I would think it depends on what you mean by "pure mage." Will the mage be doing lots of AoEs, CCs, or focusing on direct damage?
I ask because there are different mage equips that focus on boosing your stats (so, will and magic) and others that boost mana regen and defense.

Well, the libertarian cowl is a good helm, it adds .05 or .25 mana regen and 12 defense. As cloth, it doesn't add anything to fatigue.
For belt on the PC, I got the archivist belt (sold in wonders of thedas, denerim) b/c it adds xp when you read xp granting tomes. From 50 xp to 75 xp... I was at level 22 right before the landsmeet.
No suggestions for boots.... as a "pure mage" are you using the Reaper's Vestment?

I gave my mage Andruil's Blessing. Costs over 100 gold though.
+2 to all attributes
+20% nature resistance
+2 mana regeneration in combat
+2 stamina regeneration in combat
+10 physical resistance
And Frostshear (+10% cold damage) with Ring of Faith (+10% fire damage) because I was a CoC/Winter's Grasp/Fireball/Inferno spammer.
Not sure about the boots; apparently I never stopped using the Lion's Paw, and that's a preorder bonus...
And she never wore a helm because I liked her hair too much. >_>

Magus War Boots are +12 defense, but I can't remember where I found them. For gloves I would probably look at the ones that grant a +20% damage to whichever element you use the most. There are some gloves I found somewhere in Orzammar that granted +5% to each element. For belts there's one that lower's aggro and grants a spellpower bonus (I'll look it up when I'm on my gaming rig). For rings you might consider Lifegiver if you're a bloodmage, you can get that one from the lyrium addled shopkeeper in Orzammar (the one that sounds like Neelix from ST:Voyager).

War Boots are from unleashing the Trickster Whim in Summoning Sciences then getting the Chantry Board quest to kill it. You'll find the Trickster on a random encounter after that and fight him

If you're gonna cheat by means of XP and Money to get the most powerful gear, why don't you just alter your stats directly?

I dont't see the point in playing games when you can just cheat and become a 'god' and just look at something and it falls over. If your in it for the story...watch a movie or read a book.

Feet-I'm using the Lion's Paw-I like the missile avoidance bonuses and the 10% dodge.
Belt-If you have the money, Andruil's Blessing is hard to be beat. If not, the Destructionist Belt or Sash of Forbidden Secrets-though you get that in Amgarrak. I haven't played the Witch Hunt DLC, so i haven't got the belt in that one. I've heard it's the best belt of all.
Helm-I think it'd be the First Enchanter's Cowl, but you get that late. Until then, it's the Libertarian Cowl

The belt that Witch Hunt unlocks is the Cinch of Skilful Manoeuvering (+1 all attributes, 10% spell resist, 10% dodge), which is not the same as the belt that you find during that DLC (+2 all attributes, 14% spell resist, 15% dodge).
Yes, it is 14%. Same kind of odd joke as the Ephemeralist's Belt (1% spirit resist).
