How do you hijack a mech?

I can't even get the window to break until the mech is near death and I think the final shot to the driver is finishing the mech off. I just need to hijack a mech for the achievement and I can't seem to make it happen no matter how I approach it.

Shoot the glass with a sniper rifle (mantis works well, widow can do a bit to much damage at the end) The glass breaks when the mech's armor is about 50%
Here's a video showing exactly how to do it.

Biggest problem is that, once the glass is broken, if you miss the pilot and hit the mech inside, it blows up the mech.

Shoot the cockpit until you break the glass and kill the pilot.
He'll fall out and it'll be open for you to jump into.

One of my later games I managed to break the glass in the first mech at Grissom with my Black Widow. Unfortunately I shot through the pilot with the next round and blew it up anyway.
Outside of getting the achievement it is rarely worth bothering with hijacking the mech. In nearly all the fights with an Atlas, you will probably have significantly reduced the number of enemy troops by the time you hijack the mech anyway, not to mention that avoiding power use slows the destruction of the mech. The only times I take a mech now are the final sequence in Grissom where a mech is just sitting there, and likewise the last bit of Cerberus HQ in the hanger where there are unpiloted mechs sitting in the bay (the bay doors open revealing these after you launch the fighter).

First, tell your squad to focus on other targets so they don't were it down. Then focus fire on the glass.
I quite agree with this as this is exactly the way I did it, I used the mantis which I find to be the best (it may not be for some people) but it did work. Good luck

And of course there are so many different stories out there, like you only being able to 'hijack' Atlas's after the Citadel Coup but others saying you can do it on Grissom and I haven't heard official word from BioWare yet. This was the last achievement I needed to get.
I ended up going to the assault on Cerberus/TIM Base and had it on 'Casual' until a Mech showed up. Then I tried to get my guys to kill all the infantry (EDI and Liara had their powers reset because I was sick of them blowing up the Mechs) and once I eliminated all the Infantry I turned the difficulty up to Insanity and made it so Liara and EDI died. Then I used my Mantis V (no Armor Piercing Mod or Ammo Powers) and sniped the glass out after a bunch of shots... BUT the Mech it turned out had glitched onto a ledge that you could use as cover so I had to redo the entire thing again.
Now I have 100% Achievements on ME2 and ME3 (I don't think I'll ever get 100% on ME1. It's too much to go through and beat the game (going through 75% of ALL missions) with the same squadmate to get all the achievements.
The worst part of getting the Achievements in ME3 is the frustrating Insanity mode and all the Cut scenes you can't skip though.

1. Send your squad members off to their doom so they don't hinder you.
2. I prefer the N7 Valiant here but just keep taking shots on the glass and play ring around the rosie with it until breaks.
3. Kill the pilot and get in.
Only sucks that their is nothing left to kill in that area so it's wasted. Most areas they appear they're the last thing you fight before going into a area where you can't take it with you. Wish Bioware had given us some more enemies after Atlas fights.

This is driving me bat**** insane. Has anyone tried this in MP? I've tried this on Noveria and on the Citadel with the Mantis. I've tried killing my squad mates off, having them do whatever they want, and having them only whittle down the shields. At first I would kill the damn thing right after breaking the glass. Now I can't get the glass to break.
Pretty sure I heard you can't do it in MP.
