Do you agree with this idea put forth at PAX?

I personally DO NOT. I mean, this was my reaction at that comment:

Image IPB

"DONTTOUCHTHEWARDEN."

I really love the idea of the Warden having a little appearance in DA3, but giving them a voice (that could be chosen, no less) sounds like a very bad idea. I mean, I personally dislike voiced PC's in these sorts of games, anyway, and The Warden is a silent protagonist and I believe it should stay that way, personally. It will force a personality I may not want onto a PC I was given full reign on, and I am very much against that.

Sure, having something like... iunno, seeing them for a brief moment with an old companion/LI/character/whatever before they go off is the ideal for me. No personality put onto them through gestures or voice. Not for me.

What do you think? Thoughts here please! I'd really love to see what other think about this point put forth by the DA team.

I mean, dare I even ask that the Warden is given a short player-controlled moment? Still silent? Dare I ask that of you, BioWarians?

I'd be willing to give it a chance but it really depends on a lot of things.
  • Why does the Warden need a voice for DA3?
  • What is the nature of the Warden's involvement in DA3?
  • Is the player going to be able to control the Warden in DA3 (even if temporarily)?
  • Does a voice just mean BioWare will be hijacking the character of the Warden as an NPC, giving them all sorts of out of character motivations?
  • What about importing the face into any new facemorph system? Will that be customizable too, since its doubtful it would look the same?
Honestly, if its not going to be done really, really, really, really well just don't do it. Its not worth it for a 5 second cameo to have some deformed version of our Warden's start wise cracking out of character in some new voice with BioWare hijacking an old PC.

So mostly it comes down to why they need to add a voice in the first place? I'm guessing that means they'd be making them some kind of cameo or NPC for the new PC to interact with? If thats the case, stop. Just. stop. I don't want BioWare taking over and all of a sudden giving my Warden all sorts of varied motivations and hijacking their personality just for the sake of a cameo, or even worse, making them some super plot important person with the player not controlling them. I'd rather never see them again than have BioWare bring them back to have him do something stupid and out of character.

So pretty much even if they had multiple voice options, unless we're going to be controlling the Warden and what they're saying, the whole thing is a non starter.

Now if we had some control over the Warden as a PC, even if temporarily, then I might begrudgingly accept a voice, but mostly only if they gave some meaningful customization options with it. I don't know how they'd do it, but my Amell Warden sounds different than my Cousland who sounds different than my Aeducan. So if they can account for that and give a voice that sounds like a cross between Jeremy Irons and Ray Fiennes for my Cousland then great. Otherwise, leave the Warden alone.

That would be ideal. If the Warden is necessary for the story, just let the player control them for that segment of the game. It would be a very unique and dare I say innovative way to handle old PCs in subsequent sequels, allowing the players to have a greater sense of agency with the overall story and version of the DA universe they're making,

I'd rather the Warden stay gone, banished forever to silent protagonist purgatory.

I don't feel much ownership of the Warden. The one thing I really wanted my characters to do (tell everyone the Grey Wardens' secrets and just generally loudly complain about how coercive and exploitative they were) wasn't allowed, for obvious reasons, so w/e. They can give my Warden a voice, but I hope they don't have a big role in the next game (and I can't imagine they would).

The Warden had a voice. It was called a soundset. Nothing more is necessary. If desired, detect for that and assign the VA accordingly.

I personally want the Warden back. If this is how it starts, and paves the way for them to return as the PC of a future game, then so be it. I like the Warden fine "silent" (though as others have mentioned, she/he is anything but in combat, picking locks and so on...), but again, if this is what it takes, let it be so.

I just thought they meant that they want players to choose a soundset again.

I will always associate my Warden with Kath Soucie's voice.  Hopefully, if this is implemented in some way, they can get the VAs who did the original soundsets to be options.

Fixed. Because silent protagonists are heavenly. :innocent:

If it's voiced by the voice you choose when you make your Warden, then why not?

Highly *highly* doubt they'll feature the Warden in depth or give him/her a voice. They did that with TOR and the character of Revan and, well, let's just say *that* didn't go over so well. It's honestly far easier for them to show the character in something like a cinematic (perhaps with Morrigan narrating?) wearing some kind of full outfit so you can't see the Warden's face but you can still tell whether they're male or female.

Whatever happens in the Cinematic because Morrigan is narrating there's no reason for the Warden to talk. To me that would be the safest bet. Unlike Glitter, I absolutely love that the PC's in Dragon Age talk now; it provides a fantastic flow to dialogue and interaction (when done well, anyway. DA2 dropped that ball a bit) however even I will attest that having the Warden speak? Really bad idea under any circumstances. It would just be too jarring and really feel like the character was taken out of the hands of those who built him/her up in Origins.

I think it would be great to hear my Warden come to life with a voice. With how great the voice acting was in DAO and DA2, I trust BioWare will do a great job with the Warden.

If my warden's actions and dialogue choices are being controlled by me I'd be fine with it. Especially if we get to choose the voice from few options. Hell, I miss my warden and would love to see her again. The Warden being the protagonist in DA3 would be ideal but I doubt that will happen. Too many complications.

However, if she's just an unnecessary cameo puppet controlled by Bioware. Not in my Dragon Age. Never.

What voice? Male or female voice? British accent or French accent or Welsh accent or American? Because I have both male and female Cousland. I have Female Elven Aeducan ( adopted daughter of King Aeducan ). I have female Amell and female Mahariel as well.

A short player-controlled moment? Sure, resurrect my Amber Cousland first or recall my Maveric Cousland together with Morrigan and OGB from Eluvian Portal. Recall Amell, Mahariel and Aeducan from Deep Road as they are now near their calling. Can BioWare do that? If can't then DO.NOT.TOUCH.MY.WARDEN. BioWare has no idea who my wardens are.

Why not? I mean, they already butchered every other personal aspect of the Warden, like who I had him slaughter, who I had him love, and how his life came to an end. Go ahead and just bang that last nail down into the coffin.

Noooo. Let's keep the Warden in the glorious, beautiful past. If the Warden ever pops up again, hopefully it is just in some non-verbal cinematic at best. Or just rumors and lore and other NPCs talking about her in-game (without ever actually seeing the character).

Realistically, though, with the Warden able to be a Dwarf, Elf, or Human, it might be draining on resources for trying to find voices per race and gender? Unless it's just a default lady/dude voice for all. But no thanks to any of that. Nonono.

Yes, give the warden a voice if she/she is there. It would be really weird otherwise. I can imagine the conversation. Varric: "Oh, don't mind the Commander of the Grey over there. He's a man of few words."

Sure, why not? But I hope we get to re-do their faces because I have a feeling my elven Warden is going to look weeeird when translated to the DA2 elf face.

It would be more weird if the warden suddenly voice different accent. I know my Awakening Warden use French accent because he's from Orlais. Does BioWare knows that? or Does BioWare assume My Warden used Bristish accent like the rest of Fereldens? What about my warden face?

BioWare can't import face morph. BioWare can't import save flags properly. BioWare can't even design a DA 2 character that emotes  according to how I perceived my character. Let alone trying to show my fully created character from head to toe? They can't do anything right when it comes to MY character. What the heck is on their mind. Why don't they just mess up with Hawke since it's  them who charaterize Hawke?

And they also canonized Revan into a cheap MMO boss fight. Masters of storytelling there.
