games together. We’ve done this with Witcher, Dead Space, Dragon Age and a lot
of other games. But the games we most enjoyed playing together was the Mass
Effect games- and now, now we have just completed ME3.
I’m writing this while my friends are downstairs preparing food for tonight,
food that we put on hold because we simply had to finish this epic game. All
through the game we have been hooked, we’ve generally loved the story and how
it was shaping itself. Though we kept an open mind, the ending numbed us emotionally;
we even reloaded and tried the two other choices. Apparently the difference is
just the color. And what the hell is Joker suddenly doing running away from the
battlefield?
That aside however; we can’t comprehend in any capacity what the hell the
writers were thinking when they created the end- and the Catalyst Child, that
was a load of crap, Shepard just stood there and accepted his bull****, we didn’t
feel in control, we felt like it must have been a bad dream. Hold on what, we
get three endings here, all of them crummy. I’m not saying I mind unhappy
endings, I’m a sucker for tragic endings- they are my damn favorite endings.
What I am saying is this; the ending was bad, BAD. It’s as simple as that, the
ending can’t hold a candle to the quality of the rest of the game.
Bioware, you gave life to a wonderful Sci-fi verse that we’ve loved to be a
part of. We understand that you retain whatever rights to it, we get this- and
if you wish to dish out an ending like this you are of course entitled. However,
what surprises me most is that you did, for one reason or other I can’t picture
the people behind the ending as people who have actually played Mass Effect.
The thing I am saying is this, we as fans love what you have created, but to be
frank I think the ending is soulless.
The ending feels like a poorly written side mission to the game itself. As me
and my friends have played through the entirety of your games we all had the
feeling that the conclusion would culminate in what would most likely be
remembered as the most epic video game experience manifest for us wonderful
gamers. We were with you each step of the way, loving every moment you’ve
poured into your world. That is why I and my friends can’t fit the ending with
the rest of what you’ve created.
What did we feel lacked then?
PASSION! Passion damn it! Shepard dragging his bloody body across the floor was
groovy no doubt, but it lacked grit and involvement. And when he finally
started the dialogue with the “Child” you had effectively lost us. Not to
mention the utter redundancy of the reasoning behind the Reaper Kill Cycles and
their ultimate purpose. And the three happy-go-lucky lame choices were just
utter bull*** (And no, I don’t even feel the need to explain why as I am sure
you know why already)
You could have made it heroic; you could have switched between the outside battle.
Flashes of our war assets quickly being pulverized while Shepard made the last
ditch effort to do whatever; music building and building until our emotions and
focus were tied to the screen- you’ve done this many times before; what you
achieved was instead this- a detached audience to a conclusion that alienated them-
removed them even from the interest of seeing how it all would unfold. You
could have made an end that would forever have paved the way as an example of
how heroic sci-fi gaming is done. Instead you gave us something else- I couldn’t
help thinking about the end of Deus Ex, (The original Deus Ex, being a veteran
gamer) but just a bad imitation that didn’t belong. For my friends though- they
didn’t even comment on the end, just saying “We’ll start making food”
I sat there for a few moments, then said this “Yeah, I’ll be right down- just
gotta write something” …and now I better leave, dinner is almost done. And I
need to forget and distance myself from this travesty.
