wanted to try out a Phaeston VII/Phalanx IX combo on Silver difficulty with a level 18 controller human Soldier build. After getting kicked out of three lobbies, I finally got into a game on Firebase Ghost against Cerberus. We cleared the map with no problems. I had less hardened target kills than other players, but with stability and capacity mods on my AR and armor penetration and extended barrel on my pistol, I was DOLING out the damage on weaker mobs. I got 100 assists that round, and spent most of the time using the Phaeston to do it.

So why does everybody talk down the Phaeston? Have those dissing it even tried using it?

PS - I understand that automatic weapons tend to perform much more poorly on Gold difficulty, but the majority of players are spread over Silver and Bronze.

Because it doesn't kill anything, hell it can barely shoot through thin air.

I killed more assault troopers and centurions than anyone else that round. And killing hardened targets isn't the point of a controller. Controllers take out the trash.

Saber, Black Widow or hand guns works better for me atleast, phaeston is just a assist gun.

My only issue with the weapon is the issue I have with all full auto weapons that isn't the Revenant being wielded by a Turian, which is that they perform rather poorly on Gold.

Though for Silver/Bronze, it really doesn't matter.

I've used it. Did not enjoy the experience. Fun on bronze, less fun on silver, tediously slow to kill anything on gold.

@OP.
It is silver. Everything works if you are slightly good. Only gold shows the true colors of the guns from the hall of shame.

It's a solid weapon, but I prefer my collector rifle. Though if I didn't have it I would use my phaeston.

Its worse than the avenger. I take a whole clip to kill one cannibal. I have N7 576, I know when it sucks.
Geth rifle is much better.

Heavy, weak, and no stability. In exchange, it has capacity, but it's not like ammo is hard to come-by in this game.

You know, I use the Phaeston quite a bit. I load it out with Extended Clip or whatever it is (90 total rounds in the clip) and the Stability. It won't kill the Guardians effectively (unless I aim at the feet!), but it absolutely MURDERS most anything else. I tend to pair it with abilities like Adrenaline or Overload/Incinerate... It even works wonders with Warp... On Silver I even snag first or second place using this weapon because I'm doing the most damage to the big enemies (Geth Primes, Geth Pyros, Brutes, Banshees, Atlas Mechs, and the crazy katana girls... It also seems to destroy Turrets very fast). Granted it doesn't do a LOT of damage, but it does what I need it to do. I need it to be a bullet hose and so it is. A bullet hose with incredible accuracy. It becomes invaluable against enemies with Shields and Barriers and Armor... Just because I'm able to put about 400x more bullets into something than my allies are.

Granted, it's probably not as useful on Gold... But what SILVER TIERED weapon really is? For now, it's just a "holdover" until I start buying Spectre Packs and try to get the Revenant or the Saber. Overall, I enjoy the gun. So much better than any SMG, ha ha. And able to put out a TON of damage while others are reloading their Sniper Rifles.

First, my Geth AR is weak. It's at level II I believe, and has no real effect on even shielded enemies. Second, you can kill any red trash with the Phaeston by using two or three controlled bursts. Third, its stopping power at level VII is greater than the Avenger at X.

Again, this is for Silver. But Silver is where you learn the mechanics of different roles for Gold, and since I don't have any friends who play MP... I'm kinda limited in my ventures.

People unlock low level gun apply low level to no mods or not the right one. Go on gold... then decides it sucks.

This is just like every other thread discussing the phaeston. It's a ****** poor Ar just like every other full auto AR when it ones to killing targets on silver/gold.

OP said it himself. He scored 100 assists. Not his problem, the gun's.

I have a revenant V, but I use the phaeston because its lighter.  I play a turian sentinel and I spam chain overload a lot, so the revenent is just too heavy.

I used a Phaeston X on Geth Gold. It did pathetic damage, made me quit the game and change back to the Carnifex.

