While am one of these "PC elitists" who does upgrade his system every few months, there is no need for me to do so if I was purely gaming. I simply require the increase in performance for uses other than gaming.
The graphics card that was in my system 3 years ago would still be able to run the vast majority of console ports today(with the exception of BF3). I don't think that console users should have to buy a PC, but neither do I think PC gamers should make do with low re textures and bad UI's from lazy console ports.
Look at BF3, that works great on a console, but still work and looks even better on a mid-high end PC.
Hell I run Battlefield 3 on max and FSAA x1 on a single HD 5770 (like I said before) and it runs amazing. DX11 allows for a game to look really good and be really efficient resource wise. I'm surprised at how great Battlefield 3 runs.
My card 3 years ago was a HD4850, I don't think it would be able to run BF3 at 1920x1080 at max, not with my preferred 8x AA, 16xAF, 30FPS min.
It was a great card, yeah, but not that great.
GTX680 arriving next wednesday though, with a waterblock.

First Nvidia card I've got that didn't need SLI to run three monitors.
