Staarbux - seriously put Fenris on you in your tactics menu, that will make up the difference for Anders not being around. Also that unlocks the "tag team" achievement. If you also have another mage with heal, that helps too. (Unless you are a mage with heal)

Isabela and Varric were pretty much in 90% of my party unless for story reasons they were gone, and Fenris and Merril were the second 2 I used most often. I did use Aveline more than Anders

Sebastian Vael, easily.

Not because of his character, because he felt undeveloped in Dragon Age II, due to his DLC status. No, i like Sebastian Vael for his potential as a future companion.

People hate me for it... I can deal with that, Sebastian Vael has way too much potential to be benched as a cameo appearance or off-screen resolution.

Varric, he's just so easy going. Followed by Aveline. I've never been able to rival either of them, though I have everyone else.

Isabela. She's probably my favourite companion of all Bioware games.

But I love Merrill too, and Aveline and Carver. Edit: I quite like Fenris too, in a party without Merrill/Anders.

I find Aveline to be my least favourite because it feels like she wasn't finished written on.

Isabela and Varic. I usually romance Fenris but his constant anti-mage crap bugs me. Not nearly as much as Anders' mind-numbing single-mindedness, of course, but still. Merrill can be funny, but mostly she's just blah. Aveline, Carver and Bethany were just okay IMO. Sebastian...no.