I regularly run Silvers, and (in my experience, others' may differ) the Phaeston is pretty brutal. =)

I can understand that.  I don't usually factor "weight" into my character builds unless they're Adepts and are HEAVY on the powers.  my Phaeston is generally used on Engineers, Soldiers, or Sentinels.  I pick and choose my targets for powers though, so I don't worry much about "cooldown times".  And if they really concern me, I just take the extra cooldown upgrades from the tech tree.  The way I usually play is "sheer damage output".  That is to say...  I don't care much that a weapon weighs a metric crapload...  I care that it murders enemies in short order so my powers don't have to be used constantly.  That doesn't mean I WON'T use powers constantly...  It's just that they're not my primary concern.

There are players who hate the Phaeston 'cause it has low damage output.  I understand that viewpoint.  But with the right mods, it can outshoot players on Bronze/Silver who are using Widows or spamming Biotic Charge/Nova.  It's a pretty good gun for Bronze and Silver.  I'm certain it's probably WORTHLESS on Gold...  But hey, that's why there are upgrade packs.  It's why certain weapons are in higher tiers.  So you can "upgrade" to them.  I don't plan on using my Avenger X on Gold.  Nobody does.  Doesn't mean it's a terrible gun.  Just means it isn't "up to snuff" on the highest difficulty.

Every gun has its place and uses.  It's just up to the players/teams to figure them out and figure out when they are inapropriate.

I use it on my Turian Soldier all the time on Bronze/Silver. And it's only lvl I. With Marksman, it gets even better accuracy, and what it lacks in damage per shot... it makes up for by with a stream of bullets to the face.

None of my other guns work as good as the Phaeston on my TSoldier. I'd love the Revenant, but I don't see that happening anytime soon (screw you, RNG).

Phaeston I vs Avenger I:

Weight:
Phaeston -> 1.5 ; Avenger -> 1.0
DPS:
Phaeston burst: 34,7 damage per shot * 600 rounds per minute / 60 seconds = 347 damage per second
Phaeston sustained: 347 damage per second * 5 seconds per clip / 6.37 seconds per clip + reload = 272 damage per second
Avenger burst: 38.6 damage per shot * 500 rounds per minute / 60 seconds = 321.7 damage per second
Avenger sustained: 321.7 dps * 3.6 s / 4.4 s = 263 dps

The bottom line is: The Avenger is about as good as the Phaeston while weighing way less and being less rare.

Did you actually kill more enemies than the rest of your team, or did you happen to shoot the most enemies with the last bullet due to your high ROF? :)

Like the Avenger, I find the Phaeston underwhelming. Unlike the Avenger, it does not weigh nearly nothing, it weighs something. If I want an underwhelming AR I might as well take the lighter one. I would much rather run my Mattock V or Vindicator VI on any character compared to the Phaeston or Avenger though. Or I would prefer running a different class weapon altogether.

Marksman isn't really the answer either. Vindicator has been drastically superior under Marksman in my experience.

Have a Phaeston X, but after using a Mattock X for awhile, the Phaeston feels like an air-gun. The amount of time you have to spend on a target pouring in bullets is horrendous. They weigh about the same too.

One of the prime arguments against the Phaeston, at least in my opinion, is the fact that it is uncommon.  If you have the two weapons at equal levels (say, X), then Avenger is going to outperform the Phaeston at range.  With the Turian Soldier or Sentinel, the Phaeston performs better due to the Turian's "Turian Veteran" passive providing a good chunk of stability.

So in my opinion/experience, use Phaeston if:
-Playing Turian Soldier or Turian Sentinel
-You chose 1+ Damage and Stability from Turian Veteran
-Phaeston's Weapon Level >= Avenger Weapon Level

Otherwise, use the Avenger.  If you don't have Avenger X, stop being a putz and buy a dozen or so Recruit packs.  Most of the starter weapons are EXCELLENT and really cheap to obtain.

I am not very lucky with my packages. I am waiting for so long now to get my Phaeston. I really liked it in Single Player. In SP it was my favourite assault rifle together with the prothean particle-gun. I really want to test in Multiplayer =/
