I don;t know if FTL speed is possible cuz the law of physics says we just can't which is proven in Sweden or Switserland. Maybe in de future we can. But for being able to fly at FTL speed you need an unlimited source of energy. Any ideas what we can use for that? :P

Laws of physics are not written in stone, so to speak. Einstein's equation is great and all but it can be broken, especially with the use of negative mass in the equation. Michio Kaku talks about some of it. There is not enough evidence to say that you can travel faster than the speed of light but if history has taught us anything its that new evidence comes with new technology.

In other words, people keep saying things are impossible now but then are proven wrong at a later time when technology advances to allow it.

Indeed. The mere thought of the Earth orbiting the Sun was once reason for being branded as a heretic.

Well back then it was more religious dogma than science. :innocent:

Religious or scientific, it was still the prime belief of the time. ^_^

I just hope that the law of physics is wrong. I want to explore the Galaxy! :D
Just as they tought the Earth was flat.... That was so dumb..

And hindsight is 20/20, go figure.  Just because science does not have an answer now does not mean science is not looking for one... and theories are made to be broken and scientists try and try.

The Scientific Method, such a wonderful tool.

Don't worry ;)

They used to say that going to the moon was impossible.

Scientists are discovering exoplanets constantly. Out of so many solar systems in this galaxy, ours can't possibly be the only one to have life. We're not even 100% sure yet that Earth is the only place in our own solar system to have life- Europa And Enceladus are possible candidates for life. It's neat to think about.

All these worlds are yours, except Europa. Attempt no landing there.

Couldn't help myself. :D

It is really neat to think about. Hope I live to see the day we discover even a simple form of life on another planet. Or discover that Mars once supported basic life. Might shift human perspective a bit. It is mathematically unlikely that we are alone.

Yours is a flawed comparison.

Today's models of reality are based on empirical observations and scientific naturalism while flat earthism is based on bronze age mythology.

Not nearly as prevalent a belief as everyone thinks.  The Earth was obviously round, and people knew that for years, even far before the time of Colombus.  Even the uneducated.

When you see the top of a ship's mast coming over the horizon, it doens't take a genius to see it is coming over, climbing a hill so to speak, which implies curvature.  Even uneducated sailors knew this, otherwise the entire ship would be in view nearly for eternity.

The reason no one wanted to support Colombus's ventures weren't because they thought the Earth was flat, but because they had calculated out, mathematically, almost exactly the correct size of it, and they figured he was going to run out of supplies long before he reached the Indies.  And he would have, if America hadn't been right there.

I think that the WHOLE earth should unite.. I know thats not possible... But i want that that should make things lots easier. Have presidents at specific regions of earth. Like One in Europe, One in Russia, one i Asia and one in America. And make Just one Type of money instead of Dollars Euros and Yen..

The thought that we'd be all alone in the galaxy, let alone universe is actually... depressing. D:

I prefer to think there's a lot of alien life out there... and not hostile either.

I agree with the OP, chances that we are alone on this vast universe are small.

However, when speaking of UFO and that kind of bs. I must say i disagree completly. I think that there's no reason or evidence to believe we have ever been visited by aliens, and im pretty sure that its more likely to have a conversation over the centuries that actually seing them.

Carl Sagan pretty much explained the problems with UFO and Real Science.

It is only a matter of time. It may or may not be in our lifetime but it will happen. It is needed for the survival of the human species.

This was actually first proven Erastosthenes in around 200 BC, he calculated the circumference of the earth with only about 1 percent of error.

In the late middle ages they sort of failed their calculations, they though the earth was one third of it's actual size.

Both can still be compared in the way that no one at the time had observed anything to contradict the belief.

I'll be honest. I'm a bit of a skeptic about alien life. At the very least, I don't believe there are advanced alien civilizations out there that have visited Earth before. I'm not saying that there are no aliens, I just don't think there is some sort of galatic government out there that rules over all known species in the galaxy.

I would like for some sort of galatic civilization to exist like in Mass Effect, but I just really doubt it.

So it seems the main factor determining how many spaceage civilizations exist is how many can reach that point without blowing themselves up.

As much as I respect Carl Sagan, mainstream scientists will always be bound to their academical credits and will always say what suits the public media, to preserve status quo.

In order to really discover all the facts and find the evidence of what is most feared by the entire world, you have to step away from preconceived ideas.

lol just in the first 45 seconds he makes a condescending comment about "1 or 2 witness's".

Within a year after Carl Sagan died, a giant triangle thing was seen hovering over Phoenix arizona by thousands of people, including then governor of the state.

Sagan was a smart guy but he was mistaken.

Agree, the Universe it's just to big for that kind of interaction. And we have no solid theory that could actually make us to believe that it's possible to travel so easily like in Mass Effect. In fact quite the opposite.

Chances are that Human Space Conquest will be a mix of 2001 Space Odissey and The Forever War.
Or even like Mass Effect BEFORE the discovering of the protheans and the mass relays.

In real world i think that humanity will:

1º: Start to discover Planets that COULD have life (the search has already started and bringed some results).
2º: Eventually we will find life in Europe or perhaps fossils of bacterias on Mars (that once had water).
3º: If we have lucky, one day projects like the one at SETI will discover a signal that after serious analysis would be confirmed as "extraterrestial origin". Then we wouls spend probably a lot of time figuring out what the hell says and answer something that will take hundreds of years to arrive, and hundreds of years to come back as a new answer. For example, let's say the Aliens live 100 lightyears away. That would mean we would have to wait at least 200 years for getting an answer to what we send.
