I've done a search, and it seems nobody who has asked before has had a positive answer out of this, but I reckon I'll try again. I think in my last playthrough I saw a vendor who sold 99x metal shards, but on this playthrough(when they would actually be useful) I can't seem to find them. Anybody know?
Thanks, apologies, and a third word.

I think the dwarf vendor in the slums in Orzammar has infinite metal shards for traps.

I remember reading in a thread that some vendors will expand their unlimited supply types when you progress in level. Unconfirmed though.

I'm hitting this problem now ... I fancy making a LOT of traps, but I just can't find many metal shards. Some vendors might have 4 or 6, but I haven't seen anyone selling infinite (99), although I seem to be able to find at least one, often more, vendor(s) selling 99 of everything else, including trap triggers. Anyone know if there is a vendor selling 99 metal shards, or even have a definite negative response to that question? THANKS!

There's no infinite metal shards in DustTown. Infinite Trap triggers, yes.
This sucks for those that have invested gold in traps and recipes.
Why would you limit only this item? Seems like an unfortunate mistake.

I think it was limited for a reason that falls into spoiler territory. Unfortunately, they broke that same "unlimited item dilemma issue" by making elfroot unlimited in the Dalish camp merchant. TBH I'm surprised one of the patches didn't limit elfroot from this merchant yet for this reason...

That really places Thieves at a disadvantage with any other talent/spell/skill. It's not just elfroot but most other 'basic' components (lyricum, elfroot, venom, etc) are all availabe in 99x quants at some some vendor. Metal shards are the main ingredient in almost all the traps. Sigh.

I've asked myself this same question. There is one vendor I know has x99 Metal Shards for a fact. Unfortunately he is in Lothering... Barlin. Since Lothering gets overrun as the game progresses...
I am on my 2nd play thru. I made a rogue and I've invested about 40g in recipes and 4 points into traps. I will now have to figure out how to use the console so that I can give myself Metal Shards. I would also have to figure out how to reduce my money so that I can "pay" for them... Did they play test this game much?

the guy in Lothering does NOT have unlimited metal shards, and I know because this is my 3rd playthrough (I'm trying to be a saboteur, which is some one who specializes in explosives, poisons and traps) and he only sells like, 5 or them. although, you can pick traps up again, like if you lay a large shrapnel trap and no one sets it off, you can walk over to it and reclaim it.
