Let me start by saying that for the past couple of years I've been working on a project for the 'World Trade Center tribute center' in New York City, which has brought me into contact with a lot of photographs.

I was browsing EA's Origin website the other day when I came across a promotional banner for the 'Mass Effect 3' demo, and I was struck by how the art in the banner seemed to include part of the collapsed World Trade Center. I realise to most people a collapsed building is a collapsed building, but I can assure you the WTC was rather unique in it's structure and construction, and so what was left afterwards was very specific to this building, that no other building around would look like. Nonetheless, it still appears to have been used.

I am in no way suggesting this was intentional, the most likely explanation that comes to mind is perhaps an artist was researching photographs of collapsed buildings as a reference point, came across a photo taken from ground zero and either did not fully realise what the photograph was of, or wrongly assumed it was rather generic and could be applied to other collapsed structures.

The banner art in question along with the specific area I believe to have used are shown in the following image: http://i.imgur.com/H8i8I.jpg

Some basic material to show how such a structure was unique to this building:
http://science.howst...ion-unique2.htm
http://www.greatbuil...WTC_const.2.jpg
http://www.fema.gov/...fema403_ch2.pdf  (page 6 mainly)

Banner currently being used here: http://store.origin....ree-games-en_GB

Anyway, I thought I should post this partly to get peoples views, and partly to bring it to the attention of the developers in case this wasn't intentional, as I'm sure they wouldn't wish to be unintentionally depicting this.

Thanks!

[EDIT: As many of you seem to think it is photoshopped, here is the source image hosted on EA's domain: vassets.ea.com/Assets/Richmedia/Image/MassEffect3_demo_en_US_963x315_2.jpg ]

Tl;dr: 9/11 imagery used in promotional art for Mass Effect 3 (http://i.imgur.com/H8i8I.jpg), intentional or not?

WOW, that's absolutely awful if true. I don't care about the use of stock photos because that's what they are for but this is pretty despicable that's an image of the collapsed towers. It isn't to be re-purposed for recreational use..

Tali's face was one thing, but I'm not sure what to make of this.

Yeah that's not a coincidence, like the OP said structure is pretty unique and the outline is an exact replica of the WTC picture . I'm sure it wasn't intentional and doesn't have some secret meaning behind it but still not right.

Don't worry guys! It's all part of the artistic integrity!

Seriously, thats pretty dispicible... Even if that structure could be easy to mistake for any ruining building, the design and the image it's taken from would  give it away. Some things you should leave well enough alone... especially when it involves the deaths of 1000's of people. :(

Stay classy...

So WHAT ? As sad as event as that was, that is just a building, who made it sacred ? You realise the debris were discarded right ? like GARBAGE ? Had them had a similar construct in game colapse after a reaper attack that would be insensible, a still partial picture of a colapsed building ?

and not a peep from people when the 9/11 images were used on t-shirts,mugs and conspiracy theory sites world wide.

a game has a tiny piece of structure in a banner ad and wham!...used to create yet more BSN tension.
which is much more offensive to me.

Heh. "oops", mayyybe not the best choice of source material to use.

Believe me, stock photos are used as source material for this sort've art all the time, I wouldn't read much into it. It's just an unfortunate unwittingly associating a 9/11 scene with the reaper invasion

I don't see this banner you're talking about. The original image of Shepard's silhouette is here:

I'm thinking someone just photoshopped it to create controversy... or I'm just not looking in the right place on Origins.

This is Origin's banner:

So what? They shouldn't get inspiration from ground zero while creating an end-of-the-world poster?

It's definitely the same building as far as I can tell. If intentional or not, does it matter?

I'm sorry but... does it really matter?

9/11 happened ten years ago, It's over with. The Japenese had a horrible Earthquake that killed far more than 9/11 but do they go crying whenever earthquake/tsunami imagery is used in media?

Yes, I get that 9/11 was a terrible event but can you Americans please stop going mad over any showing of towers being destroyed in media? I get tired of this same sort of thing cropping up again and again whenever something depicts an aeroplane crashing or towers collapsing. It's just getting boring now.

Here in the UK we had horrible bombing of the underground system in London, which you probably never even heard of, but you don't see people here going up in arms whenever any media depicts a train exploding.

I provided a link to the specific page in the original post (http://store.origin....ree-games-en_GB ) and can assure you I didn't edit the image.

Since I assumed it isn't intentional, I did send an email to EA to let them know so they could remove it if they wished (to avoid any kind of controversy in the future), their reply:
"
Thank you for writing to Electronic Arts.

I would also suggest you to post these issues on official game forums because official game forums are mostly made by game developers so that can work as your direct contact to them. "
Though I never suggested I found it offensive, you can see from their reply this isn't something I have simply fabricated.
