I like naming the characters after the animals they represent. In SP they call Turians "birds," so I named my Turian Sentinel Albert Ross. For the Geth I went with movie references, so my GI is: H.A.L. and my GE is: SkyNet

I name my characters after corresponding characters from the story in my sig (and stories to be written), so a lot of them follow conventional standards.

Human adept: Kevin Folner (main character)
Asari Adept: Ferra Roskis (future story)
Asari Justicar Adept: Justicar Namila (likely not to be used)
Turian Soldier: Telius Mettak (future story)
BF3 Guy: The Sarge (Herp)
Quarian Infiltrator: Arla'Tavval ('vas Kellius' didn't fit, main cast)
Salarian Infiltrator: Ralik Dolannus (main cast)
Quarian Engineer: Siri'Kortel ('vas Kellius', again, didn't fit, main cast)
Salarian Engineer: Tarsil Dolannus (yup, brothers, minor character)
Krogan Sentinel: Urdnot Targold (minor character, also future story)
Turian Sentinel: Narik Corvallus (future story)
Batarian Sentinel: Sharak Thu'lon (likely not to be used)
Drell Vanguard: Ralatt Javan (possible future story)
Asari Vanguard: Maela T'Vess (brief mention, also future story)
Krogan Vanguard: Keyruch Surg (possible future story)

Lots of the 'future story' characters are cast from the same expansive unwritten original story. So I like my characters to have names I remember. I don't often refer to them as "Quarian Engineer" unless it's here on the internets (as obviously people don't know), I use their names.

I also tend not to promote, so...

Male: Agent Archer - Female: Agent Kane - Salarian: Illusive Sal (I was going to go for The Illusive Lizard, but it didn't fit)

Male: Adam Malkovich - Female: Samus Aran - Asari: Aria's Hand

To be fair I initially started this as I thought that promotion would only nullify ONE character, and the war asset would be lesser, but you'd get that character's name in the single player game as a war asset. 

Basically I was hoping to have Samus Aran show up in my war assets. Sue me.

My Batarian's are Barry and Larry. Geth are EN-808 and IN-303. Asari are Diana, Liana, and Alix. Human Engineer is Dave. Human Soldier is Mike. Human Adept is Isis. Krogan Vanguard is Scar. Turian soldier is Brutus and the Turian Sentinel is Cassius. Salarian Infiltrator is Saavik. And the Quarian Infiltrator is Cerene.
These are the only classes I'm playing with currently.

I usually name my characters after animes.

My Geth Eng is "Full Metal Panic", Quarian Infiltrator is "Ghost in Shell", Krogan Soldier "Hellsing" (Because of Carnage spam), and many more lol.

Well, I always name my krogan soldier wrath, my turian sentinel rupert, my krofan sentinel gilbert, and my asari adept elegance.
As for the rest, I'll go with cliches like the seven deadly sins.
But my first mp character, a human soldier was called "a giant turd." From there it just grew. Other names include another turd, the third turd, turd four, etc.
I also use names like butt cancer, diabetes, spelunker, etc.
Basically, if I cam think of anything childish and immature, I'll use it for a character.
