i can accept that you believe that the Retake Mass Effect movement is asking you to alter your "artistic integrity." i can understand your disappointment, frustration and even anger in response to some of the venom you have received.
your "artistic integrity" was compromised before this ending was released with the game.
when?
when the original ending was leaked and you decided to alter the ending to what we now have.
you had a vision in your mind of how this game was going to end: you had already decided how you were going to finish this work of art. your artistic integrity was intact up until you decided to change the ending, given that we already had the information you originally "painted."
you are a painter (artist) creating image A, image B, image C and image D that tell a story. you have carefully worked on all 4 paintings at the same time over the course of many years. as you near completion, someone comes in and sees image D and goes out to the rest of the world to tell them about it. so instead of completing image D, you scrap only image D and begin painting image G. why? because the public now knows about image D. and so you paint image G, but you have to do it faster in order to release all 4 images at the same time. which means you may miss a crucial detail, or might get sloppy in your rush to catch up. you change the story told in image G to surprise people, make people talk, and convince both them and yourself of your genius.
you catch up after a short delay and you release all 4 images to the public. and the public thinks the images are the greatest paintings ever done until they see image G. and there is an uproar. why? because painting G doesn't match the quality, theme and/or story told by the first 3 images. so you react - you are on the defensive because you have poured your heart and soul into these 4 images (technically 5 images). you accuse them of not understanding your artistic vision. you tell them they don't "get it" about image G. when the people ask you to change image G or improve image G, you accuse them of insulting your artistic integrity.
the simple fact is that you decided to alter the image. you already altered your artistic integrity, simply because John Q. Public learned something they should not have learned about. had you never altered your artistic integrity and continued work with image D, some people might fuss about "oh, we already heard about it." but the vast majority who had heard about it would shrug it off as "oh, he was 95% complete when we heard about it, can you imagine having to change it after putting that much work into it?" and people with no foreknowledge of image D would never know the difference.
image D, in the above example, is your original ending, leaked in 2011. image G is what you did after the leak.
you compromised your own artistic integrity.
had the original ending never been leaked and you changed the ending to what we have now, we would certainly be scratching our heads and speculating, but i do not believe that you would have received such venomous statements. had you stuck with the original ending you had planned, some people may have been upset, but i do not think the reaction would have been nearly as strong. you still had time to adjust the endings, modify them a little, to keep them within your artistic vision but still surprise people who had foreknowledge of the endings. and to those who did not, they would never know about it until after the fact.
we are not asking you to compromise your artistic integrity - we are asking you to restore it.
sincerely,
