Honestly... I fail to see what's to like about the ending at all. At best it was anti-climactic and at worst it was contrived to say the least. That's why the defenders confound me. The ending in some respects reminded me of Star Trek V's ending in a sense. There's a huge buildup that is destroyed by an anti-climax.
If all the Crucible did was blow up the Reapers then how is that less anti-climactic? 100+ hours of gameplay all leading up to Shepard pressing a button?
I think it's time to clarify my point in saying that the ending was anti-climactic. Since ME1, the Reaper's motives for exterminating advanced cultures was a mystery. (As were their Origins) Finding out the how and the why of the Reepers was the anti-climactic moment I was referring to. Everything from there falls into place: The Crucible, ending the Reaper's cycle and Shepard's death. If anything, the only Climax was the destruction of the Relay. network. (but even then there are unresolved issues)
Thank you for clarifying. I didn't find it anti-climatic but I understand where you are coming from...
As for the happy ending projection that gets thrown at those that are unsatisfied with the ending. Knock it off! I honestly wouldn't mind a myriad of from "Happy" to EPIC FAIL sad endings. Plain and simple the ending didn't work with me. Shepard Dying again by default just annoyed me. Not because it happend but because it happend twice. I wouldn't mind a meaningful death if it didn't happen before and wasn't the focus of ME2.
When Bioware said this was the end of Shepard's story and as sacrifice was a major theme through out I was kind of expecting that part.
