Since the entire point of collecting all of the researchers from different species was to ensure that the energy of the Crucible didn't run out of control and blow everything up, we really should be able to pick our own targets the higher the EMS score is. Obviously Shepard wouldn't target himself or his Geth allies, which might explain why Shepard would survive in the 4000-5000 EMS score ending.
