I don't hate boss fights, but some of my favourite endings are where I end up not fighting the boss (Fallout, PST, FONV, heck even Ultima VII). I don't think it's as necessary for a story based game. I enjoyed the endings of ME1 and ME2, but the boss fights were weaker parts for me. Convincing Saren to take his own life would have been a fitting end but we still get put into a boss fight. ME2's proto-reaper seemed to be a boss fight because games need boss fights. I would have been fine just destroying the collector base.
That doesn't mean there doesn't need to be a confrontation with an antagonist, but running around shooting or doing some sort of fight with a gimmick doesn't really appeal to me. If there's a battle, I'd prefer for it to be more of a puzzle.

An optional fight would have worked too i think. But Im not terribly upset theres no boss fight though i kind of wish there was.

Sure I can see the merit in that. I always imagined that a "boss fight" against Harbinger would be less a stand up fight and more like a boarding action (Harbinger is rediculous in size and a stand up fight would seem silly).
Perhaps fighting your way to his CPU and then some sort of action/puzzle element to disable him from within.

An epic Harbinger battle would satisfy my epic-needs.
The problem with that is ,how do you even begin to design a fight on that scale?
Shepard is what....6'1?
Harbinger is 2km.
How exactly do you make them fight?

As I said in my earlier post they could do it as a boarding action he is ship size and we know you can board them and fight inside from ME2.

I agree. I think it'd be better if there was a conversation that took a final boss fight's place. You know, one that represented the player's journey throughout the series.

I know! You can fight The Illusive Man! He can blow second hand smoke in your face for about 10 years, until you finally get cancer and die that way!!
What is this hang-up with having an end-boss?
Seriously.
I really don't get it.

See you back in the of oh 2007 when games had endings ..there was game called Metal Gear Solid 4 the ending of a long complicated story of War, heroism, love and honor. At the end of the last the game, there was a boss fight... on top of a Metal Gear...just like end if the first game. Though settings were different, in details it was showing how things had come full circle...
A Boss Fight with a TIM pocessed by Harbinger kinda like the one with Saren at the end of ME 1 would have been perfect.
and no are not stupid
I've never played any of those games, but that's neither here nor there.
What I have played is every BioWare game to date, and I thought it was unique and interesting to NOT have a final boss fight. As a matter of fact, I didn't even notice that there wasn't one, until the whole "Marauder Shields" crap showed up.
I was too busy being blown away by the ending, (and I mean that in a good way) to pay attention to the fact that there wasn't some arbitrary boss battle being thrown at me.
Different is good.
You know I was gonna say something similar to the guy before you but using Saren as the comparison. I will admit it was different not having a final boss. I will say this, atleast it wasn't like Final Fantasy 9 and was building to a final boss fight with Kuja only to have you fight something that was referenced in a side quest...

Totally agree. Although I very much want a confrontation with Harbinger, I'm not really interested in trying to shoot at him with my black widow.

Still, that would be like a cutscene, not really a fight between you and Harbinger.
As for the idea of boarding Harbinger..I dunno that strechs my disbelief. You were able to board and fight in a Reaper was was "deadish". It would be very different to actaully board a fully functional one.

I totally agree, just because its a computer game doesnt mean it needs a boss. We need only look at Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The boss fights where slightly shoe horned in, the dev's even apologised for it!

Not really have the normandy and other ships distract HR and then have a tiny party climb there way into HR'ss insides along the way you would have the minions trying to stop you from deactivating HRAvissel wrote...

But Allan, in FONV you did fight a boss at the end, more or less... at least in most endings.
And I loved that I didn't actually have to fight him
Depending on how you built your character, there are ways to completely skip the boss fight. I was able to use my Speech skill IIRC.
