Because I have the ME3 voice chat disabled since I use Vent.  It would be nice to be able to communicate with people who aren't on the Vent server.

what's weird is that the code for Text chat & Remappable Buttons as well
as
Server/Ping Browser list is already built-into the game because it's using the Unreal 3 engine that's used in Unreal Tournament that has all this built-in already (you can even see them if you read the game files)

why didn't Bioware enable it or was it a Microsoft decree (Microsoft has previously banned text-options in it's games as well as mouse/keyboard options & ping/server browser lists for XboxLive)

Just make there be an "ignore-all" feature that is easy to use.

To be honest it should be easier to disable voice chat as well. Currently I just switch the output for voice chat to some other device so it doesn't go through my speakers.

In game there really isn't much time for texting:
Player 1 Dies
Player 2 "Hey are you Ok?"
Player 1 "Revive!"
Player 2 "What? Dont you have medigel?"
Player 1 "Just revive, i spent it already!"
Player 2 "But there's a Brute on your way"
Player 1 Bleeds To Death
Player 1 "*#$!" YOU!""

In lobby... well.. will you press the ready button or are we gonna chat about the weather?

I think I summarized what text can bring.. what I think would be more usefull would be Voice Radio Commands (like the automated ones we already have "Give me cover" "Banshee!" "Contact" etc..).

Just my 2 cents

Seriously, I can't begin to say how much I hate this. Would it be that hard to add in? It ruins any form of communication unless you have a mic.

I'd like to point out that back in the Demo, their was an option for Text Chat that was bound to 'B'.
however pressing it did nothing, so I assume it was taken out for some reason.

I do have a mic, but ME3 doesn't seem to be aware of it because no matter what settings I fiddle with in game it doesn't work.  I suspect no one would be able to understand me though, because the rare person I hear with a mic is indecipherable.  Only one time have I ever been able to understand someone.  It doesn't matter anyway, as text chat is a BASIC function in any PC game.  There is absolutely no good reason for something so simple, and so necessary, to be overlooked.

So to answer the OP's question, no I have not forgotten about the lack of text chat.  Without text chat, or an in-game add friend button, this game is the loneliest multiplayer game I have ever played.  I feel no sense of community within the game at all.

Yeah, maybe!  I've played a lot of multiplayer games in my time, and when you join a lobby you say, "hey, what's up" and sometimes people say "hey" back.  True story.  Sometimes you might even talk about something while you wait for the 4th to show up.  Shockingly, you could even ask if you want to go with 3.  Or you could suggest to the noob that he try a different weapon combination instead of just kicking him out because you didn't like his setup.

Talk about whatever!  Or don't !  It's better to at least have the option.

I stand to agree.

It becomes especially appearant in the lobby when you spot someone trek around the most redicilous loadouts and you want to correct them :o

you cant correct them tho if they dont have what you suggest, and as everythign is RNG, they cant just pick what you suggest either, they gotta just use whatever they have at hand.

I'm talking about such choices as an Adept using a Sniper Rifle, or anyone using the Ultra Light Materials, or someone using Smart Choke on the GPS.

WHen you play in Gold and Silver, 90% of the time the players will have something more useful in their inventory.

And even if you don't got anything as an Adept, the Predator is still good until you get Phalanx > Carnifex.

I game when my wife and daughter are asleep in the next room.  Voice chat isn't an option for me.

Honestly I'd love the option of text chat too.

Heck, just did a gold match (in which our Vanguard fell through the floor) where someone was asking a few questions about how the Valiant performs. But no mic = no answer. Couldn't even tell him it's 3/30 ammo capacity, which was the main question he had. It's pretty frustrating. And yes, I do have a mic. Not everyone is always in a situation where they can use it though.

You have to wonder at the thought process that led to a player having to guess whether pressing the space bar would ressurect your friend, hide beside the wall next to him, sprint past him or show off your acrobatic skill to his corpse.

If you dont care for text chat, how hard is it to not post in a thread like this?

I'd rather not have to deal with 12 year olds shouting and swearing at me through text as well as a headset.

Where do you meet all these screaming, cursing 12 year olds? I haven't seen one yet, in close to 100 games.

Maybe the problem lies with you?

Anyway, this argument is so amazingly stupid on its face that I have a hard time believing that the ones who make it aren't just trolling. Any arguments against text chat, because it can be used to be obnoxious, are also at the same time arguments agaist voice chat... so they can't be used to defend voice chat-only... even a screaming 12 year old would understand that.

Text chat can make a game a lot more toxic-- people tend to be a lot more toxic when typing, and a bit more cordial when they have to talk and its their own voice. There's a lot of chat rage in other games that detracts from the overall experience.

However I do think there needs to be some way of improved communication. At least emotes or keys players can hit to send pre-canned messages to other players.

I'd love to use it for situations when I join a group that is 3x biotics as my engineer/soldier - and actually be able say "Oh hang on, I have an adept I can use" before getting kicked, or even more funny when we all do the weird lets keep changing characters at random until we get a team loadout that looks good

So far it's been fine without it, it would only be used pre-game and for what exactly?

You can check anyones equipment and loadout, their class and level and ask question thru mic. Kick them if you feel like they will be burden.

I too am disappointed that Bioware hasn't inserted the most basic of communication systems in this game. Even games released in 94' have text chat.

So true.

I don't like text chat option but I could accept it if it were for lobby only. In-game, I do not want a text chat box anywhere in my screen. I truly hope that - if ever added - there would be an option to hide it / klick it away. <_<

So yeah... instead of making a new thread, I figured I would bump this one, since I found it using the search function. Please applaud.

Anyway, TEXT CHAT NAO.
