Hudson lied to us and hid behind his company and boss (who have, appropriately, protected him) and never acknowledged the fans without a big pile of PR goop.

I still respect him, but I have no sympathy for him. This is worse than Bill Buckner by a factor of about 10.

I believe Casey have sacrificed serious amount of time in office hours with Mass Effect. More than many fans realise. But if all he heard and saw was the complaints, he wouldn't be able to continue doing what he does. I think he is focusing on the positive feedback instead. Rather than feeling sorry for him, I am just supporting him in his vision.

I feel sorry that he lacks the moral integrity to stand by and follow through on his words... Does that count?

Feel sorry for him? Not at all. I learned very young that when I lied I would be caught and I would have to own that mistake with nobody feeling sorry for me.

Besides, he has made a buttload off cash off of ME. Why would I feel sorry for that?

I think he has put himself into a tough spot. I'm not certain how much power he has at this time to resolve the situation he got himself into. It is entirely possible that someone above him has told him that there will be no resources made available to patch the game and that he has to work it out. Still, even if that were the case, I would think that there must be a more ... civil ... way in which to handle this situation with the customers that would make things easier on him.

I feel sorry for him and the rest of Bioware. While playing through ME 1 & 2, I was hoping other game developers will catch on to what Bioware is doing in making a sequel where your consequenes will affect the next game in the series. Mind you ME wasn't the first to do that & Bioware wasn't the only one who did that but they were the biggest in the gaming biz. Because of the internet backlash I worry that there will be less games like the Mass Effect series and more 4-8 hour First Person Shooters in the future (which I am not a big fan of).

The fan feedback has been overwhelmingly positive for the points that made ME great. Choice, Impact on sequels, good characters etc.
It has been overwhelmingly negative solely in regards to the rushed, badly written ending. And somewhat controversial, leaning towards negative, in regards to the more "shooty" parts.

There are multiple layers to this, and any analyst who's worth his salary knows that. So I don't see why the parts that were well received shouldn't be expanded upon in the future.

I'd really like to, because I can somewhat relate. I know what it's like to have an idea that I personally feel is brilliant and that people will love. I know what it's like to actualize that idea only to have it blow up in my face. To have to go and try to explain why I felt it was so amazing in the first place, hoping that people will see what I was going for.

Unfortunately, though, I cannot feel sorry for him. Even though I know that situation and have utmost respect for anyone trying to pull it off, I also know to take ownership of my errors and see where I went wrong. To admit that the ideas I had, while perhaps still brilliant and artistic, had nothing to do with the original intentions and theme of the story I was attempting to tell.

I feel sorry for the Bioware staff that truly worked their a.sses off to give us an outstanding game. I do not feel sorry for Casey and Mac for giving us the ending and lying to us.

He and Bioware have worked so hard to appease angry fans with the ending.  He even went so far as to make the clarification DLC free but now everyone is being so mean to him.  It must feel so terrible to have your fans turn their backs on you even though you try so hard to win back their support.

Him I don't feel bad for. Many other employees, maybe, but he blatantly lied about the game before its release and, by all accounts we have heard, he is one of two people responsible for that **** ending due to his pride and wanting to make it by himself without the input of other core writers. Making the DLC free was also likely not his call.

I don't feel sorry for people who lie and falsely advertise. Nor do I feel sorry for those people trying to defend their lie by saying it's artistic.

No, I don't. Casey Hudson made a number of promises to the consumer about his product that the product does not deliver on. That means (at least) one of two things:
  • he had little knowledge of the project he was working on
  • he blatantly lied to the consumer about his product
The former is incompetence, the latter is fraud, neither of which I can honestly be upset about someone feeling the deserved fallout from. Simply put: if you don't want people to criticize you for incompetence or fraud, then know what your product is, and don't make fraudulent statements about it.

Things took a turn for the worst with this announcement because it has really crushed peoples hopes Hudson's constant defense of the ending makes him a high profile target for abuse especially because his defense involves artistic integrity and most fans would argue that the ending doesn't follow the artistic bent of the rest of the game or the series as a whole.

In many ways I do feel a bit sorry for him since he's meerly the scape-goat of EA demands to leave plenty of ambiguity in the ending to be sorted out by DLC, novels, comic books, IOS games and eventually ME4. but he makes it difficult because of statements he made before release which turned out to be false and statements he's made after the release which have been PR double-speech.

Not a bit. He's lied to us the entire way. But does anyone remember his tweet about Deception being "a great lead-in to ME3?" Because, after the ridiculous amount of errors in that book and Hudson failing to notice them, I have to wonder if such an egregious ending is so unexpected. I mean, Deception was written by an outsider, but... for Mac and Casey to BOTH not see the amount of wrong in that book...

Ever since then, I've been worried. And I guess my fears were legitimate, since this is how the end turned out. Atrocious.
So, no. I don't feel sorry for him one bit.

A little, to be honest. He's a human being who (presumably) hasn't killed anyone or anything of that magnitude, and yet he's the target of mucho hate and vitriol, regardless.

That said, he probably gets paid reasonably well, has seemingly been .. er ... economical with the truth? about some aspects of ME3, and as head honcho is the one who has to take the lion's share of responsibility for ME3, be that praise or blame. So I'm not going overboard with the sympathy, but I still think we should show some basic respect for a fellow person ...
